Have never taken a class, was self taught from books. there is no where around here to take them. I have learned so much in the last 10 months from this board. No question is considered to stupid, and there is always somone willing to help.

Lisa_wanna_b_quilter 02-06-2010 04:35 PM

I've never taken a quilting class either, but I still might. What little I know comes from the internet and this board. I still have a long way to go!

nannya54 02-06-2010 04:35 PM

Self taught here. I always say I'm in the Simplicity How To Sew stage of learning. Not many classes in my hometown and way too cheap to travel to one. I have two wonderful quilters in the family who help me when I SOS them but they're 700 miles away. Basically I'm sink or swim.....

Self Taught with help from Simply Quilts. Never took a class, too busy when I worked and could afford it, now retired, and can't afford it. Besides, it would take away from my stash cash!

jewelps 02-06-2010 04:52 PM

i am self taught, never took a class

Self taught, jumped in the middle and started to work my way out. This board is the greatest for help.

judy_68 02-06-2010 04:54 PM

I took one class but it was horrible. she taught me VERY LITTLE. She acted like we should already know everything. I decided then that I would teach myself and do things MY WAY. I would probably never take another class. She didn't even show us how to put binding on a quilt. It was horrible.
So, now I teach myself something new every time I sew.

Learned to sew as a teenager and tried my hand at quilting just 3 years ago....thank goodness for the internet!
I am so hooked and learn something new all the time.

mamahippychicky 02-06-2010 04:58 PM

I was talked into taking a class with a friend about 15 years ago and hated it. Put me off quilting for about 7 years. Never again! If I can't figure it out, I'll find a book or look on the internet. Much easier way to learn, as you then learn what you want to, and at your own pace.

Mari 02-06-2010 05:10 PM

self taught. I learn by doing---the same mistake over and over again!

Oklahoma Suzie 02-06-2010 05:14 PM

Self taught, and have learned so much on here.

dkabasketlady 02-06-2010 05:25 PM

Self taught, but I've sewn all my life. My mother and grandmother were quilters so I guess it's in the blood. My two sisters are also quilters!

sewnsewer2 02-06-2010 05:30 PM

I learned from the quilting for idiots book!

Chasing Hawk 02-06-2010 05:39 PM

Never took a class, I learned hands on, trial by error and lots of ripping seams in frustration.
Although I am a Seamstress by trade doing Upholstery and sewing my kids clothes.

barb_quilts 02-06-2010 05:42 PM

I'm self taught, well, friend taught. Had been quilting for 8 years before taking my first class, which was a free motion class.

I have also learned a great deal from reading on this wonderful forum! I feel badly for not joining much sooner but I do Thank all of you, for any & all valuable knoweldge you have shared on here. Other than here & Simply Quilts & books, I am self taught.

JanetM 02-06-2010 06:10 PM

I am self taught. Other than Home Ec in high school I have relied on books to get me through.

I didn't even have the benefit of classes when I bought my embroidery/sewing machine or serger. I know my way around my embroidery machine but need to spend more time learning my serger.

I did just recently take a purse making class. All of us made a purse in one day! I hope to take more classes but they do add up, and I like to spend my money on fabric and supplies.

Jim's Gem 02-06-2010 06:11 PM

Havn't had a class, but have friends that have been wonderful in instructing me along the way.

tuesy 02-06-2010 06:15 PM

Same as Janet here. Only had Home Ec in school. Have sewn pretty much all my life except when life got in the way.

I've learned alot from friends, reading online and here..

I've still got alot to learn about quilting, but I'm working on it..

Pam G 02-06-2010 06:17 PM

Self taught, my first quilt was for my daughter when I was pregnant (1982). Choose Bambi for her room and they had nothing then - long before Disney Stores. Found a coloring book and did a liquid embroidery with green sashing - not very good but she loved it and we still have it.

My mom was a quilter but she started after I left home, she was self-taught also but later she got to sew with my grandma. When my mom went to the nursing home my sister and I split her stuff up easily, she took applique type stuff and I took the traditional piecing.

I too started after watching Simply Quilts. I have taken a few "classes" and usually end up modifying the directions (rule breaker I am). The last retreat I went to the instructor got mad because I was showing other students "another" way to do the border.

I also tend to piece more than quilt, more tops than finished quilts, too many UFO's and WIP's.

I went on to complete the entire quilt which was my first. Since then I have taken classes/workshops on specific techniques like paper piecing and machine quilting and one to make a type of pine tree block. I also took a long arm class. No class ever cost me more then $30 or $40. I'd say the paper peicing class was the best money spent. Don't think I would have quite figured that one out without some hands on instruction.

Have your ever looked at Carol Doak's PP books? I taught myself with her books. Her instructions are very good, and she has great patterns.

maryb119 02-06-2010 06:24 PM

I am self taught. My first quilt was made in 1976. I made so many mistakes. I made the pattern myself and used 5/8 inch seams and polyester fabrics but it didn't look too bad when it was done. Then, my grandma gave me a subscription to Quilter's Newsleter Magazine for my birthday. I read it cover to cover and I still subscribe to that magazine after all these years. there is always something new to learn and try.

bluebird 02-06-2010 06:57 PM

Self taught, by my seam ripper :-D

Jingle 02-06-2010 07:32 PM

I have never had a class, learned trial and error, mostly error and got lots of books and I am still learning. I am always looking for ways to make everything more accurate and perfect and faster. I will never get there but, I keep trying. I learned to sew in Home Ec. and as a stay at home Mom I sewd clothes for 2 daughter and myself, pjs for son. I started quilting before oldest daughter was born, I hqvq made quilts for 6 grands and great granddaughter, some have several and other quilts for all of them.

lindak21 02-06-2010 07:38 PM

Pickles 02-06-2010 07:45 PM

Self taught ,I taught myself to sew mens western shirts in the
70's and in 89 I started to sew quilts, I'm a eye's on person if I can see it I can make it .I do learn allot of different things
here on the board, of witch I'm so thankful for. :D

Miss Kitty 02-06-2010 08:02 PM

Mostly self- taught. I started sewing in the 4th grade.(4-H).
My mother was one of the leaders. Both of my grandmothers sewed and quilted. Mostly I have sewed clothes and things for
the house. I'm a hands on person. I have always love to sew.
Mistakes, I have made every one of them as least once, if not several times. I will probably make a lot more mistakes. I always have to try something a different way.

weezie 02-06-2010 08:03 PM

Learned from books and t.v. shows. When I first became interested in making quilts and for several years thereafter, there were a lot of good quilt shows on t.v. and I'm grateful for that. It's a shame the shows have gotten scarce or disappeared altogether.

Justok 02-06-2010 08:37 PM

self taught, but I joined a class a couple of weeks ago and I didn't learn anything new,but I did meet some nice gals and the verbal exchange is a lesson in its self. I am in the middle of another class on color. I was confused at first and thought about not going back, but once I got home and worked on the project I found that is what's missing in my quilting, The new scary stuff you can learn. It has made quilting new and interesting.

Loretta 02-06-2010 09:08 PM

Never took a class except at my guild and they are only about 10 minutes.

WalMartGranny 02-06-2010 09:22 PM

Self taught. So if I make a mistake, I blame it on my teacher.

Katrine 02-06-2010 10:12 PM

Completely self-taught with books, and internet. I only started 5 years ago, wish I had done it lots earlier.

tigger5464 02-06-2010 10:52 PM

Mom taught me the basics of sewing when I was probably about 10 yrs. In school I elected NOT to take the "home ec" class because it was mostly cooking and I already knew how to do that since 9 yrs of age and cooking for 6 daily. I taught myself to sew by making the boys' halloween costumes and then on to quillows. From there....no stopping until work and life got in the way. But back to quilting now. :D Self taught as far as the quilting goes...the basics of the machine I can thank my wonderful Mom :D

amma 02-06-2010 11:31 PM

Self taught... I watched Alex Anderson, Eleanor Burns, Kaye Woods, Fons and Porter, Georgia Bonesteel and every internet video I can find and all of the quilting books at the library :D:D:D THEN I found this board :D:D:D
I am planning on taking a few classes at the LQS, but they are not actual quilt classes...painting with inks, etc to play with the quilt blocks I would love to make

jbud2 02-07-2010 12:22 AM

Self taught. Seemed I always sewed, from when I was I big enough to make the treadle go! My grandmother could do some real fancy stitching with a needle and she was always giving me fabric to 'play' with. From doll clothes to my clothes, to my kid's clothes and now to quilting! Books and the internet have held my hand along the way.

Crafty1 02-07-2010 04:47 AM

Self taught. I ventured to the library, internet and this board!
