Sewing machines do you have that you regularly use? Since I am starting this major sewing room clean out (from my other post), it got me thinking, how many sewing machine should I keep. I hope to have a more dedicated sewing room in our next house but who knows how long that it could take to sell our place or where we are going to end up.

I currently have 3 and have access to 2 more if I have to take mine in for service. I am seriously contemplating getting rid of at least 1 of them, maybe both the extras. I never use either of them and they just sit and collect dust. Neither of them are anything special, just basic machines and then I have my piecing machine that I do use regularly...it isn't going anywhere.

So I ask, how many machines do you have that you regularly use and how many do you have that are dust catchers?

SherriB 09-08-2010 01:53 AM

I have one machine that I use for pretty much everything. It is my Janome. I have a Brother from Walmart that I rarely use. And then there are my vintage machines. I have 8 of them. Two are treadles, two are in cabinets (one is my Rocketeer) and 4 are in carrying cases.

SueDor 09-08-2010 01:59 AM

I only have one and that is an Elna.

watterstide 09-08-2010 02:09 AM

i have 2, i use 2.
i don't have room for more..to much fabric and notions!

Loris 09-08-2010 02:19 AM

I have one but would love an embroidering machine - may have to save up for that

leatheflea 09-08-2010 02:33 AM

I have 3. One is an embroidery, rarely used. An Old singer from the high school that I attended, learned to sew on it many years ago. And one of my grandmothers sewing machines, i never use it. Now I'm looking for a serger and a mid to longarm. A gal can never have to many machines or fabric.

Yarn or Fabric 09-08-2010 03:20 AM

I have 4? I just sold one so I used to have more..

I have my sewing machine, a Janome 4900qc
an embroidery machine with a sewing features I'll only use if my machine goes in to service - a Brother 4500d
a serger that was given to me and has timing issues. I'll look at it someday. For now it is under the table taking up space.
I also have a Bailey 15" on a frame with a pcq that I have not used at all. If I don't make friends with it, I am going to sell it and clear out the space and just get a sit down machine and a big table lol. I am hoping to make friends with it though and more sooner than later.

I just recently sold my old faithful, a JC Penny machine that I bought in 1990. It was a fabulous old machine, that I bought new when I was in the service - it was really heavy, all metal and made by Singer when Singer was still good. It was hard to part with it but I really just never used it anymore and after getting the Brother 4500d, I felt that saving it as a back up machine was kind of silly.

Lacelady 09-08-2010 04:04 AM

I have 3/4 and another on the way. A Bernina 730E, so it does embroidery too, my older Bernina 1260 that I tend to piece on, a Featherwieight, new to me this summer, and intended more for taking to workshops, plus an overlocker.

The one on the way is an HQ16 Sit Down. I don't have room for a long arm as such - well, not the frame etc., but this new one will give me all the space to shove my quilts under it, and it's set in a table that measures 36in x 30in.

I am already used to FMQ, so that holds no terrors, and the other advantage will be the bigger bobbin - it holds 2 1/2 times more than a regular one. I can't wait for it to arrive.

pocoellie 09-08-2010 04:29 AM

Mostly I use my big elna, but have another elna, that I use for backup and a Morse that I occasionally use, I have 3 more in my sewing room and 3 older ones in cabinets in my little store room, but I'm not getting rid of any of them. LOL

sueisallaboutquilts 09-08-2010 04:37 AM

Gee, we're not addicts or anything, right?? Fabric, machines, the list is endless!!
I have my Bernina QE, my Featherweight that I love piecing on and can keep it downstairs wherever I want to be, my first machine is a Kenmore 1040 that I don't use anymore but I love it, a Singer 301, for now that's all but I want all the old Singers I see!! lol

Deecee 09-08-2010 04:53 AM

I have a one and only.

clem55 09-08-2010 06:07 AM

A serger, a Janome MC8000(20 years old) and my featherweight that never gets used.It was my first machine . Hoping to replace the MC as the LCD light has gone bad, can hardly read anything on it, $300 to repair. Just not sure if I want to spend $5ooo for a new one, and I"d love the new MC11000 !!

deema 09-08-2010 06:14 AM

I have just the one. It's my first machine, and very basic...got it for christmas a few years ago. I'm eyeing up a new machine, maybe for christmas this year! :)

oldhag 09-08-2010 06:27 AM

My Singer CE-250 is set up for embroidery only (never tried sewing on it). My Singer 9940 is set up with black thread right now for a WIP, My White Speedylock 639 for serging. My 301 is set up with beige thread for a WIP, my handcrank 128 is set up for scrappy piecing. The other machines are in various nooks and crannies around the house awaiting a project. I like having each machine set up for a different project so that when I tire of one project I can just switch to the other one quickly.

debbieumphress 09-08-2010 06:31 AM

I have 5 in my sewing room, three are vintage and on a shelf. And I have 5 in my trunk for Project Linus to use once a month that are all Janome's and a Husqavarana. I like my personal ones set up, one with a walking foot, 1/4 foot, and regular. I love machines. DOn't sell it, just as soon as you do, one will go done and you will need it.LOL

BellaBoo 09-08-2010 06:43 AM

I keep a Janome Gem Gold in the car trunk for taking to guild meetings. I have a Singer 301 I use for most all my piecing. I have a Singer Quantum I use for zig zag/decorative stitches/overcasting. I have a Brother 1500 for machine quilting. I have a Singer Featherweight because it's so cute and I have a Singer 15-90 in cabinet I use for paper piecing. I have a Janome treadle I never use. DD bought a Janome Gem and used it once and left it in my sewing room. I sew on it every now and then to keep it lubricated. The only one I bought was the Gem and the Quantum, the rest were given to me.

Quiltforme 09-08-2010 09:00 AM

I have one juki 3 brothers and use them all

retired2pa 09-08-2010 09:36 AM

I have a Brother ULT2003D (bought new) that I use mostly for embroidery (thinking of selling, though since I don't use it much); A Brother for taking to classes (don't use it much either..it's in a case in my closet); a Singer 328K Rocketeer (don't use it much...just like the looks of it);a vintage Mercury that I have displayed in my guest room; and a Brother PQ1500s that I use for piecing and quilting (LOVE this machine!!).

As soon as you get rid of one of your machines you'll wish you never would have...believe me!

feline fanatic 09-08-2010 09:39 AM

I have 4. My Bernina for all peicing and any other sewing I may do. It is an older QE and does not have embroidery capability other then the pre-programmed block letters.
My old JC Penney machine which was my first machine I got in high school. It is sitting in a closet gathering dust but I keep it for a backup. My treadle that I just got last year and still haven't gotten her in working order and finally my Innova longarm that I just got in July. I am in the process of finishing up an old UFO to slap on the Innova which will be my first real quilt to put on it. Up until now I have been working on practice sandwich but I am ready to do a real quilt.

Jeanniejo 09-08-2010 09:45 AM

I have a treadle machine, 3 set up in my sewing room, one for piecing, one for quilting and one for embroidery. Also a Janome I use for classes and traveling, and one old one that does things that are heavy duty, patches, leather etc. I guess that makes 6 and yes, I use them all !!!

dreamboat 09-08-2010 09:48 AM

I have 10. 2 viking sewing and embroidery, 2 singer antiques. 1 singer 503, 1 Euro Pro, 1 brother, 1 felting
Expression, 1 905 viking serger, and my jr miss I got for christmas when I was 10 yrs. old. I do not plan on getting rid of any of them at the present time.

mosquitosewgirl 09-08-2010 09:50 AM

I have one that I regularly use, my Janome MC4900, which I simply adore - one of the reasons the others don't get used as much. Then there are the dust catchers....the White that a friend gave me for my daughter, the Riccar that isn't working right now and always was a PITA, then there is my husband's New Home. Oh, and my lovely serger.

redvette54 09-08-2010 09:57 AM

I have only one, but have been looking on CL for a backup.

leaha 09-08-2010 11:07 AM

I have 3 Pfaff sewing/embroidery machines I use every day, A Pfaff serger coverlock machine I use when I need to serge. A Singer 503A I got just a few weeks ago, I have not really gotten to know her yet. and 3 antique Wilcox & Gibbs that sit around my sewing room/studio. I traded my Pfaff 1229 to my sister (for a laptop computer) this past April and I sure do miss her. Think I will look for another one, was such a work horse. Am also looking for a FW.

wanderingcreek 09-08-2010 03:06 PM

I have one machine that I use for everything I do and that is a Janome MC6500. I have a basic Janome as well that I have never even used.

ChubbyBunny 09-08-2010 03:13 PM

I have 2 sewing machines and an embroidery machine. I use my Janome for piecing & applique and my Juki for quilting. The Juki is on my HandiQuilter frame. I LOVE my Juki and would like to get another for piecing. I also have an antique sewing machine, but it doesn't work well so it just sits and collects dust.

StitchinJoy 09-08-2010 03:17 PM

I sew on a Pfaff Quiltstyle and I quilt on an A-1 Elite 23" longarm on an 11 foot table.

We live in a 7 room house and 2 of the rooms are pretty much devoted to sewing, quilting and fabric stash. I would like a Featherweight to carry to quilt classes, retreats and quilt camp, but really, I don't need any more machines.

I'm green with envy!

Shemjo 09-08-2010 03:28 PM

I have a Janome MC9000 that I sew on at home and a FW for workshops and classes. I also have a treadle and a chain stitcher that I never use. 3 more machines in a closet that haven't seen daylight for several years. But I am not counting!

BRenea 09-08-2010 06:37 PM

I have three: my Bernina 730E which I sew and embroider with, a Viking 500 that is currently at my MIL's house so we can sew together and a Viking MegaQuilter on my MQ frame. I would like to get into collecting some vintage machines too!

allie 09-08-2010 07:21 PM

i have eleven machines i sew on at differents depending what iam sewing

Feather3 09-08-2010 08:40 PM

I have 5 machines total. 3 Sewing machines, a Serger machine & a Coverstitch Machine. I use my Bernina 200E for most sewing & embroidery. My Bernina 903 (which is 27 years old), I use for certain things, like making jeans. I use my Bernina Serger allot. The Babylock CS I just got & It's still in the box. I also have a Sailrite Industrial machine I got several months ago. I use that one for leather work. My Huz keeps telling me I should get a longarm, but I don't have room for one right now.

brenda21 09-08-2010 09:05 PM

I have one that I sew on and I have *Pearl*, my singer from the 20's that doesn't get used.

wolph33 09-09-2010 04:35 AM

Mariposa 09-09-2010 07:56 AM

I have 2 sewing machines: a Pfaff, and a ('85) Singer. I use the Pfaff mostly, but other still works great! I have a lower-end serger (not used much), and HQ longarm. :)

pchp 09-09-2010 07:18 PM

I have 4:
a Bernina I use all the time;

a 50s/60s vintage Kenmore in a table I bought for $25 about 20 years ago and would not part with, even if I don't use it so much any more;

a cheap little portable I used one summer on a trip, but which needs repair/oiling/cleaning before I can use it again;

and a very old treadle machine which will need MAJOR refinishing to even just display, but which was abandoned in the garage of my parents' house before they bought it 50 years ago. I decided to keep it when my mom sold her house - several years before I even gave much thought to starting quilting.

barbsmith 09-10-2010 03:26 AM

I have a Singer 401A which I purchased in 1961, the year I graduated from high school. It still works very well. Recently my sister gave me my mother's old Montgomery Ward sewing machine. It is the one I learned to sew on. I also have a treadle machine that my DH bought for me at an auction.

steelecg 09-10-2010 04:31 AM

Just two - a Pfaff and a Janome

mar32428 09-10-2010 04:36 AM

I have my Bernina 1260 for my workhorse and my 1130 as a backup. Also a Bernina serger, Bernina Deco500 embroidery, a Brother, A Janome 6600 for quilting and a Gem for classes. I also have my GM's Centennial featherwaight which I haven't used yet.
I don't think that's too many since each has it's purpose and since I'm retired and live alone, I can sew every day to my heart's content.

I have a 45 year old top of the line Japanese Universal that I have been using every day to make American Girl Doll clothes for my grandaughter. I just purchased the Brother CS6000i from Amazon for $147.54 that has quilting attachments with the machine that I will begin using for quilting. Then I have a very old Singer Red Eye Treadle machine that came from my DH's mother. We are going to restore it and I am anxious to see if I can run a treadle machine.
