I have one at the moment - the Poinsettia wall hanging that I started to learn how to FMQ.
I just finished two quilts and shipped them off to the LA quilter this morning. Ready to clean my sewing room, clean my machine, and start on the next quilt. I do have a lot of fabric in my stash that I bought with a particular quilt in mind and either never started or decided that I didn't want to do. If you count that fabric as UFOs then there are too many to count. I figure that if I never started to cut and sew, it's stash, not a UFO. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. |
I think that I have only 4 UFO's left to finish, but tons of PIGS (projects in grocery sacks).
Well, I'd really rather not count them, or I would get depressed. Let's just say that I started working on some UFO's this week that were started at least 3 years ago and there are no doubt more that are older than that. I'm being so efficient on clear this matter that I started some table runners for a friend, cut the strips out, made the HST's and forgot which block I was making. lol I just turned 65, maybe I'm genetically pre-disposed to blow up then, as my brain is running in another dimension. I'll let everybody know when I do finish some UFO's. Happy Quilting, and who's counting anyway, it's like trying to find those missing socks that disappear in the laundry, where they go, nobody knows.
I've finished at least 2 projects that were 15-20 years in the making...so it IS possible! :D
our guild has a ufo challenge every year but I still have at least 5 projects waiting to be finished and new ones with deadlines of December 1st
2 many 2 mention, let alone count! Seriously I don't want to go down that slippery guilty slope!
They seem to multiple - love it when I actually finish one.
I just moved and couldn't bring most of my stash but I brought 4 unfinished tops and 3 sets of blocks I couldn't bare to lose.

Beethoven, DaVinci, Mozart, Dickens, Gaudi, Gilbert Stuart(portrait of Geo. Washington), all left work unfinished and nobody denies their genius! Sometimes, even though your quilt isn't finished, you are finished with your quilt. Jan in VA |
too many to mention, so I better get busy. LOL
You all have inspired me. I was totally frustrated with the quilt I've been working on. I finally said the heck with it & pulled out a small quilt. The small quilt I pulled out was more finished than I'd thought & the quilting left to do isn't complicated & much less than I'd remembered. So, thank you to all.

Hmmm! I think I have 7or 8 at the moment. One will be off to the quilter tomorrow. Does material for unstarted projects count? If so I am in deep do do!
It doesn't matter if you finish or not, as long as you have fun.Why does it matter to those that made the comment?

People need to learn to keep their opinions to themselves - and we need to learn to tell them that their opinion is not appreciated. |
I don't want to know. I just want to get some finish for Christmas. When I am working on one quilt my mine is planning another. I would not know what to do if I had all of my UFO's done. The world would end. I quilt to forget about my Stress not gave me Stress!!! God Bless us Quilters.

Especially while you are learning and exploring different techniques, there are likely to be many projects that, once you've learned what you need to learn, you don't feel any particular need to finish. Consider giving away the ones that someone else might want to invest some time in and get rid of the rest. This may or may not apply to you but it does to some quilters and I hate to see people beat themselves up over UFO's that have actually done their job.
at least 10 and probably 15 or so. Most need bindings or backs or to be taken to quilter. Oh well, the quilt police will just have to come and get me. All I can say is they better have backs I like and free LAQ. LOL
LOL boy I'm with you I have so many things started and not finished. I tell them, "If I finish them I would have nothing to get up the next morning for. Beside as long as I have an unfinished project I have to stay alive to finish."
I have some too, think of them as WIPS, works in progress! I don't care for some of these quilt police attitudes either, & alot, I have noticed, come from ones who don't quilt, or do anything creative, so who are they to judge, & how on earth would they understand anyway, right! Just remember... people who mind don't matter, & people who matter don't mind! I keep telling myself this anyway, lol... Just enjoy your quilting & don't worry about what ones like this say!
Probably 7 or so. My daughter is also a quilter, so I am not worried about UFO's - I figure that it's just more of her "inheritance" - LOL! We joke about that. She loves it when I buy more material, patterns, etc. so I'm home free - ha!
shhh I'm not counting. :)
I really like the thought that sometimes you are finished with the quilt even though the quilt isn't finished. I have started some of those and I keep them because I think I will come back to them. Maybe I need to allow myself to give up on them.

Well, Nobody has mentioned Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). (snip) Kitty you have the best reply! I was thinking this too as I wrote as not finishing projects is very typical. The setting it aside to wait for fresh eyes works for nearly everything I do. Yes I also am ADD. |
commonthread,
It seems that my entire life is like my sewing! Everything is a UFO's stored away and unfinished, can't remember what I started, or how many. I walk into a room, can't remember what I walked in for! Make a list, forget to read it again! Open the fridge, what am I looking for? Turn on the iron to let it heat up, forget about it and leave the house! Run water in the dishpan, walk away because it is too hot. Forget about it and come back and it is cold! Have to start all over again. Sewing lets me feel some kind of accomplishment, whether I finish it or not! With sewing I can put things into a box, nice and neat, all the pieces together, the pattern, the flosses that match, the buttons or ribbons I bought to go with it. The fabric, some cut, some not. I can store it and come back to it. It is a visual cue, a reminder of what to do! I have 10 boxes all crammed with UFO's, sorted and put into freezer bags to keep everything separate, but together, so I don't lose track of it. I need more boxes! LOL My mind sees a picture on the Net and an idea springs up. I have to gather everything together because if I don't and the memory fades, I will never think of it again! My computer is full of folders with imagined quilts, embroidery, purses, vests, pillows, clothing. Folders and sub-folders! These are my WHIMMs, but hidden on my computer because I can't remember enough to keep them in my mind. All like my pizza boxes. It looks like I am being obsessive compulsive, but I am really not. I just can't remember, until I open a box. Sometimes I find myself pleasantly surprised! The automatic recall that everyone uses without thinking about it, does not work on me. I think I am destined to store UFO's for all eternity! LOL LOL :-D :-D :-D |
You are so funny kitty! Sometimes organizing into those neat boxes is the accomplishment that I celebrate. I do wish I could put that effort into the finishing, I feel like I'm more of an archivist or curator sometimes except that I also forget what I have done. Substitute "forgetful" for disorganized into my favorite quote from A.A. Milne “One of the advantages of being disorganized is that one is always having surprising discoveries.” And I keep forgetting to sign my posts,

Humm?? Does it count as a UFO if you have cut out the fabric, but haven't started sewing yet?

I failed the QB challenge miserably but I did manage to finish 7. Then the grandkids moved in....pop goes the weasil. I started 2 new projects that have to be done by the end of the month.
I have quite a few UFO. I have been working on them slowly. I decided not to start anything new until I have finished at least 5. Some of my UFO I inherited.

father is a retired mechanical engineer. He'd like to make some $, so he keeps designing this or that, and building one or two prototypes. What he does next, is not get them out there, but draw up all the cutting or building parts on CAD-CAM, and then draw up a list of numbered parts. It's part of the mfg process to him. No business has ever made it to selling. One actually made it to packaging, then he dumpt it. ... that one probably would have actually been lucrative.
Well, back to quilting. I'm very like that. I draw up the quilt. on paper. Plan it. calc the yardage myself... often I buy the fabric... sometimes I cut it... occasionally I make a few blocks.... then I get excited about something else, and start over at square one (pun intended). Some of us like the planning part. My home is the nest of many UFO/WIPs/PIGS. |
I just redid my sewing room and unearthed all of my UFOs - some I even forgot I had. Didn't count because that would make me feel bad and under-accomplished. When the mood strikes, I will pull them out and work on them. Until then, they are neatly stacked and resting in a quiet dark place with their friends. Not a problem at all.
Now I have finished quite a few quilts. If all of my work was UFO then I wouldn't be happy either. |
