Do you own your own quilting set-up or do you send out? How long is the turn around for a quilt sent out?
Thanks.

Ripped on Scotch 06-27-2011 12:02 PM

And you're great at it! I'm so jealous I don't have one!

blueangel 06-27-2011 12:06 PM

I have to send mine out.

PamB8s 06-27-2011 12:07 PM

I hand quilt all my tops

Michellesews 06-27-2011 12:07 PM

You can send them to me... :)

Hinterland 06-27-2011 12:09 PM

I do my own, usually by hand. I wouldn't want anyone else to quilt them - that's the fun part!

Both..I do most of all my small art work ones..send out large ones..however..a member of my quilt group is letting 3 of us come over on Weds. and quilt some of ours on her LA..so we can learn to do it..lol..I may never be able to afford one !!

Buckeye Rose 06-27-2011 12:19 PM

I have been sending my quilts out to LA and about 3-4 weeks is average for me, but am now starting to do my own.

ckcowl 06-27-2011 12:20 PM

i quilt my own- and those of others..turn around time depends on the quilter.
there is a list of long-armer's on the board---you can contact one in your area and ask all kinds of questions- including what (her/his) turn around time is- most of the people i know try to stay within a couple weeks- but i also know quilters who are months and years... everyone is different. i don't like having customer quilts sitting around my house- too worried about something happening---so i (try) to get them done when they come in- and out as quick as possible...but that's me---and there have been a few times when i have been over a month getting one done---each quilt is as individual as each of us-
as for pricing- that varies as much as everything else too- some quilters charge by the square inch- some charge by the quilt= some only do panto's- some do only custom quilting---lots of differences-prices=turn arounds- locations- policies.

I have a short arm on a frame and do my own. One of my friends is a LA, and she did one recently for me to trade for me piecing a top for her.

Borntohandquilt 06-27-2011 12:23 PM

I am a handquilter and do it my own. If I wouldn't I could not call me a quilter - I do wholecloths!

nycquilter 06-27-2011 12:24 PM

I bought an HQ 16 with money left me by my mother--her posthumous gift to me! I used to quilt on my DSM because I don't like relinquishing control. They are not perfect, but I can't be angry at anyone else, and I get to practice, practice practice

BarbaraSue 06-27-2011 12:25 PM

I do my own quilting such as it is. I mostly hand quilt, but I do some machine quilting on my sewing machine. don't have LA. don't really want one....yet.

leatheflea 06-27-2011 12:26 PM

The really good ones around here its a six month waiting list. theres a few that have just started out and the average is a month or more. I've sent out 4 to be done, but no more. Learning to do it myself.

ontheriver 06-27-2011 12:39 PM

Used to hand quilt all mine but now learning to FMQ on DSM. Still not very good but I think it is so much fun and I am happy with them.

Jennifer22206 06-27-2011 12:41 PM

I do my own on my domestic machine. Though to be fair I should say that I have sent one out to Charisma

SparkMonkey 06-27-2011 12:41 PM

Always my own, always by hand. I get impatient with the piecing because I want to do the quilting!

sall 06-27-2011 12:44 PM

I quilt all mine by hand. That to me is the best part of making the quilt

donnajean 06-27-2011 12:45 PM

I quilt my own quilts, but not with LA

Chele 06-27-2011 12:46 PM

I quilt the smaller ones, but the larger ones go here so I'll have more time to piece: http://www.eaglemountainquilting.com/

Wendy is talented, inexpensive and FAST. I save up a bunch of tops and backings and send them off in a flat rate box. She can get batting cheaper than I can, so I don't have to send (or measure!)that.

Jim's Gem 06-27-2011 01:02 PM

I do all my own on my regular size machine. Can be a real bear!

Floralfab 06-27-2011 01:05 PM

I machine quilt the larger ones and hand quilt smaller ones like wall hangings and table runners.

loves_2_quilt 06-27-2011 01:09 PM

I FMQ my quilts on my Bernina. I have done all sizes from wall hanging to king.

I do my own on a 1956 Singer 301A. She does a great job. The mistakes are operator errors.

lovestosew 06-27-2011 01:32 PM

Anything larger than a baby quilt, I send out.

Mariposa 06-27-2011 01:37 PM

I quilt mine on my HQ 16. Love it!

brushandthimble 06-27-2011 01:41 PM

I quilt my own and for others on my HQ 16. Looking to sell it and upgrade to the Avente.

whinnytoo 06-27-2011 01:47 PM

I do my own on my longarm and others as well. turn around time is 3-4 weeks at most

Candace 06-27-2011 01:48 PM

I've never paid anyone to quilt my quilts. They're all mine;>

Thanks.

I used to quilt all of my own tops, but since the local quilt shop closed, I have no where to lay them out to sandwich & baste. My stack of tops just keeps growing. :(

sarahrachel 06-27-2011 02:06 PM

I hand quilt the large ones and machine quilt the small ones usually because it's easier. I have yet to master either but find that going back and forth keeps me from getting board!

Zebracar 06-27-2011 02:13 PM

I machine quilt my tops that are twin and smaller on my Bernina. Anything larger than a twin I send to a LA. I also always have at least one top I'm hand quilting, just to keep up my skills.

AnnieF 06-27-2011 02:17 PM

I quilt all of my own. Used to hand quilt but find the machine quilting goes so much faster. Only sent out 2 king-sized quilts to LA and felt that I lost control of the process...and I have never had a controling personality so don't know what that's all about!

Debbie B 06-27-2011 02:25 PM

Wish I could send one to Charismah...maybe someday, but for right now I quilt on my little Brother XR9000 and fmq on an older Singer 15-125.

Lindsey 06-27-2011 02:28 PM

first few years I quilted I sent them out but then I decided i wanted to do it all so I could call them mine. I purchased my LA in 05..

wolph33 06-27-2011 02:39 PM

I quilt my own

tutt 06-27-2011 03:05 PM

I do, but don't make anything bigger than twin.

suern3 06-27-2011 03:14 PM

I do FMQ on my Pfaff. Still learning, practicing, but I do have a feeling of accomplishment when they are done! I like to know I've done the whole thing. The last one I completed was 80X80 for my son. I'm now working on a similar size for my daughter. This one is taking me quite a while. I wish I would have started counting the time when I started it, just for fun. Sometimes I have to go so slow that I think it would be faster to hand quilt.!

Pickles 06-27-2011 03:29 PM

I quilt my own I wouldn't want someone else doing my
quilts, I machine quilt with my regular sewing machine and I'm trying the hand quilting out also, hope to get better at it soon. :-D
