I'm very into paper piecing right now! I discovered it in early June while looking for a helicopter pattern. I wasn't able to find what I was looking for, but I found an airplane paper piecing pattern. I called my mom and asked her to explain paper piecing over the phone and that night I started, within 3 days everything, but the quilting was done. I have decided to hand-quilt it, but since it has been so hot I put it away until the fall. I'm making it for our future son (we are planning to adopt as soon as our homestudy is complete and we find a mother looking to make an adoption plan), just in case the baby is a girl I'm also going to make a butterfly quilt (we will be thrilled with a boy or a girl, but since we have two girls, it would be nice to have a little boy). I had so much fun making the airplanes that I started looking for other paper piecing patterns. The next one I started was "Garden Patch", which is so much fun!!!! I can't wait to finish it!!!! Lack of fabric has been my problem. The sample quilt they show looks amazing, so I'm trying to make it similar....not exact or even close, but similar. Like each plant uses different greens, and different browns....so coming up with that many greens and that many browns has been hard. Brown is my struggle right now. Since I need so little I don't want to go and buy, so I'm hoping to find some in my mom's stash. Just need to find the time to go and dig through it all! In the meantime I'm working on another Table Topper that I'm giving as an anniversary gift to my hubby's aunt this upcoming Saturday.

Hope everyone is having a great night!
Hugs!

I love paper piecing. Please show us pictures of your work. :D :D :D :D

Marcia 07-21-2008 06:54 PM

Kelly-I love to paper piece, too, but I think we are in the minority. I love the precision of it and it goes so quickly.

Post a picture of your airplane quilt top. I would love to see it.

Good luck with the adoption. Keep us posted on it too-I think after quilts, babies and kids are the biggest hit on the board!

babeegirl 07-21-2008 06:54 PM

I do and I still have that magazine your blocks are in! Let me know if I can h lp in any way :)

KellyPA 07-21-2008 07:03 PM

I was crushed last night when my mom told me that paper piecing is "cheating" and not real quilting :( I thought it was just another method. Maybe not as impressive as template piecing, but I'm having a great time with it!

Here is where I posted my pictures to the group.....

Marcia....I love the precision too!!! I would never be able to make sure perfect points with template piecing....I'm just not that good!

Hugs!!!

Here is the last one I did.....

I still need to make it into a hexagon and quilt it!

Grandma Cindy 07-21-2008 07:07 PM

I have bought the rulers, paper and even a Carol Doak book/CD but have not found the courage to start. I too like the idea of percisionnnnn ! Some day either my prince will come or I might try to teach myself to paper peice. Which do you think will happen first ? ( oh yeah, I'm 57 soon to be 58  ,llooolllll.)

Grandma Cindy 07-21-2008 07:12 PM

The leopard with the sky full of lightening is fabulous, so cool....

KellyPA 07-21-2008 07:13 PM

Cindy,

Go for it!!!! It is so much fun!!!! You won't regret trying it!!!!

There is actually a free beginner pping pattern on Carol Doak's website. So ahead....give it a try!!! My younger DD who is 8 has done several paper pieced squares......here is one......

That is for my older DD, she picked out all the fabric. I just need to applique the tail on....but I don't know how the applique, so I have been putting it off.

"Not real quilting"? Last I checked paper piecing was just a way to help be more accurate and precise. And from the looks of it you're doing awesome.

:!: WHAT???? I have never heard anyone say that before. Paper piecing is one of many techniques used to make a quilt. So is applique and patchwork!

Sorry to tell you this, but your mom is wrong! Paper piecing is just another way or technique of piecing, nothing "cheating" about it!!! English paper piecing has been around since the 1800's - if that's not "real quilting" what is?

I'm looking forward to seeing the garden quilt together - your vegetables are wonderful :D And what about using fusible for your leopard's tail?

Remember, there is no cheating in quilting - just efficiency & techniques!
:D

I am a paper piecing lover!!

kinkajou 07-21-2008 09:24 PM

I have never tried but I am planning on try it soon. I want to make an alphabet quilt and all of the blocks are paper pieced.

I just read Shelly's great tutorial and learned a lot. Does anyone else know of a good online tutorial for paper piecing?

Quilt4u 07-22-2008 01:36 AM

Just got into it. I made a teddy bear. No pictures; some one needed it in a hurry.

FancyFoot 07-22-2008 01:56 AM

I'm a paper piecing addict :P :P :P

Quilting Aggi 07-22-2008 03:29 AM

It's not cheating. Paper piecing is just another technique.

Ruth, I thought there was no way I could do it, but I did.
I figure if I can do it, anyone can.
Just give it a try. Start slow, go slow and you'll see, it's really easy!

KellyPA 07-22-2008 05:05 AM

Ruth,

I'm sorry, my point wasn't to upset anyone!!!!!!! I was hoping it would give some the courage to give it a try. HUGE HUGS!!!!!

I'm sorry :(

KellyPA 07-22-2008 05:07 AM

Here is a great site to learn pping

Another place to learn

Minda 07-22-2008 05:19 AM

Ruth,
Get some scraps from your stash and give it a try. If you wait until you think you can do it, you'll never start. You need to sit down at your sewing machine and sew the pieces as you read the instructions. I know you can do it. You're a quilter!

Kelly,
This is at least one time when you shouldn't listen to your mom. There are many, many ways to quilt and piece fabric. Paper piecing is one of them. :-) :-) :-)

sandpat 07-22-2008 05:34 AM

Ruth, you can do it...boy...if I can...anybody can! Do like me, take it really slow, think it through and oh yeah..keep that seam ripper close by or use scraps and keep the waste basket close.

Kelly, your blocks look great, you are having fun...what else do you need? Evidently, NOT wrong advice from you mother...UGH!

KellyPA 07-22-2008 11:53 AM

My mom came over today with some brown fabrics, so I'm ready to work on my Garden patch again. I have two gifts I need to finish, but hopefully by Friday they will be done and I will be able to work on the garden again!

Mom said some hurtful things about my finished pieces, but that is nothing new. I ate some ice cream, but that didn't really help.

hope everyone is having a great day!
hugs!

SaraSewing 07-22-2008 12:56 PM

I am really into PP. I have just finished a wallhanging, but need to get the backing. So I"ll show you when it's totally done. I've made lots of blocks for my sample quilt and I love it. Kinda makes a mess on the floor, but that shows I"m working hard, huh? I found that it dulls my rotary cutter to trim the back seams, so I have a "dull one" just for that!

Bill'sBonBon 07-22-2008 01:28 PM

I love to paper piece I just don't like to tear it out. I could never be so accurate on the points if I didn't paper piece. I do it without paper piecing. I have the very first blocks I ever did without paper piecing. I think about 12. I really need to get them out and make a quilt with them. Maybe one day.  But i probably will paper piece it.

Some of us are paper-piece challenged. I can usually get them after 4-5 rejects, but by then, the fun is looooong gone!

Skeat 07-22-2008 03:33 PM

Kelly, paper piecing is not cheating:)I know for I thought the same thing and said it outloud like an idiot at a quilting group...! Okay, I went home and adding more blonde highlights after that conversation because I deserved to look lighter:))LOL I honestly thought that because it is easy for me to do too and assumed it was for everyone. But, not so. So, tell mom...unless she wants to be really blonde, not to repeat that statement either:)) I am now educated on that not being so:))And, if you enjoy it...do it:0)I love to paper piece and find it really relaxing! Skeat

Skeat 07-22-2008 03:44 PM

BTW...awesome job on that block!! Love the colors too! SKeat

gcathie 07-22-2008 03:49 PM

That is so awesome....I'm like Ruth...I tried and just had a heck of a mess but now that I've got a few years under my belt I just may try again since so many say it's so easy....Thanks for the sites.....all ready checked them out and will try... :D

Kelly, I am sorry that your mom has hurt you by the things she has said to you. I think you are a very talented quilter and I'm sure I am not the only one here who thinks so. Keep posting and we will be the support you need for your quilting.

KellyPA 07-22-2008 06:26 PM

Thanks Ladies,

I made this today.....

It's for my great Aunt's 90th birthday tomorrow! I thought this would brighten up her room.

Hugs!

tlrnhi 07-22-2008 07:04 PM

That is really cute!
Was it a pattern that you bought or did you find it online?

KellyPA 07-22-2008 07:07 PM

It is a pattern I purchased online.....it's from http://piecebynumber.com/ She has great patterns and is very good about emailing them to you quickly! They come in PDF format so you can get started right away. I have purchased other patterns from her and she also has freebies on her site!

Grandma Cindy 07-22-2008 07:19 PM

KellyPA,
Thanks for the encouragement, I will show you my first piece, when I get to it. I love those veggies!

Cordelia 07-22-2008 07:21 PM

If you love paper piecing, check out this woman's site. You won't believe some of the blocks she has.

And check out her mystery quilts too. This is a German site.

She's got some of the best paper pieced patterns on the web.
