When you find fabric you LOVE,but don't know what you want to do with it,how much do you buy?
If I LOVE it, I will buy a minimum of 3 yds... but more if my pocketbook doesn't scream too loud :D:D:D
I love to empty bolts. I will take all that is on a bolt if it is something I truly like/love. At my local Joann's, I'm known at the "Bolt Emptyer".
Because I do mostly scrappy quilts and raw edge applique I buy in fairly small quantities. 1/4, 1/2 yards at a time. If it is a fabric that seems as though it would be really good for a border, such as a stripe, I buy about 2 1/2 yards. Of course, it also depends on the price. If a REALLY good sale (75% off) I buy more than I would normally.
It depends on how I can see it being used. Border fabric usually requires 3-4 yards. Background or neutral, 1-2 yrds. Some I know I'll use for bags or small projects and will just get a yard.
Given my finances, and the fact that I like scrappy quilts - I buy 1/2 to 1 yard. I only buy more if I have a particular project in mind.
Depends on how close it is to pay day and how many gifts cards I've hoarded.

The last time I found a fabric that I really, really LOVE I bought 7 yards. The time before that I bought 10 yards.
at least 3 yards 5 if it is a good deal
If I really like it, then I'll make sure to buy enough to back a full size quilt, plus a little extra.
2 yds long enough for twin size anything
If I like it I buy 1 yard
If I love it I buy 3-5 yards If I can't live with out it I buy the whole bolt.. |

I usually buy 3 yds - sometimes up to 8 yds - depending on the fabric - with muslin I buy the small bolts at JoAnn's everything else is LQS fabric.
it depends...sometimes i really really like a fabric but look at it and really can not imagine a real project with it...i buy a fq or maybe a 1/2 yard...then i look at a fabric i love and think,...omg...i can use that in so many different projects and i buy as much of it as i can afford at the time. and remember where it came from ... just in case i want more.
I have never been sorry that I have bought too much of a special fabric - BUT have been very sorry that I did not buy enough.

Same thing I do! |
If I dont know what I'll be using it for I get 3 yds.
I usually buy 2 yards. Yesterday I went to my favorite QS and saw wonderful pink and black fabrics and bought 2 yards of each (there were three in collection) and best of all-it was 50% off so I got fabric for $4.50 a yard and I am thrilled. Now I have to figure what to do with it, and hubby has not seen it yet as I hid it in my stash.I can always get other colors for fillers but the colors are so striking.
I'm starting to buy at least 2 yards. :thumbup:If it's on sale I'm going to buy more.
I found a beautiful fruit fabric at Hancocks called Fruit Basket before the holidays, made things such as mug rugs and potholders with it. When I went back to get more, of course it was gone. It is not one they reorder so checked at another store, none. Was in Shreveport, LA and checked Hancocks there and they had some, was so thrilled. I bought all they had, 6 yards and got it for 40% off with a coupon.

I usually buy two yards, if I want to use it for backing I'll buy lots.
Usually about 2 metres though it really depends on how much "I Love" the fabric
Maybe1day |
3 yards if I really love it.
I am in the same frame of mind as several others. I like to buy in 3 yard increments. If I really love it, I will buy enough to share with my quilting daughter. And if there is a yard or so let on a bolt I will buy the rest of it.
If I see it as a backing, I'll buy 8-10, enough for the back and some on the front. If I really like it usually about 5 or 6 yards or the end of the bolt.. Of course I always find the best buys and the best fabric when the pocket only has change in it...LOL
10 yards, i like a lot
If I don't have a plan for the fabric, I usually buy 3 yards.
all of it!
If it is a fabric that I consider to be a good basic fabric then I will buy 3-4 yards. If I like it I will buy 1 yard and if I love it I will buy 2-3 yards.
I almost always buy at least 3 yards, more if I really like it.
I am still a newbie to this quilting thing - but I also sew clothes, etc. - I usually get 3 yards (depending on price, of course), then I have enough for almost anything my heart desires. :-)

Beings as how I am not a scrappy quilter I always buy at least 3 yards. I feel that way I will most likely have enough of that one particular pattern to finish piecing a top. I have bought less and ran out of fabric before top was done and couldn't find anymore of it. Lesson learned.LOL
If I really love it and dont know what I am going to make with it..anywhere from three to five yards lol.

I usually always buy a yard. if it is on sale i have been known to buy 3 yards.
I buy 3 yards. That way I'll have enough for a border if I want to use the fabric for the quilt I'm making. For blender fabrics or whites and creams, I buy a bolt of each. When the bolts get down to 1/2,then I'll buy more to keep the stock up.It sounds like a lot and it is at the begining, but after that it's not so much.
