Twisted Quilter 06-07-2010 07:23 AM

I'm just curious...on average, how much do you spend when making a quilt? I think I invested about $30.00 in my first quilt. I haven't purchased binding or backing so the cost is definitely going up. Hopefully, I can really get my monies worth w/my JoAnn's 50% off coupon.

I know there's a lot of variables, but just wondering.

Good gosh, I think I had well over $500.00 in my avatar quilt. But the photos ran about $300.00, and the fabric was all LQS. And that isn't counting the new sewing machine!

Dagny 06-07-2010 07:28 AM

Probably on average, $200-250, but as Gaigai said, $500 wouldn't be out of the question. If I'm going to go through that much effort, I want the materials to be worthwhile also.

thequilterslink 06-07-2010 07:29 AM

on full size and larger quilts i spend between 80.00 and 150.00 on tops alone, then add batting, backing if i dont' get the fabric on sale.

Scissor Queen 06-07-2010 07:31 AM

I buy a whole lot of my fabric on sale so I have a good stash to pull from so it's really hard to say. I think some of my quilts have cost between $100 to $150 for all the fabric and batting. I have made a whole bunch of scrap quilts out of the leftovers though so that brings the cost way down.

I do have some quilts that cost a whole lot more because they were BOM bought at full price at the LQS. I bought them because I liked the pattern and to help support the LQS.

quiltinghere 06-07-2010 07:33 AM

I buy fabric when I see it...usually on sale days.

But I recently purchased over $100 to add to a 'scrap' quilt I was making...just to make the colors RIGHT.

Guess it's what you can afford at the time.

IrishNY 06-07-2010 07:34 AM

I don't spend as much as the previous posters but I don't make bed size quilts, just bigger lap quilt size. And I usually use some fabrics from the stash that I have no idea how much I paid for them originally. I'll guess around $100 - that's 10-12 yards of fabric so that's probably close. That's just the direct cost - I'm not counting the machine or the longarm or all the tools and rulers that I have amassed. Fully loaded, the cost would be much higher. I don't think I want to know. :|

I am only counting the fabric that gets used in the quilt. Not the fabric that I buy for it but don't use and add to my stash.

athenagwis 06-07-2010 07:40 AM

Yeah most of my quilts are smaller, but I have a hard time buying fabrics that have no current purpose, so I miss out on most of the sales. I’d say I usually spend $100 to $150.

lol, I don't like to think about it. Probably why I do a lot of scrap quilts, so I don't feel like I'm throwing money away ;-)

I find that when I buy yardage for that one special quilt, I can still see the fabric in two more scrap quilts. I stretch my quilting dollar as far as I can.

dkabasketlady 06-07-2010 07:52 AM

I don't want to think how much I've spent for each quilt. I could take a really nice vacation, lol! Vacations come & go, but quilts are here to stay(hopefully).

I go To The Sea To Breathe 06-07-2010 08:01 AM

I have only made charity quilts so far, and scrap quilts. The only time I purchased fabric has been like FQ from here or a panel, or FQ from my LQS, 2 or 3 at a time. And my charity quilts have been lap size. But someday when all the fabrics line up I will doi one for my bedroom and one for everyone of the kids and all my special friends and my 3 sisters. This is if I can live to be several hundred years old. LOL

MoMoSews 06-07-2010 08:08 AM

Depending on the size $80 to $120. But I don't buy at JoAnns.
Usually quilt store fabric or ebay.

LaurieE 06-07-2010 08:09 AM

I would have to say mine averages $200-$300 and that includes backing and batting. I'm not buying much fabric any more. I have so much in my stash that I need to use. I only buy fabric if I need something special that I don't have.

MollieSue 06-07-2010 08:10 AM

Mine have all been couch size, or smaller for the grandkid ones. I think I've usually spent about $60 or so for each.

Janetlmt 06-07-2010 08:12 AM

I think I spend on the average about 70-150.00 on fabric for a quilt. I just finished a top for my son, it was king size and I have 150.00 in fabric. I am spoiled..I love nice fabric..but am a bargain hunter. Our LQS is way to expensive their fabric starts at 10.00 a yard. I refuse to pay that.

sewcrafty 06-07-2010 08:19 AM

Never really thought about it. Don't know if I really want to know!!!  I buy, but yet still end up pulling from stash so really don't know.

GrammaNan 06-07-2010 08:38 AM

As little as possible right now. If I had more $$ the sky would be the limit if I had a fabric that I couldn't live without.

CAROLJ 06-07-2010 08:48 AM

My current quilt, the cost of thread, it is scraps, the previous, about 50.00 including batting. I try to keep everything under 100.00 including the batting. I get fabric off Ebay, Esty, at garage sales, thrift shops and such. I will piece the back, and that also helps save on cost. (Plus I like the look of the back pieced.) My patterns and books are even used!

I have to stay on a budget, but I don't feel like I have compromised in quality. I tend to make art, scrap or crazy quilts and I like how the challenge of buying "altenatives" leads to creativity.

mytwopals 06-07-2010 09:07 AM

I usually spend around $150 in fabric just for the top. But I do buy extra, to build up a little stash. For instance, if the pattern calls for 1 yard, I'll buy 2 yards.

ckcowl 06-07-2010 09:18 AM

probably between 250 and 500 for queen size quilts...some LOTS more, some maybe less...this year i've been doing great, using my stash and not buying other than batting, so this years quilts have been much less expensive...bad news is though, i've about run out of decent size pieces, and tired of my stash...almost time to start buying again :)
i am almost done piecing a queen size flannel quilt for my sister, all out of scraps, and it is turning out great...will post pics soon!

ToucanSam 06-07-2010 09:20 AM

I'm in denial. I have no idea. Well, I have an idea, but don't want to dwell on it. :)

Joan 06-07-2010 09:20 AM

I just don't keep track, it would ruin the fun for me. Right now, I make mostly smallish quilts and rummage through my stash. Usually, I can find something I like and with a little additional fabric I'm good to go.......

But, I do need to add that a sale gets me in mood to buy and that I have found lots of great fabric at yard sales for practically nothing......

ckcowl 06-07-2010 09:26 AM

meant to tell (on my self) the first BIG quilt i made, king size dragon fly stained glass dragonfly quilt for my daughter's wedding present...started with a class for a stained glass block, class, pattern, fabric ect started me out with $125...then i had to make that center block (24"x30") into a king size quilt...spent almost $700 more before it was done...then went to the local quilt shop to find out...what now...they gave me a business card and said...call him, he will get it quilted for you and take good care of you. I made the call, took in the quilt...was told he charges 2.25 cents per square inch...ok, what ever that means, i don't care, wedding is in 3 weeks i need the quilt. He did a wonderful job!!!quilting cost? $385. I almost had a heart attack!decided i could never make another quilt...unless i learned to quilt them myself.
i have not done anything even close to that since, it was very overwhelming.even though my daughter tried very hard to keep wedding expenses to a minimum...lots of things sure wound up costing... about 6 months later i bought my self a longarm so i could keep quilting...i figure it paid for itself within a year. :)

seamstome 06-07-2010 09:39 AM

Material, thread, batting, backing and longarm quilting it is in the 200-500 range. Im doing a king that will probably end up about 800.

craftybear 06-07-2010 09:45 AM

just making small projects right now, lap quilts

mpspeedy 06-07-2010 09:52 AM

Ihave been quilting for more than 40 years and have a huge stash. I would say over the years I have averaged out to at least $300 per bed quilt. I shop wherever I can find fabric. I purchase stuff on sale whenever possible. I took a friend on a tour of three different fabric shops a couple of weeks ago. She needs to make a quilt for a wedding present. I ended up spending $100. She didn't get anything and still hasn't made up her mind. I don't even have anything in particular in mind for the fabric and notions I purchased. I do make at least two Linus quilts a week or more. I often donate fabric, backing or batting to the quilt projects we are doing at the Senior Center. I purchased 4 yards of fabric to complete the top I am currently assembling for them last week. I got lucky it was on a final clearance sale for basically $3 a yard.

sharon b 06-07-2010 09:52 AM

There are just some things I don't want to know  LOL Some cost more than others , just depends on size , how soon I have to get it done ( if quickly can't wait for sales  ) who it is for , etc...

Pineapple Princess 06-07-2010 09:53 AM

I don't think I've ever spent more then $50, but then again, I don't make much money, so I have to be frugal.

I've got three queen size quilts in the works that will probably end up in the $800 range by the time I get thru paying to have them longarm quilted.

theresse 06-07-2010 10:23 AM

About 6 years ago, I was ask to make a Qt for a raffle for horse club. They would pay for fabric. It was $226.00 all I donated was my labor. The Qt was a twin and tyed.I didn't know how to machine Qt then.

marsye 06-07-2010 10:30 AM

Oh probably way less than 100.00....I shop at Walmart

bearisgray 06-07-2010 10:40 AM

One can "do the math" -if one is so inclined - or a guesstimate
If one is uses a pattern - yardages are included

Quilting can be a very expensive recreation/hobby/avocation if one buys only LQS regularly priced items.

Forget about the machines, rulers, cutters, etc. that are -more-or-less - one time purchases.

One can "get by" for less with donations or other cost-saving measures.

Pam 06-07-2010 10:44 AM

I do most of my shopping from my stash. I am working on a batik sampler now. I bought the 3 background black fabrics and pulled all of the batiks from my stash, I counted and I started with 75 batiks and have added more. I have NO idea what it would cost if I were to go out and buy fat quarters and fat eights to make this with.

I usually only purchase for my stash wehn fabrics are on sale, I usually buy 3 yards, wash press and store for the right project to come along that calls for that particular piece.

hobo2000 06-07-2010 10:55 AM

My show quilts $300-500, sales quilts 200-300, family quilts to use everyday 125-150. baby quilts to use 25-40 for baptisms 125-150. Now that we have a "Tin Lizzie" I don't include cost for longarming. Guess I should but that would be frightening.

Katia 06-07-2010 11:26 AM

I tell myself and my husband that figuring out the amount of money spent is just not allowed. For me it would take all the fun out of the project.

My first real quilt of any size started out with buying one charm pack on Ebay. Then decided I had to make a quilt from that line, so I ordered three more. Then two quilt shops for sashing and border as well as a fabric order from an online store. It started out in my mind as a throw for the couch, but now will be about queen size, I think. I ordered another charm pack to make it a little bigger. And am pretty sure I will need a little more for the binding. Oh, and I guess it needs a back and batting too. My sweet husband keeps telling me to get what I need, don't go cheap. I suppose I could add up receipts, but I don't really need or want to know.

hobo2000 06-07-2010 11:33 AM

You are right. When you start thinking about how much you have invested in a project, you stop taking chances with your
creativity and become more worried about making a mistake. Some of my "winners" were because I made a mistake in what I started and had to keep changing to make it all work.

yorkiemom 06-07-2010 12:25 PM

I don't keep track. I figure as long as I can still pay my bills I'm doing okay. :)

MadQuilter 06-07-2010 12:51 PM

If I pull all the fabric from my stash, then it's free. Right? lol

brushandthimble 06-07-2010 12:57 PM

depends on the size of the quilt, if I was a able to get the backing on sale at the LQS. I use JoAnn's coupon for Warm and Natural.

mygirl66 06-07-2010 01:02 PM

I just finished a D9P for under $50, and that was using Moda fabric, good quality bleached muslin for a wide boarders, I was happy! :D
