My BFF found this pattern card in Shipshewanna. It is a little wallet designed by Valori Wells Designs. I made one and my neighbors loved it and asked to make some for them but I have no idea what to charge. The finished size ,closed, is 3 in by 5 in. The pattern used sew on snaps but I like the home spun look of buttons and I added a key ring. Do you think $4 is too much or not enough? What would you sell them for?

charismah 07-11-2011 01:40 PM

12$
They are adorable!

maine ladybug 07-11-2011 01:41 PM

I've made that pattern and it is a cute little wallet. I would say that if they are good friends $4 is fine. If they are just people you know I would charge more like $5 or $6. JMHO

blueangel 07-11-2011 01:44 PM

I would charge at least $6.

I agree!

Personally - $4 is not enough for these. For that price, I'd buy a box full. I would charge $8 - $12, depending on the economy of your area. You've put a lot of work into these - buttonhole, button, keyring. Add the cost of fabric, thread, your time to cut and assemble. Your fabrics are gorgeous and you do very nice work. Your keyrings look like they are color coordinated, too. JMHO

Jennifer22206 07-11-2011 01:51 PM

I'd charge at least $10.

mom-6 07-11-2011 01:53 PM

I consider $5 the absolute minimum charge for anything I make, of course most things I make are given as gifts, but if someone asks how much, I'm trying to get better about valuing my time and resources at a price more consistent with current market value.

I discovered a few months ago that a crocheted item I've made several of that I had charged under $10 for was being sold for $29 at a shop nearby.

So you could easily charge $8 - $10 for these and not be out of line. As maine ladybug mentioned, for very good friends you can charge less but be sure they know they're getting a special price and that you would charge more to the general public.

I agree, at least 12 and maybe even 14.00
I'm sure it took more than and hour to make just one of these.

GGinMcKinney 07-11-2011 02:18 PM

$10.00 minimum.

PaperPrincess 07-11-2011 02:23 PM

$10 - $12.
How long does it take to make one? I'm guessing more than an hour. For $4, figure at least $1 for materials. Do you really want to work for $3/ hour? I think baby sitters get more!

bearisgray 07-11-2011 02:29 PM

Check out Vera Bradley and see what those items go for - - -

Those are really cute. And you did a lovely job on them.

Debbie B 07-11-2011 02:31 PM

$4 sounds like a steal...why not just give it to them. I really don't know what to tell you, but right off the top of my head I think at least $8 - $10 each. They're really pretty.

topper1 07-11-2011 02:33 PM

10-12 dollars

twilight 07-11-2011 02:33 PM

They are really cute and I know they we not too easy and fast to make. Nothing less that $10.00 with the price of fabric now. Some times you can get rements cheaper but your fabric is special. Good luck.

I agree with $12.00. Remember they take time to sew. I Made some quilted tote bags years ago for a co-worker. I charged her for the fabric. I later found out she was selling them, not gifting them. lesson learned for me! Isn't it terrible to have to be so cynical about everything these days. Now I charge for my time and if it is to much for someone, they don't have to buy.

If they were a lawyer or beautician they would not work for free.

ube quilting 07-11-2011 02:44 PM

oops

Wow! Hard to believe that someone would actually do that. She must have thought that she had a sewing slave. Did you stop making them for her or increase the price?

MZStitch 07-11-2011 02:58 PM

I'd charge $8.

tinker 07-11-2011 03:05 PM

You time is worth much, than a gallon of gas! At least $10-$12. Hand made is made better than boughten!! Tinker

Candace 07-11-2011 03:34 PM

OMG for $4 I wouldn't even get out of bed to sew. And for those who are saying $5 or $6....they'd have to be a close, bosom buddy for all that work!!!

dorrell ann 07-11-2011 03:43 PM

$10.00-$15.00

Jan in VA 07-11-2011 04:39 PM

$10-12 absolute minimum.

LindaM49 07-11-2011 04:50 PM

Oh...I agree $4. is not enough. I have a small candle business and have done a lot of craft shows. I usually check out a lot of the other booths...and sometimes buy. I bought one of those "in style" knitted scarves and I paid $20. for it. You HAVE to pay yourself for your time.

I think $10. is a good price.

In figuring my candle price I charge $1.00 per ounce. And if the jar I use is more expensive than a jelly jar then it is price higher. And my candles sell...and no one blinks an eye. lol

Thats what I was going to suggest too!

luckylindy333 07-11-2011 04:52 PM

I'd go by how much I want to make and hour and charge them at least that much, plus materials.

mzmama 07-11-2011 05:04 PM

I think $5 is a great number. I have made tons of these little card cases. They sew up so fast and you can use up your scraps. I think you would sell a lot at $5 then you would charging $12.unless you live in an area that would pay that amount. Just my oppinion...

MamaBear61 07-11-2011 05:10 PM

Those are really cute. I would think $10 at least and maybe more if you are selling in a reasonable market.

chelgvns 07-11-2011 05:14 PM

I would pay 15 for one...I think that's fair.

Aunt Sue 07-11-2011 05:22 PM

Really nice! I was going to say at least 8 or 10

Kristin in ME 07-11-2011 05:28 PM

You need to figure out how long it takes you to make one, and how much you want to make per hour, then add to that the cost of your supplies. $4 is too low.

Kristin in ME 07-11-2011 05:34 PM

The thing is, if something costs more (within reason), people value it more. Also, it may be true that you could sell more individual items if you are selling for a lower cost- but you are also doing more work for the same amount of money. Say you were charging $6 each- you might sell twice as many as you would if you were selling them for $12 each, but you'd also be doing twice as much work. You're better off raising the price and selling less. And don't undervalue your time! You don't need to be working for sweatshop wages.

One more thing- of course it does matter where you are located and what prices things are going for in your area. So you do have to factor that in, unless you are trying to sell to a broader area- as in on-line, Etsy for instance.

imayo 07-11-2011 05:36 PM

Too beautiful. I make all kinds of things for small businesses. I would say you need at least 10-12 dollars to get your money back.

jaciqltznok 07-11-2011 06:07 PM

FIRST you need to make sure via the pattern designer that you are ALLOWED to make them to sell....even if it is just for the neighbors..it could be illegal!

nyelphaba 07-11-2011 07:34 PM

I agree, $10.00 minimum.

Grama Lehr 07-11-2011 07:36 PM

Very cute! I would say you would sell quite a few!!

I agree with you on that. I too know how quickly you can make them and what little fabric they take.

Mariposa 07-11-2011 07:56 PM

At least $10~

4EVERquilt 07-11-2011 08:00 PM
