How much would you pay for Fat Quarters?
So I looked yesterday online and found Fat Quarters on sale for $8.00s a piece normal price was $10.00 I was wondering if that is normal for them to be that price? To me that still seems a little pricey, are you saving money if you get the layer cake instead?
Wow! I never heard of them being that high! The most I have ever seen them listed for is $3.oo!
That is HIGH. I usually pay $3 for a $12.00 fabric. $10 for a fat quarter would mean they sell fabric for $40 a yard. YIKES !!
That must have been a typo - that would make a yard of fabric between $36.00 and $40.00 a yard. NOBODY will pay that amount.
The highest I ever paid for a fat 1/4 was $3.75.... and I thought that was really high.
I would buy yardage instead and delete that site. Most I've paid for a fat quarter was under$3. How much is the layer cake. Layer cakes are normally 10"x10". No way I would pay $8 for a fat quarter.
Wow!
When did Neimann Marcus start selling fabric? Seriously that's way too expensive! |
Were you looking on a European or Australian site by any chance? If not, then I'm presuming it was an error as even here in Canada our Fat Quarters are under $5 usually.
I was at a small quilt show yesterday and the newer lines of fabric the fat quarters were $2.50 each and some had a sale of 10 for $12. I buy fat quarters in bundles online so I didn't buy any single ones. One vendor had a sale: $12 a half yard, now $10 a half yard. The fabric looked the same as all the other fabric. I stood and looked at the sign to be sure I was reading it right. I wished I had taken a picture. I didn't even browse her booth, just moved on.

Individual fat quarters sell for between $2.00 and $4.00 at LQS. One I was in yesterday had them $4.00 each or 3 for $10.00. Her fabrics, mostly batiks generally run $18.00 to $20.00/m.
I do find that sometimes the FQ that the LQS cut tend to look like they were from lines that did not sell. But they do stock the precut at the manufacturer ones as well. Interestingly the price (up until a couple months ago the last time I looked) for the manufacturer precuts was the same as they are sold for in the USA. I will have to check now that the Canadian dollar is work so much less if that stays the same. |
Ja's has them for $1 on sale. i wait for sales, and yes, i do buy at JA's. i have to conserve what i have.
No, I would not pay that! There are too many good places to buy for a more reasonable price.
That sounds way too high to me too. I usually see them for between $1.50-3.00 each. But I usually buy yardage, not FQ.
On a guild shop hop yesterday, we visited 3 stores. Prices for fat quarters ranged from $2.75 to $3.25, with one store offering 20% fat quarters if 5 or more were purchased.
Maybe these were duponi? |
Maybe she was looking at a stack of FQ, for that price.
Even here in UK I've never seen fat quarters more than £4 . Our fabric prices are going up but not that high yet.
I am always amazed at just how cheap quilting fabric/supplies are in the US.
Here in Australia if you can buy a f/q for less than $5 you have found a bargain. |
Have never seen them more than 3.99. LQS will cut a fat quarter for you so will only buy one if I need a certain one and there isn't any more of that fabric on a bolt. Otherwise I buy a 1/4 yd.

Fixed Question (It was Charm Packs)
I'm sorry it wasn't Fat Quarters it was a charm pack and it was for $7.50 on sale $10.00 normal price! I wanted to know if that was the going price for them but I'm glad I asked the other question too.
This past week Joann's down here had fat quarters for 75 cents each, they are usually 2.49, I didn't buy as many as I thought I would as most seemed very thin and not in the colors/patterns I was looking for, but I still got about a dozen or so. I can't imagine paying 8 bucks for one fat quarter, holy moly.
--- ETA: I just saw your post above with it being charm packs (I must type awfully slow lol) - 8.00 seems pretty reasonable for one of those. |
are you sure it wasn't a set of 4 fat quarters. I usually pay about 2-2.50 a piece for them
Was it Liberty of London fabric? That stuff is $30+ a yard, so a $10 FQ would actually make sense.
I bought a bundle of fats for way too much but will be more watchful next time, usually buy from the bolt...where I shop, it's more economical than fats. An exception is at Tueday morning where they have some nicely reduced prices. At Hancocks in no little rock, I bought some beautiful, nice quality blue houndstooth patterned fabric for $1.59/yd. bought all that was left on the bolt.
The only place that I have seen fabric this expensive was in France, and I surely did not buy any.
I paid $20 for 7 FQs today (in a clearance basket) in my LQS. The basket had just been restocked so I was able to get 7 light FQs, even better. FQs here usually cost about $6.50 each (Tasmania, Australia).

I just bought four FQ Bundles (5 FQ) for $399 each at Tuesday Morning, it was high quality fabric too. Would have bought more if they had them.

I don't really buy fat quarters anymore, seems the cost never a good deal.
Prices like that are out of line. Are you sure that the price is not for a line of Fat Quarters? I've picked up Fat Quarters like that, but it was for a project and all I needed to do was add the usual stuff (sashing, batting and backing). If this is an online purchase, contact customer services with your questions (ie:how many Fat Quarters do you get at this price?). Good luck

That is way too high....I can buy nice fat quarters for 3.99 for 5.
wow,I would never pay that much.
Joann had fat quarters for .75 sat
When I see fat quarters I always have to remind myself to "do the math!"
Wally world sells them for 99 cents--Jo Anns here start at about $2.00
I have paid $2.45 for FQ's at quilt shows, but only for fabrics I cannot find locally. Since my favorite store closed two years ago (they sold FQ's for $.99), I have found I purchase fewer FQ's. I frequently purchase 1/2 yards of fabric and cut my own FQ's for swaps, etc.
