You just love the material but have no idea what you are going to make? I need suggestions. Do you buy a yard? 2 yards? Help!

And thank you in advance for your replys.

quiltsRfun 10-23-2010 07:11 AM

At least a yard - maybe two - depending on where it might go in the quilt. If it could be focus fabric or borders then two yards. I tend to make smaller quilts so this usually works for me.

littlehud 10-23-2010 07:17 AM

I buy three or four if I'm really in love with it. I'll find a quilt to use it in.

luv-e 10-23-2010 07:37 AM

I agree with everyone so far. If I love it, it will be focus fabric and I buy 3-4yds. More if it is on sale.hehehehehe

bizybess 10-23-2010 07:38 AM

I buy at least three yards so that if I decide to use for a border there will be enough for that and some for the body of the quilt. But take my advise, if you want length of fabric borders cut them first and then use what's left in your quilt.

Scissor Queen 10-23-2010 07:40 AM

Well, from the looks of it I buy either 2 or 3 yards at least and sometimes more. I just organized my stash and got it all put away and those are the biggest stacks.

StitchinJoy 10-23-2010 07:40 AM

If I think it's possible borders or backing and it's on sale, I buy 2 yds, or 4yds, or 6, or 9, or sometimes a bolt!

Mattee 10-23-2010 07:42 AM

I often buy three, especially if it would work well as a border.

np3 10-23-2010 08:28 AM

I will buy three yards of the "favorite" and 1-2 yards of the companion fabrics. I love collections.

dellareya 10-23-2010 08:44 AM

It all depends on how close it is to pay day and sales. Pay day in our house is only once a month and some months get mighty long.

Oh YES The more the better LOL

tucsonquilter 10-23-2010 09:57 AM

Thanks for all the suggestions. Sounds like I fit right in with you all. LOL

Aully 10-23-2010 10:06 AM

I always buy minimum of 3, if I really love it I buy 5. :)

IrishNY 10-23-2010 10:09 AM

I buy two to three yards if I think it's a focus or border print. I tend to buy a yard of something I consider a blender or accent fabric.

I have been caught wanting more of the 1 yard buys occasionally but not often enough to change my habit.

Maggiemay 10-23-2010 10:55 AM

I usually buy a yard, but have had to rethink that because that is not really enough for a lot of my projects!

Iluv2quilt 10-23-2010 01:20 PM

I would buy at least three yards.

deema 10-23-2010 01:48 PM

i'll buy a meter if i just like it, 2 if i love it, 3 if i can't live without it...or as much as i can afford. lol

DEEMA, I like the way you think.....hehehehe

sewingladydi 10-23-2010 02:16 PM

I almost never buy just a yard anymore unless I know exactly what I'll use it in and absolutely know that is enough.

I've got a lot of 1 yard cuts, but when I go to use them, it's not enough. Besides, I always figure anything left over an be used in a scrap quilt or for applique.

Always more than a yard, 2 or more. If I love it, 4 or more. If it's on a good sale 5 or 6. I am so glad my husband doesn't read this!!1

pieces 10-23-2010 03:15 PM

I usually buy 1 yard of fabric. This allows me to buy an assortment of fabrics for my scrap quilts. If its on sale and I know I can use it in several quilts, maybe 2. (?)
But I have to really like the fabric and know it will be versitile.

Dollysquiltingmom 10-23-2010 03:18 PM

I plea the 5th. LOL I know I need to join a 12 step program but then that would take all the fun out.

leonajo 10-23-2010 03:25 PM

I like scrappy, so I buy alot of 1 yd pieces, but if I love it, 3-5 yd.

tucsonquilter 10-23-2010 03:29 PM

I went with a friend to an AA meeting to support her (I have never been to one before) and all through it I thought......there needs to be a Quilter's Anonymous (QA) for those of us who have way too much fabric and keep buying. It can be very addictive.

Aussie Quilter 10-24-2010 01:35 AM

At $25+ per metre I can't afford to impulse buy. Just buy what I need, when I need it.

I'm reading this string & thinking that I fit in well too. Pretty much..."she who ends up with the most fabric wins!" LOL!!! I love it! I'm running out of places to stash it in our motorhome right now, though! Quilting, quilting, quilting! :-)

lauriejo 10-24-2010 02:32 AM

I got a chuckle out of this, I asked the same question just a couple of days ago. But, I think I may have decided what I am going to make so that will help.

Julie Baird 10-24-2010 03:38 AM

Anymore, I almost always buy quarters and fat quarters, and mostly of reproduction fabrics. What can I say? I love to make scrap quilts with lots of fabrics.

Why use one red when four will do?

Julie

crella boudon 10-24-2010 05:32 AM

if i like the fabric i always at least 10 yrd's

Janj 10-24-2010 05:47 AM

If it is fabric I really believe only use in 1 specific quilt it might be a yd., but generally buy 2-3 yards when fabric I like... Nothing worse than going back for more and find not available....

sherrill 10-24-2010 05:50 AM

Helen,I can't imagine fabric so expensive, are all prices high?
I wonder if all items are so costly.
Sherrill Libby from Maine. And its cold here but with a warm up due

Chatfield 10-24-2010 05:54 AM

I used to buy one yard - that never seemed like enough so now I generally pick up 2 yards and if you think you would want it for the border too, better get 3 yards!!

Boy oh boy - - can I ever relate to this. I swear I have 100 yards of red (insert ANY color here) fabric. All in 1/4 & 1/2 yard pieces. And none of them match. :-D

nena 10-24-2010 06:40 AM

I used to buy 1 yard if I had no idea what I was going to use it for. Then I found out that I usually need at least another 1/2 yd. Does not matter what I was doing I always needed a little more. So now I never buy under 2 yards. If I grab it and guard it with my life until its cut. I usually buy 4 or 5 yds.

when I was at the quilt show in Des Moines I bought 3.5 yards of this. I don't recall ever having a fabric take my breath away but this one did. The snowflakes are a silver sparkle that doesn't show in the picture

EagarBeez 10-24-2010 06:50 AM

I buy at least 3, probably more, since there is no place close to me, and I have to wait till we either visit family, or drive over an hour away. I do also buy online, so that is a big help as well

steelecg 10-24-2010 07:09 AM

I tend to buy fat quarters or 1/4 yards if I don''t know how I will use it, but I buy everything the pattern calls for if I want to do a certain project.

Anywhere from 2 up to 10 if I think I will use it as a back or for room decor.

Me too, at least 3 yards and I just recently found a pattern I fell in love with, it was on sale and I bought 8 yards! When it was delivered I knew I had done the right thing as I can already see what I'm going to do with it. Companion fabrics usually 1 to 2 yards, but it depends how large the piece is going to be. My problem is that when I see a fabric I love it is hard to be logical. The ultimate determining factor is how much I have in my quilt budget and at the rate I've been going there isn't much left.

that is exactly why I got 3.5 yards. There was 8 left on the bolt but it was$10 per yard & I just couldn't spend that much  I did go for 3.5 instead of 3 but that was my absolute limit
