Don't back stitch but do use a starter fabric to keep the edges from being eaten up in the machine then just keep sewing one then the next. At the end of the row I see my starter fabric on for the next line of blocks I start. It also saves a lot of thread this way.

I use a smaller stitch..No back stitch.
