I mean, small wall hangings? table runners? pot holders? place mats? small couch throws that aren't really big enough to cover a person? Just because they are quilted handcrafts, are they "quilts" or do we call them something else? Just wondering.

If it's smaller than a baby or lap size, I usually call it what it is . . . "wall hanging", etc. Maybe "quilted wall hanging"...
|
Coasters can be quilted.
|
I have some minatures that I still call quilts. I call my doll quilts quilts too. On regular size patterns, anything big enough to use as a "person cover" is called a quilt. If it's not to cover a person, I call it "quilted" for wallhanging, tablerunner, table topper, mug rug, etc.

I think work is work.. pot holder quilted, for barbie doll or larger doll. Here are guide lines I found from NQA. Unless your piece is for judging.. Be proud! Enjoy! and do one project at a time and be happy you finished it what size you want.
:0) Ell National Quilting Association http://nqaquilts.org/judges/judges-faq.php •Isn't any small quilt considered a miniature? The answer to this question is no. A miniature quilt is a design that has been reduced in scale. Simply because a quilt is the size required for the category does not make the quilt a miniature. All of the various quilt components — the overall design, quilting design and stitches, binding, embroidery or other surface techniques, or embellishments need to be reduced in scale. |
they can be pretty small.... at the quilt museum in paducah, they displayed many gorgeous mini quilts. so if they can call them quilts, i guess we can too :)
|
I tend to think of a quilt (as opposed to a quilted whatever) as being big enough to wrap around or cover someone or something...ie baby quilt, lap quilt, bed quilt, dog quilt, doll quilt.
A quilted tote, quilted placemat, quilted coasters, quilted wallhanging, quilted toy, quilted tablerunner, quilted jacket, quilted hat, etc. are items that use the quilting technique in construction. They are as much a part of the quilting family as a regular quilt, but they also may require some additional or different methods of completion. If they are entered in a quilt show they are usually in separate categories from other quilts, which may also have several different categories. |
Isn't anything that's sandwiched and quilted, by definition a quilt? :)
|
If it's got three layers sewn together it's a "quilt" - no matter what size. Now you can call it a mini, a runner, a wall hanging, or whatever, but it's still a quilt. IF however, you look only at the usefulness of the object, then ONLY those that are used for covering should be called quilt which includes knee throws and doll quilts but no wall hangings. Isn't it fun to make up your own rules?

I agree with those that say a quilt is a top batting and backing. If it's got three layers sewn together, it is a quilt!
|
If I quilt it I call it a quilt. My coasters, potholders, doll blankets have and can be all quilted. It's more of an expression of style of finishing a sewn item, in my opinion.

I think if it has two or more layers that are fastened together and is intended to look like a quilt, I don't have a problem calling it a quilt. |

I have never seen a summer quilt but thought about making one like that --- since it's not quilted is it a quilt? :-) not that I really care I still will make one and call it a 'throw'

To me, they looked like quilts... |
Size doesn't matter...but I'm probably biased. My art quilts are as small as 6x6 mounted on an 8x8 canvas. Many other quilt artists also work small scale these days and they are all considered quilts as long as they follow the '3 layers held together by stitch' guideline.

a quilt is 3 layers held together with stitching- size has nothing to do with it.
|
three layers its always a quilt.

Far as I know, there is no size limit. Minatures are pretty popular around. And if you haven't seen the minis at quilt show you might want to notice them next show time. As long as it has three (3) layers and is connected with thread, yarn, etc., it is a quilt.
|
I made clothespin reindeer for Christmas ornaments and made each reindeer a QUILT for his back.
|
I may be stupid, but I even call my 3" quilted name tags a quilt.

Tomayto....Tomahto.....

Does it really matter what you call it? As long as you had fun making it and it makes you or someone else happy then it really doesn't matter what you call it.

Interesting question! I belong to a group in which we record our fabric purchases and usage (only for ourselves to help "control" the stash) and I also post my completed projects. From June - August, I pieced, quilted and bound 15 quilts each measuring 36" x 48" that were donated to veterans taking the Honor Flight from Toledo, OH to Washington, D.C.
I counted those 15 quilts in my totals only to have a couple of people e-mail me and say that I should not list them individually, but perhaps count 2 as 1 because they were so small. They said that by counting those 15, I was inflating my totals and it made everyone else's numbers look too low. WHAT?!? Of course I'm still counting them because the numbers are for my use; but I sure was taken back a bit. These quilts were all pieced just like any other quilt and are actually bigger than many of the baby quilts I make (and those e-mail senders as well, according to their blogs). But I digress. I call anything that is pieced and layered a quilt, but sometimes refer to art work as wall hangings rather than quilts. They are still quilts in my mind and I guess I do sometimes refere to them as quilted wall hangings. If you are interested, here's a link to my blog which has pictures of the 15 quilts. http://joanne-everyonedeservesaquilt...of-quilts.html |
I have seen 1"sq quilts
|
In the book "Collectors Guide to Quilts" by Suzy McLennen Anderson, this is the definition she gives. "A quilt is defined as a bed covering, made of three layers of fabric (the top, the back, and the batting, or middle layer)."
Just thought I would throw this into the conversation. I consider a quilt anything a person (or doll, or animal) can cover with. There are a lot of 'quilted' items, but they are not all quilts, IMO. But there are no quilt police here so you can call quilted items whatever you want. |

p.s. Just as a matter of curiosity, what would one DO with a "quilt" that was, oh, say, 36" x 36" besides hang it up? |
I'm thinking when it's a pot holder..but I see coasters listed. NEVER then! That is YOUR definition to place on your work!
|
If you can consider anything quilted a quilt, no wonder people brag about making 200-300 quilts in 5 years. I don't think so. My opinion.
|
I think you answered your own question here. I also make doll quilts and they can be pretty small depending on the doll.

Jan in VA Quilted ornaments are very small. It isn't a size for me, just a process. |
I agree, Jan.

In my book, if there are three layers and they are all bound together with stitching....no matter how small...it's a quilt!
Definition of QUILT 1 a: a bed coverlet of two layers of cloth filled with padding (as down or batting) held in place by ties or stitched designs There are little 1 inch tall dolls, so they probably could use a quilt on their bed! :-D  |
