I have 3 of the bases i use for tables to put my sewing thing on, tool for my longarm ,one for my embroider tools, then my husband usehis for a table saw
I own several of the iron bases made into tables. One, I leave the "leaf" up, have a runner on it and use it as a console table with a small lamp and some antique jugs. I want to order a piece of marble for the top.
I always thought I would like to find two bases and use with large board with one base at each end for a kitchen table. I love them. |
I've seen tables made with these legs and they are great! Have fun with it!
Not at all. My father-in-law built a beautiful entry table from them. I'm hoping it will be mine someday.
Wish I could of found them that's what I've been wanting to do for a long time. Just consider it recycling,it's a good thing. Let me know what you decide..send pics

I have 2 that were made into tables...I also saw someone that only uses treadle sewing machine...she took several sets and made one huge work table for her sewing room with her different machines around the table...it was fantastic...made me go out and buy some more (a guy down the street was selling...he'd been using them as bases of his work tables as he remodeled his new to him home, when he didn't need them any longer as his house was finished...he'd found them in the basement when he bought the house so that's why he was selling them for only $10 so I bought all 4 of them!!! ...now to get the table top made and into my basement sewing cave)

My parents have my father's mother's (my Mammaw) sewing maching legs and foot pedal like that. They put a piece of marble that my mother's mother (my Granny) gave them on top of it to make it a table. To me that is the most beautiful table that I've seen. I really want that piece whenever they decide to let it go. When I go visit this May/June (in Tennessee) I will let them know that I want it -- whenever.

oops...didn't mean to post the same thing twice...my AOL is being quirky today...

yes buy it if it is still there!

Absolutely NOT weird! In fact, a number of years ago, I did just that, and it got nore comments than anything else in my house. We were in college, living on a shoestring, and a friend gave us her mother's old Singer treadle machine. Desperately needing furniture other than a machine, we made a glass top for it, and it soon became our favorite thing. When we moved back to Houston, I sold it for a nice price. The lady who bought it was so pleased with it, she wouldn't even let us help her get it into her car... guess she thought we might change our minds about selling it. :)
There has been an ad on our local craigslist that has a glass topped treadle base for sale. It looks like it would make a nice side table or, as someone else mentioned, a plant stand. If it is a fair price, go for it!
I remember my grandmother having a side table. It was quite old, at one point someone added cast iron singer leg section as you describe. I thought it was a sewing machine
I bought one and put a piece of plywood on top then tiled and trimmed it out. My TV is sitting on it in my living room. I really like it. My mother also has one with a tile top she did and she uses it for plants. I think they make really nice tables/stands.

Would it be weird to buy this and make a table or something from it? Or an old fashioned cabinet (that looks like a sewing machine cabinet) to hold supplies? One set actually is only the sides legs, without the foot pedal or wheel. Would it be weird to buy these and make a desk of it? Buy them and enjoy. I think the desk would be lovely. |
Have to tell you that years ago my DH came home with just the side pieces and treadle bottom of the Singer treadle machine. I was skeptical.......
but he sandblasted and painted it up for me in a high gloss black. I have a beautiful thick piece of green tinted glass on it - it's gorgeous as my computer desk.
Went to a retreat in Kansas once. Every sewing table was made from an old treadle! It was great fun to see all the different versions!
I turned mine into a bathroom sink vanity, I have gotten lots of compliments on it. It is very cool
Not weird - I love make things out of old items. Have fun creating something very nice
I have an old treadle stand with ornate legs and treadle that I topped with glass and have used as a side table and, at one point, a bedsde stand. It love it.
Anything creative is a good thing!
Not weird at all. I have seen different things made from them including a table for a porch and a plant stand in a garden.
Not weird at all. I have a table made out of the treadle legs and really enjoy using it. The tabletop is made of very thick wood - it's probably really old too. They make lovely tables, etc.
I have the legs and tredle with a marble top. I have it in my den and have used it as a side table for many years.
I have one and love it. My grandfather did tile work and built it for me--he was in his mid-80's. Sadly, he used a new grout that did not work well but I treasure it all the same.
I learned to sew on a treadle; my father eventually took it to the dump after keeping two drawers to nail to the wall of the garage to put tools in. I do have the two drawers now and treasure them; they have been cleaned up and will go on the wall in my sewing room.
I do have my grandmother's treadle (cabinet only as the machine wouldn't work after it went through my house fire). That cabinet now houses my DMIL's old Brothers electric machine which she purchased used in 1955. I recently purchased a Singer base with a beautifully-made top; however, someone had painted the frame white (terrible). I intend to have it redone and a new top made to fit my new Viking-Diamond machine with embroidery arm. Am very excited to do this. |
They make great little tables. See them often at flea markets/antique shops.
I have one that I made a table out of. Love it
go for it!! sounds like it would make a neat table.
If you like it, buy it. If someone says you are weird, be proud! I have been called worse...
As a designer I have seen these used before many times.:)
No that would not be weird, it would be very clever, very country cottage. I like it.
my SIL has one with a marble top forher phone.
Nothing weird about it at all!!! Go for it!!!
Its not weird if you love it.
