Yesterday, I drove past an antique store. Out front they had old Singer treadle legs. There is no machine or cabinet - just the bottom part with the foot pedal and the side legs.

Would it be weird to buy this and make a table or something from it? Or an old fashioned cabinet (that looks like a sewing machine cabinet) to hold supplies?

One set actually is only the sides legs, without the foot pedal or wheel. Would it be weird to buy these and make a desk of it?

People have purchased odder things.

Buy them and enjoy. I think the desk would be lovely.

In a new york min! I love salvaging old things with new uses!! have fun and take a pic when your done creating your new/old cabinet!!

Rose L 04-27-2011 11:12 AM

Not weird in my opinion. I used to have a set of legs that we put a counter top on. I used it in my kitchen as an island. I have a couple of old treadle machines and often consider tearing them down for the legs so I can make some cute sewing tables out of them. I would go for the one with the actual treadle on it!

cowgirlquilter 04-27-2011 11:14 AM

I think that is a GREAT idea. How neat-one of a kind, yayyyyyy!

charismah 04-27-2011 11:17 AM

ptquilts 04-27-2011 11:19 AM

Jammin' Jane 04-27-2011 11:20 AM

Painiacs 04-27-2011 11:29 AM

ohiobuckeye 04-27-2011 11:33 AM

julia58 04-27-2011 11:50 AM

I think I hear it calling your name. "Come back and get me PLEASE"

Dragonfly Nana 04-27-2011 11:52 AM

someone recently showed a pic on here of one that had a top made from rulers/yardsticks and the legs were from a treadle.
It was beautiful.

I have a table at the far end of my dining room made out of the metal legs/treadle parts with an old board on top. I put it together almost 30 years ago and have had more compliments on it than anything else in our home. People just love it. It sometimes has a carved wooden lamp on it, sometimes a small Christmas tree., and other times I decorate it with other things.
Another item we get lots of compliments on is our coffee table. It's the wooden part of an old treadle. No I didn't dismantle the two pieces. My husband bought the wooden top for $5.00 years ago at a garage sale. The metal treadle legs were all that was left of my great grandmother's treadle machine after my father took it out of the attic and dumped it out back of the barn without my mothers's knowledge. I salvaged it years later for my end table.
So go for it if you want, you won't be the first person to have done it.
Kat

I have two. They each have a granite top but, once I get moved, I will combine them with a larger top for a dining room table.

mosquitosewgirl 04-27-2011 12:32 PM

not weird at all!

pocoellie 04-27-2011 12:32 PM

I think it would be fine to make whatever you want out of it. Not weird at all.

Mariposa 04-27-2011 12:33 PM

Go for it! :)

Lori S 04-27-2011 12:34 PM

I saw a set of legs re-purposed with a marble top , it was spectacular!

DA Mayer 04-27-2011 12:37 PM

People in our family have done that and we really enjoy the end product

LoriEl 04-27-2011 12:56 PM

My dad did that once and I liked it so much he found the "feet" for me. They are still in my cellar. Maybe someday!

TonnieLoree 04-27-2011 02:06 PM

Terrific idea! Go get it! It needs your home and TLC. :-)

jljack 04-27-2011 02:09 PM

Recently someone posted a picture of a small table they made with just the side legs of a treadle to hold their Featherweight while they are using it. It was adorable!!! I thought it was very clever, and I would do it if I could find the legs!!!

pab58 04-27-2011 02:30 PM

A friend of my step-father's made a table for me using the two side legs I found in my late MIL's basement. I absolutely love it! It's the perfect height for a side table, and I used it next to my sofa (the arms of the sofa are pretty high) when I lived in an apartment. He even put a shelf under the top. It's currently in my bedroom and has my DVD player and cable box sitting on it.

The antique stores around here have all re-purposed them into anything from an ordinary side table to a lathe. If you like it, buy it!

CoventryUK 04-27-2011 02:36 PM

I have had one displayed in my garden for several years! I grow a clematis plant through it!! Gets lots of compliments!!

sewwhat85 04-27-2011 02:47 PM

i have a table on my front porch made from sewing machine legs

Carron 04-27-2011 03:09 PM

I think it would make for a very nice addition in your home.

mamaw 04-27-2011 04:41 PM

My friend's husband made her a small island for her kitchen out of one and a cutting board table out of the other. They look lovely in her home.

MommaDorian 04-27-2011 04:43 PM

I think it's a great idea!!

the casual quilter 04-27-2011 04:59 PM

It would make a cool table. I wouldn't hesitate.

running1 04-27-2011 05:01 PM

It would be adorable!! There is a quilt shop in Springfield, MO with an attached tea room... all the tables have old treadles for bases. Very cute... food was great and the shop is wonderful, too!!!

Quiltforme 04-27-2011 05:21 PM

A lady that donated a bunch of fabric had made a dining room table out of the bottom and it was amazing! Why not use it for something so they don't get forgotten!

Jeanniejo 04-27-2011 05:24 PM

I know 3 people that have the machine bottom and a granite top. They are gorgeous!! They got the granite really cheap at salvage yards.

I don't think it would be weird at all. This is one I have in my kitchen (never mind the Easter stuff still on it, tho). I love the way someone took it and salvaged it. Bought it at my friends little boutique a few years ago. Good luck!

quiltgrammyt2 04-27-2011 05:57 PM

I would go for it, I think they make great looking tables!

I am typing this very response on my laptop which is sitting on *my* treadle table in my living room!

I bought mine at a flea market along the river Main in Frankfurt, Germany, 40 years ago. Some little Italian guys wanted the machine, I only wanted the base at the time, now I kick myself! It was much too heavy for me to take home alone, so the gorgeous blonde Viking man selling it, put it and me in his little VW and took it home for me! Sometimes I display my pretty dome-topped wooden boxed Singer hand crank machine on it.

No, I've seen them turned into tables. Saw one with a lamp attached to it. CUTE!!!!!!

cindy4857 04-27-2011 06:56 PM

I have one I salvaged and an old piece of marble I found so I'm putting 2 and 2 together to make a table

Not weird at all.

2000HD 04-27-2011 07:08 PM

Last winter at a craft fair I seen a bunch of tables made like that a guy was selling. He sandblast the legs and paints them black and puts a flat top on them.

Krystyna 04-28-2011 02:43 AM

Not at all. I go to a lot of estate sales and have seen beautiful tables and sideboards made using these -- and I'm talking about upscale homes.
