Beth33 08-28-2011 07:31 AM

Bought fabric online, not really the color I wanted for project.

So... what would you do with 1 yard of orphan fabric?

Any suggestions?
Thanks

Jim 08-28-2011 07:33 AM

add it to my stash....I'd have a use for it someday

grammy Dwynn 08-28-2011 07:38 AM

Color matching is one of the reasons I do not purchase on-line, plus I am a touchy-feely shopper. ;)

Put it in your stash . . . then one day it will the PERFECT fabric for another project.

susie-susie-susie 08-28-2011 07:39 AM

I would add it to my stash. Something will come along that it will be perfect for.

I read on here to cut up 1 yrd of fabric into 5 in. charm squares, you get 56....., then add different colors and use the lil twister????? just a thought

Vanessa17 08-28-2011 07:46 AM

make a bag?

maine ladybug 08-28-2011 07:56 AM

I would probably end up using it in a charity project.

back it with a heavier fabric and make a couple tote bags.

Or a pillowcase to add to a charities stash.

auntpiggylpn 08-28-2011 08:15 AM

Swap with someone here on the board!!!!

MoanaWahine 08-28-2011 08:19 AM

Another thought is to back it with a coordinating fabric. Top stitch the edges and then use it to wrap gifts for family members. I use a hair binder to hold all the corners together and then take the extra fabric from the gathering to make a nice little bow by tucking in the corners to the hair binder. That is if you do not want to make something with it :D

crafty pat 08-28-2011 08:47 AM

I would put it aside until I found a pattern or other fabric I could use with it.

Holice 08-28-2011 09:14 AM

Depending on the pattern.....i would back and batt it; quilt length about every 4.5", bind it and give it to the hospital or nursing home or wherever it might be appropriate If it doesn't work now it probably won't work for you in the future.

quilter1430 08-28-2011 09:21 AM

Just hang onto it ... eventually you'll find use for it.

eparys 08-28-2011 09:32 AM

Save it in the stash - you never know when it will be just what you need!

mom-6 08-28-2011 09:36 AM

One yard lengths is what composes a big part of my stash. Or maybe I should say that's the size I buy and the leftovers are my stash. When trying to get just the right fabric to go with a particular focus fabric I may end up getting two or three (thinking they are ok) and then see another that is truly exactly right. And a few months later those first ones are just what's needed for something else (and may no longer be available in my local shop).

So welcome to stash building! It will be perfect for some project in the future.

loves_2_quilt 08-28-2011 10:29 AM

Try Bonnie Hunter's method. If it is ulgy cut it into small pieces, it changes the "look". http://quiltville.com/

Tartan 08-28-2011 10:37 AM

I would look in my stash to see if I had a couple of matching fabrics to make a D9P or add it to my stash. You could also treat yourself to a small project ...apron, pot holders, thread catcher, pin cushion, cover for your machine, snap bags,....something that is quick and cute.

sewnsewer2 08-28-2011 10:40 AM

Make a purse, cut it into fats or make some cosmetic bags with it.

Ed 08-29-2011 03:11 AM

I would add it to my stash. Or cut it up for binding.

What he said :-)

Steady Stiching 08-29-2011 04:16 AM

Pillowcases....its always nice to have a ready made gift on hand.

Homemother 08-29-2011 05:40 AM

Interesting question. I had orphan fabric purchased on line like you did. I used a practice project and it came to life and found a home! Another piece I used as a back and it also came to life!

joyce888 08-29-2011 05:44 AM

I've used pieces that I didn't like to make sample blocks or let DGD have it. Used a "what was I thinking" piece one time for a sample block and it turned out of be gorgeous!

magpiefeather 08-29-2011 05:47 AM

Add contrasting borders and make one like this beauty!

Tudey 08-29-2011 06:13 AM

I would keep it for Binding something

Can you show a picture of the fabric?

Quiltlady330 08-29-2011 06:25 AM

That's how stashes are born. :D

Linsoblu 08-29-2011 06:44 AM

Find it some friends and make a quilt

Ann912 08-29-2011 08:01 AM

Another quilter you know may love it and would trade with you.

wendiq 08-29-2011 08:20 AM

Yup! Stash it......I've found many "ugly" pieces of fabric that perfectly fit at times......from my stash. Or you could use it as a backing or may mug rugs or.....etc., etc., etc.

sandwich child 08-29-2011 10:04 AM

I was given 2 FQ, so I made an apron using a QAYG log cabin pattern for the top and the 2nd FQ was just large enough for the skirt.

Bren 08-29-2011 10:59 AM

Agree with all the other stash builders.

Old hen 08-29-2011 12:51 PM

Good thing I don't have to have a project for every "extra" yard of fabric that I have in my house!

SeamRipper 08-29-2011 12:57 PM

One yard is perfect for a car/airplane-sized lap blanket! Just get a flannel to put on the back (prewash), sew it together and knot every so often to hold it all together. Perfect gift for a traveler. It rolls up nice and small and you can tie it shut with a ribbon.
Idea # 2 (and it may already be mentioned) If it is a kid-friendly print do as above and donate it to Project Linus.
Idea #3 (Sorry, the ideas are flowing!) Make a pillowcase for ConKerr Cancer. They have the pattern on their website with ydg requirements.
Have fun with it!

Buckeye Rose 08-29-2011 12:58 PM

That is why I don't buy fabric online. You can't see the actual shade or feel the fabric beforehand. I would see if you had something to pair it with and make 9 patches that you can alternate with solid blocks.

IBQUILTIN 08-29-2011 01:00 PM

Add it to your stash, it will be just the perfect piece for something in your future. And have fun

Johanna Fritz 08-29-2011 01:01 PM

Use for mug rug or pin cushion

joy 08-29-2011 01:56 PM

Make an apron... it only takes 1 metre... turn it on point and fold the top point down about 8 inches.... and back it with another or else you can use it as a backing for one that is to your liking.

luce321 08-29-2011 03:58 PM

Just put it in your stash, in time you will find a use for it.

MargeD 08-29-2011 04:46 PM

Keep it and let it age, like fine wine, and then it will be there for that special project and it will be the perfect fabric.
