I think I'd use black, if you want to use the same thread for all of them. JMHO In the end, it's your decision.

I've used varigated thread with a medium satin stitch and found that it really added to the "happy look".
That quilt will be awesome no matter what thread you use!! You did a great job with your selection of colors. |

I think I would do all the wheels in black and then pick one color for each block for all but the wheels. Orange or brown for some, maybe red or blue for others.
