My neighbor heard that I was interested in old sewing machines. She said her aunt had one did not know what kind. Later she called and said that it was "just an old singer table top model". I told her to find out more, I'm hoping it is an old feather weight and she doesn't want too much. My husband said you have 2 sewing machines now why do you need another one? Bless his heart he just doesn't understand.

LOL..had to laugh..when we moved to our Condo..my hubby(who has always supported my quilting) helped the day the sewing room was being loaded..he said you have enough fabric to make 50 quilts and why do you have 3 sewing machines..I said there are 6 and that's my stash !!! The look on his face was priceless !!

sahm4605 07-11-2011 10:29 AM

They just don't get it. But most of them have more than one tool or golf club or camera or whatever. Hope it's a FW.

Painiacs 07-11-2011 10:55 AM

All the machines and I keep saying y!!!

jmabby 07-11-2011 11:01 AM

Does he have more than 2 fishing poles, guns, cars, golf clubs, or whatever? We can enjoy our hobbies too.

AngieS 07-11-2011 11:02 AM

OH, I hope it's one too!! :)

romanojg 07-11-2011 11:25 AM

Men are like boys; you have to get on thier level. I tell mine why do you need another gun each year; you can only shoot one at a time. He shuts up and realizes he's fighting a losing battle.

Tell him it's for the same reason that he has more than one wrench or more than one screwdriver. They all do different things and each works best to do its own thing.....

Maia B 07-11-2011 12:02 PM

Ha! Wait until mine gets back from Africa to find a quilt frame in the living room!

Kehoeta 07-11-2011 01:05 PM

I have 3 machines right now... And I used that argument about the right tool... I can't tell you how many times my husband has quoted..."See how well the job goes when you have the right tools?"

Man - I love throwing that back at him. :)

blueangel 07-11-2011 01:38 PM

Awesome

That's what I was going to say. Tell him to just think of it as another tool, or whatever it is that he 'collects'!

fabric_fancy 07-11-2011 03:09 PM

my DH gave up when i had 4 machines - now i'm at 9 and he just doesn't even ask any longer.

Good for you, hope it's a reasonably priced Featherweight. Please let us know how it turns out.

4EVERquilt 07-11-2011 08:43 PM

Bless his heart is right!!

dreamboat 07-11-2011 08:49 PM

Best thing to do is not have a husband. I have a live in boyfriend for 28yrs. No strings attached. We both do what ever we want. So I have 11+ sewing machines.

I hope it is a featherweight too. Please let us know and post pics. As for Husbands---thanks to everyone for the responses---I never would have thought of some of them, but they are so very true. Mine is golf clubs, and video games.
I especially like the "right tool" Thanks ladies. Hey Jim, you are different, you are one of us remember?

That makes me smile :)

deedum 07-12-2011 03:36 AM

I am at 6 and looking at buying another :)

Dotsie 07-12-2011 03:36 AM

How many tools has he?

janekonowitz 07-12-2011 03:39 AM

My husband is wonderful! He buys my machines, he came home with a Bernina 630 a few years ago, and then an 830 when we went to a quilt show. I have 2 featherweights if anyone is interested.

Tinabodina 07-12-2011 03:41 AM

When my DH starts with those silly statements, I just ask him how many tools he has and why would he want more????

jitkaau 07-12-2011 03:52 AM

People who sit their machines in cupboards for 99% of the time don't understand either...

kwheeler 07-12-2011 03:54 AM

Oh! I do hope it is a FW. My family got me a FW for my birthday and I was overwhelmed. They also got me a treadle machine which I just love to use. It quilts so nice. I hope so much that the machine will be a FW. God bless you.

sewtruterry 07-12-2011 03:59 AM

A while back I had the opportunity to add to my"collection" with another treadle that someone was going to give me, I asked my husband if he thought we had enough room for it and he said and I quote "do you want the real answer or the husband answer?" I said both. The first thing he said was "we would be crazy not to take it." (that was the real answer) and then he said "Anything you want dear" (that was the husband answer). That machine made number 11 for me including another treadle, a featherweight, one from the 50's in a cabinet, a mid arm with 10' frame,2 sergers, 2 embroidery machines, the first machine I ever bought that is now a boat anchor as it was caught in a flood and does not work, and the first new machine I ever bought when the boat anchor could no longer do its job. And yes technically they all work or have a job including the boat anchor, when not a boat anchor it is a door stop, or paper weight, or fabric weight, whatever job it needs to do at the time.

Selena 07-12-2011 04:31 AM

I told my husband that when I set up shop I have to have more than one machine set up and started explaining the use of each one. He stared at me like I was speaking in another language. I already own the machines and he keeps asking how many I have and why but he still doesn't get it. He really doesn't know how many I own.

I use 4 machines, the last one I bought (for me) was my FW earlier this year, and Sunday bought a FW for DH.

Roberta 07-12-2011 04:50 AM

My DH has become addicted to trying to find Featherweights at antique stores and yard sales. He's now worse then I am.

grumpy90650 07-12-2011 04:51 AM

my hubby is the greatest...at the moment i am 'reorganizing' my stash, and i have piles everywhere in the house, mainly in the living room, and he just walks around the piles and smiles...and asks 'when will my quilt be done"!!!! he is so cute

galynn 07-12-2011 05:10 AM

LOL, isn't that the way it is when someone does not have the same passion. I have 2 machines and an 18 inch longarm with 14 foot bed. My DH does understand my passion and built a studio for me to work in. Then again I never say anything about all his new guns (several a year), or any of his wood shop equipment. I have my eye on an embroidery machine, maybe someday. Even if that machine is not a feather weight, get it, those old singers are great to have and to look at.
