I use the top of a dresser. When it wasn't big enough to take a 36 inch cutting pad, I added a piece of 1/4 inch board on top of it and it has worked out great.

To Midwestmary, I love your snowman quilt.

I sew on an 8' folding table which is not as high as a dining table and usually, unless it is something very intricate, I sit and cut next to my machine. I only do a couple of layers at a time and it works well. If it's a big project, I clear the table but still try to sit and cut. Since I usually design a lot of my quilts, I cut as I go a lot of times. Hope this helps.

Because of the table supports, the PVC pipes hold it up. You determine what height you need and get the pipes cut to size.
Hard to describe w/o a drawing;just take a look at how your folding table is constructed. |
I also used some hard cover books that I had. Then I could adjust the height better.

I have a friend who has a bar stool that has a back. Her husband cut it to the height she can use. She said help..I have heard many quilters say that a break is good and stretching is very important. Remember that they say that we need to move our fingers also.

I use my kitchen counter because it is 36 inches high. I have had
back surgery, so I can't use anything lower or I'm in trouble. |
I am new to quilting as well. I just put the mat on the floor and cut. I do have a folding table for my sewing machine, just purchased a used folding sewing machine table. I think that would be easier for me to cut on or sew on. Best of luck and happy quilting!!

Hello - greetings from England. Try working at the kitchen worktop (don't you call it a counter?). Mine is higher than the table and quite comfortable to use.

I have back problems so know what you are talking about. I ended up putting the table I use to cut up on bricks. It really works. Before I did this I also had to take alot of breaks. they also sell tables with adjustable legs. Got mine at Sams club. The only problem I found with those is to me they aren't wide enough
