I like the 10.00 a hem answer the best. That will stop them everytime.

I think you handled that very well. Good for you.

If it was a very good friend I would probably do a hem. For other things I just say I can't remember how to do that kind of sewing any more and then I refer them to a gal that does alterations.

I am a sewer as well as a quilter. I have made and sold many purses and tote bags; mostly by word of mouth-people seeing one I've made and asking me to make one for them. It finally got to the point that I had no time for quilting so I now say that I only sew for myself.

I, only, sew or mend for relatives. It doesn't bother me to say an emphatic "NO!" I work and would rather spend my time quilting. However, I was asked to make a quilt. Told them it would be at least $300. Word must have gotten around because I was never asked by anyone again. (LOL)

Sounds like you handled it perfectly.

I had a similar situation. A neighbor asked me to make a dress for her. Good grief! At the time I had 5 little girls and all that goes along with them....! I didn't have time to MAKE a dress for a neighbor...but I thought if I told her I would show her how to make the dress then she could sew for her children and herself whenever...ya know the story...teach a man to fish and he'll not go hungry, give a man a fish and he'll starve! Anyway, she wouldn't do it...she didn't want to learn. Too bad! So now...she's running around naked! lol

Neighbor asked me to hem up 4 pairs of pants for her. I told her that I would be glad to TEACH her how to hem them. She thought about that for a day and then asked me if there was something that she could use that she could iron up her hems so she would not have to touch a needle and thread.

I gave her my JoAnn's coupon and told her that she could find something like that at Joann Fabrics.

I haven't heard if she has them done yet or not.

At up to an hour per pair of pants, I could get a lot of quilting done in that amount of time.

What would you have done, or said?

The same as you!

I just told my husband the other day that I quilt, I don't sew, darn, or mend!!!

I have a lady that thinks i should hem her pants too so i told her $5 per pair and she said that is fine, I have hemmed quite a few pairs for her and her daughter. Might as well make a buck.
