I am soooooo mad at myself
I had to refigure a throw pattern to make it a queen. I needed to have 60 1/2 sq triangles so I would have to cut 30 squares....not me I cut 60 squares of them not only to one fabric but with 2, any ideas on what to make with the extras, they are 6 7/8 squares. Not only am I upset over that but I could have gotten away with alot less fabric. I could have used that $ towards fabric for another project !!!
dont you just hate it when that happens?
Make another quilt with the pieces.
could you use them in a border?
I agree with bearisgray. Sew the pieces together like you did with the first quilt. Then lay out the squares in a totally different layout. Have fun with the layout and see what you come up with. You will be getting two quilts that way :o
I say just keep sewing them together like you are already doing and you will get a second quilt or a backing that is the same as the front.
Maybe you could make some throw pillows or a coordinating wall hanging to go with the quilt.
i'm sure we've all been there. there are so many wonderful patterns that use hst's. keep browsing the pics here and on the net for the one pattern that will fit your fabric/colors.
Opps! We have all been there. They will make a beautiful quilt so there will be not loss.
Use them for the backing.
Maybe God was trying to tell you there is someone out there who needs a quilt. Just think about all the folks who lost everything in the recent tornados. Maybe your supposed to bless someone with your "leftovers".
The second quilt will find it's place in your heart and a home somewhere to boot.
I'd make a second quilt! :)
pillow shams, gifts
You could make the same blocks, lay them in a different pattern and use them for the back, Have a reversible quilt.
Good luck |
Are they the right size to cut into strips for a piano key border for your quilt?
Welcome to my world! Just ended up making 4 more blocks for a quilt than I needed to AFTER going out to buy more fabric for it that I didn't need! GRRRR!
I think you should make a charity quilt!

I'd be looking thru my "1001 Patchwork Designs" book for another pattern for using the others. |
make a different design out of them. Do you have a design wall? There's lots you can do with 1/2 square triangles, good luck

You could practice 1/2 & 1/4 st and use them for a new original design. Just have fun and enjoy.
I would make pillow shams.
Start playing with the HSTs. There are a lot of blocks that use them. You could make a sampler quilt of all kinds of blocks or find one you like and make a quilt of them. There may be 2 that look great together and make a secondary design. Remember that they have to have the same # of components to blend together the best. (ie. 3x3, 4x4 etc.). If you want to keep it simple do a pinwheel quilt.
Been there done that, keep the extras for inspiration and look for a quilt pattern to incorporate SOME of the pieces into, and save the rest for a scrappy quilt. My guess is if you liked the fabric enough on the first go round, you will still like it in other projects. You can also use some of it for a summertime bed runner when you wouldnt normally use a quilt!:)
They are always good for a second of the same or to incorporate into another project
I learned too! Made DGS a quilt. way overcut the strips so SIL got the same fabric strips sewn into blocks AND I still enough left over for the dog to get a bed cover too!
I have done that before and used the extra pieces in the backing. It's very attractive and special!
I did the same thing with some 30's prints. So aggravating! I've just set them aside for now and know at some point I'll run across a project that needs them.
Why not make a smaller quilt version - put a solid coordinating border around it & use it for the back of your quilt OR
Make them into larger blocks - use a corrdinating fabric - sew them together for your quilt back Good luck |
Well, I definitely feel your pain! Lots of good suggestions here, though. Now, I don't feel so alone with all my mistakes!
Piece the border. That always looks cool.

Carpenter's Wheel will use up some. A wide ribbon border for the CW would use more. Check the borders on quilterscache. I might trim the ones for the border down a bit, but not too much.
Better to have too many than not enough! I would make another quilt in a different pattern, too. Lots of possibilities with large squares.
Maybe you could sell the extras on this board and use the money to buy something you want. I'm sure a lot of us would enjoy the pre-cut squares. Just post a picture in the Items For Sale or Trade forum and then stand back as the offers come in.
How about making a pieced back for your quilt? My DH always says the back is another opportunity to make a beautiful quilt.
Make another quilt.
Is there a place to TRADe things here on QB?
