I am trying to NOT add to my growing stash of fabric...... but.... I found an ad on Criag's List for a quilter's/sewer's sale in Columbus today and tomorrow. She is having it at a church, and selling:
"Fabric, Fabric and Lots of more Fabric. Singer Fabric Presser Books, Threads, Patterns, Notions. Brother Sewing Machine Quilting, Craft and Knitting Tools. Upholstery, Knits & Drape Material. Private Quilter's Stash is being liquidated. ***** BARGAINS GALORE ***** " OH..... how I would love to go and buy, buy, buy!!!!! But so far I am resisting. It would be about an hour drive for me to get there, about 50 miles each way. That would be a lot of gas burned in my gas guzzler. And then WHO KNOWS how much money I would spend once I got there! Oh, yeah.... I REALLY do NOT need any more fabric! I have enough to last my whole lifetime! But OH, .... it is SO tempting! Maybe tomorrow! But by then, the best stuff will be gone! What to do!!!!!????? |
Have you left yet? :D:D:D
LOL. Who doesn't love a bargain? But if you already have a decent stash, and it's that far away, which means a lot of gas like you said, maybe it's better left alone. Just pretend all the fabric is older and not in style right now.
Did that help? |
safe travels... :-P
Why can't I find sales like that around me, lol. The one ad I followed up on turned out to be a bin of the cheapest, nastiest fabric imaginable. I can't even begin to think of a store that would have sold it :?
Ask yourself is a bargain a bargain if you are not going to use it and will end up selling it yourself on Craigslist in a few years. If you have plenty of disposable money and find something you will USE NOW, have a great time.
Quilt instead of shop!
I agree with seamsto me. Why buy fabric you won't use, don't like, and maybe don't have the money for just because it is a bargain and you get caught up in the moment.
Wait and buy something you really want and need. |
I agree too, I have found a lot of those sales are fabrics that have been in someone else's house for 10+ years and are older, thinner styles that I really wouldn't use. People that spent $10/yard on newer styles don't sell off like that. (Well maybe they will in 10 years, but not yet anyway!!) Plus it sounds like you already have a decent stash, so no matter the price having more fabric than you know what to do with will only put you in the same position as this woman 10 years from now, except you'll be trying to sell 20 year old fabric then.
I vote, stay home and dig into your stash and quilt quilt quilt. If that doesn't sound appealing, reorganize the fabrics you do have. Pulling them all out and refolding them all will surely put a damper on the want to buy more! Cheers! Rachel |

Maybe it's from KatieD on this board who asked opinions on how to sell her really big fabric stash, without needing to ship to the hundreds of people on this board because she needs to clear it out rather quickly.
She is in Ohio, but I don't know more than that. If that is the case, I believe she said she had a 20 x 20 room full of good, LQS fabrics. |
So, what'd ya get?
Thanks for all of your "sensible" replies! I probably won't go, but it is still hard to resist!
are you going? you will be mad at yourself if you don't go early

I would go, charging the gas money to entertainment!
I agree with Prism 99. You may get there and decide not to buy anything, but isn't browsing through fabric one of life's greatest pleasures? Go for the entertainment value, if nothing else!
Send pictures when you get back. I know I could never pass up something like that in a million years.
I vote go! you will have fun just looking. I actually like some of the older prints myself. It will be a nice ride if nothing else. What have you got to lose?

Heck- I'd be warming up the car & packing a lunch!! That poor soul might be in dire need of cash, not to mention all that material that needs a warm loving home! :)
GO and have fun! Life is short! Enjoy the hour drive, anticipation is half the fun! Doesn't mean you have to buy everything! Just enjoy, then let us know, so we can enjoy :)
Yeah post pictures so I can drool!!!

Mmmmmmm....thinking I better check CL. No...better not, or will find a reason why I "need" to make a trip to Columbus.Feeling very virtuous

If I only knew, I was in Columbus at Quilt Trends the last to days. But now home, 3 hours away!
As "they",don't let the kitchen door hit you on the way out to the car....and good luck on controlling the buying urge.

Oh man, I wish I still lived there. Hope you have fun!
I agree with the stay home & quilt group. why spend the gas money on possibly 'not wonderful fabric'?
Go,go,go and make something pretty and show it to us!!!!Enjoy yourself!!
I would take a ride to it. Just think it is a Sunday fall ride to see the scenery too. But we no it is to see the fabric. I wish I lived closer I would go.

Hold yourself back and use what you have first.
Fabric is not apt to get any cheaper so grab what you can when you can. You will be a winner in the long run!
i would be standing at the door waiting for the sale to start !!!

JoAnn's or Wal-mart sells fabric like that! Yuck! |
Well, I did not go. I was just afraid that the fabric would be either cheap junky stuff, or nice $10.00/yard fabric that they were selling for $8.00/yard.
If I knew it was going to be nice $10.00/yard fabric that they were selling for $1.00 or $2.00 /yard I would have gone. But the thing that scared me off was the day before, I had gone to a garage sale (only 8 miles away) that had advertised they had "quilting fabric" and all they had were baggies of scraps of junky, old fabric that were not even cottons. The only "lengths" of fabric they had were old upholstery fabric. I decided that I did not want to drive all the way to Columbus and be that disappointed again. Oh well, maybe next time. Did anyone else from here go? How was it? |
I'm glad you resisted the temptation to go. A bargin isn't a bargin if you don' need what you are buying. Now if you were making dog throws.. and it didn't matter what the quality of the fabric was... and you could get even yucky fabric for cheap.. that would have been a different story all together... LOL

I do watch coupons and sales. Today I went to local JoAnn's with my 50% off coupon and bought 10.12 yards of warm and natural with a savings of $55.64. Plus they gave me in house coupons for October 17 to the 23rd.
