How about one like this? It's fairly easy to make and you could alternate red and black squares.

Log cabins in light and dark halves. Or how about 10 minute blocks in opposite variations.

I would tell her a two color quilt of colors without contrast will not show the pattern unless a third contrasting color is added. It will be dark with no definition of pattern. If she knows nothing of quilting she should know enough to trust your suggestion. I don't know how creative you can be with two dark fabrics.

Just a curious question: Was your daughter always interested in the things you were making? It was nice of her to buy you fabric for Christmas, but I would have been taken back a bit when she wanted you to use it to make her a quilt seeing as she has never been interested in sewing. I like some of the suggestions others have made and there are books out there for 2 color quilts. Hope you don't take offense to my question.

You could do a twister starting with a simple checkerboard then recutting with the twister tool.

20 fat quarters work quite well for - Turning 20- quilts- since they use... 20 fat quarters. there are a variety of them now- a book called 'more turning 20' they are fairly easy patterns with no waste- a good choice for a fat quarter bundle with 20 fq's.
