I'm near Medford, and most of the gals there are generous, too. I know that sometimes, with the way the fabric is arranged on the bolt, what looks like 1 yard, really isn't. I've been shorted many times because the fabric was folded a bit at an angle on the bolt. I'm glad they are careful to add that little extra so that if the material is a little off-grain, I still end up with what I asked for. I don't think they are being cheated at all. When I used to make so many clothes, I always had to order an extra 1/4 yard at most fabric stores to be sure.

Oh good grief!

The store manager does not want cut fabric returned because it was crooked and cheated the customer out of the amount she paid for. The extra inches is far cheaper to give then have cut fabric returned or complaints sent to the main office about being cheated on cut fabric. I was told the general rule was to cut at least 1 inch more and give the last quarter yard on the bolt as extra.

I agree. I agree..."good grief"... :)

I'm not THAT old (48) but I remember when I was younger that they would measure the fabric, put their thumb there and then move the fabric over an inch or two and then cut ...to make sure you had your yard. It's not "cheating the store"--it's plain old "good business" and making sure the customer is happy. Satisfied customers come back.

Some stores will give that last inch or so.

Some DON'T.

As long as I get "at least" as much as I asked for - I won't complain (much).

We are a funny bunch - we get lots "over" - do we tell the manager?

We get shorted 1/8 of an inch - and we get our undies in a bunch.

Can't fairly have it both ways, can we?

I just went to my walmart a few days ago and they are still not selling bolts and the lady said she hadn't heard anything about them bringing back bolts. I was so disappointed**

Problem with being shorted is sometimes that 1/8" that you asked for and paid for is the difference between finishing a project and going back for more fabric.

It's nice fabric - but you might want to check on the fiber content.

I was thinking the same thing. I bought some years ago for one of my first quilts and didn't know any better. The needle would hit it just wrong and cause it to run like pantyhose almost. Please double-check the fabric content or try a burn test on it.

What is the "burn test"? I inherited some fabric from my MIL and some are questionable whether they are 100% cotton. I can sometimes tell by the smell of them when they are ironed. The cotton/polyester blend material has a bad smell to it. I would love to know another method to tell the difference.

I just bought some fabric from my local Walmart yesterday and they measured the yard from inch one to inch 36 with maybe an additional 1/4 inch for unevenness. Nothing additional. You got a great gal who cut your fabric.
