I found a vintage machine today and could not walk away, she was pretty. I have no idea what it is but am guessing its a singer 99?? The case is in good shape, there are no attatchments at all, gonna have to find some, after I know what to look for, it runs, it has a shuttle type bobbin, but I will need extras, will need instructions, The part I don't like is the motor and light are not a match for the machine, would like to change them but don't know where to start. This was am impulse buy, whichn I never do but was $20.00 and I just couldn't leave without it. Some of you girls in the know will guild me I hope.

Wow, she is beautiful

quiltingcandy 09-17-2011 04:49 PM

Uh oh - now you have the fever! The first machine starts the fever. It looks beautiful, maybe buy a hand crank and remove the motor altogether.

annthreecats 09-17-2011 04:53 PM

Oh my, what a beauty. Hope you enjoy her.

DonnaC 09-17-2011 04:55 PM

Fantastic! I'm looking for one of those too!

mandyk 09-17-2011 04:55 PM

For that price you cannot go wrong!! Con grads.

blueangel 09-17-2011 05:01 PM

It's gorgeous

roseOfsharon 09-17-2011 05:03 PM

Lovely machine! I have one as well... my case top was damaged in mailing at the handle, but otherwise she is a beauty too!

vintagemotif 09-17-2011 05:10 PM

Congrats!! Your machine isn't a Singer 99, but either a Singer 127 or 128. If your bed is full size, 14-15 inch, then you have the 127. IF your bed is smaller, 12-13 inch, then you have a 128.

Enjoy! And please post your first project at the quilts made with vintage machines thread. Looking forward to seeing your first project!

amandasgramma 09-17-2011 05:11 PM

OH OH -- stay away -- stay FAAAAR away from me!!! I don't want to catch it -- NO room here for them!

Love the machine --- LUCKY you!!!! Congrats!

Beautiful machine and case, I think this is the first post of a case like that. Good luck and enjoy.

Scakes 09-17-2011 05:17 PM

Congratulations on your great find. Have fun with it.

fatquarters 09-17-2011 05:17 PM

Thanks vintagemotif.
The machine is 12 but the case is 17, so that's a 128?? What would the experts do with this, I kinda want it to be electric instead of crank, was it originally a crank. can I change the different motor and light . This one just is off to me.

fatquarters congratulations on your purchase. i just bought my first vintage singer this week also. mine is a model 128. i have to learn about this machine also. there is a vintage sewing machine thread on this board. the link is http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-43881-1.htm. i will participate as soon as i take my "josephine" in to have her serviced.

i bought it from a family whose grandmother owned it but had passed on and the mother nor daughter sewed. the seller held her for me as i musta been the first to call her. she said she had received a lot of calls for the machine. it was listed for $40 but she sold it to me for $20. "josey" needs some wires replaced and is missing the knee lever. the manual was in the sewing machine case but the paper being almost 100 years old, it is quite crumbly so i will order a manual online.

here is "josephine".

PATTIESPEARL 09-17-2011 05:26 PM

I have a 66 that looks just like that, but has a different carrying case. go by the serial number to find out what it really is.

Havplenty 09-17-2011 05:27 PM

the motor and wires on your machine look very new. no decals on the machine though. i wonder were they never there on that model or were removed when it was refurbished. either way it is a beauty.

deedum 09-17-2011 05:31 PM

Oh my! There is no going back now! YOur hooked!I know cuz I am hooked. Lovely machine, you did good!

frugalfabrics 09-17-2011 05:39 PM

she's a beauty!

jrharry 09-17-2011 05:44 PM

Congrats on your new vintage machine. I got the bug to and have purchased 8 machines since April. Its a lot of fun.

traumaRN 09-17-2011 05:59 PM

Be careful! Once you've caught the fever, it's like potato chips- one is never enough! But you've gotten off to a wonderful start. She is beautiful. Now you will have to name her!

You have LOTS of room!! Kick Bob out of his office!!

tammy cosper 09-17-2011 06:15 PM

You could take the motor and light off and convert it back to a treadle!

Oh josey is lovely. Nice decals. I am not sure , but I doubt decals were removed from mine. The serial # is

JC084782

is there somewhere I can find out what the original looked like?? I am a newbie when it comes to this.

jrharry, you got it bad! 8 machines!!!!! Oh help me!!

fatquarters 09-17-2011 06:19 PM

I wish I would have asked the lady I bought it from what her mothers name was so I could have named her after her previous owner. I'm I getting carried away, I would have to make a few phone calls to track this person down, who I do not know, she will think I'm nuts,
Oh, I think the fever is getting worse!!!!

Havplenty 09-17-2011 06:25 PM

what do you do with all of those machines? do you have some sort of museum or show room?

i named "josephine" after a generational family name. she has a new owner so she needed a new name.

go to the vintage machine thread and ask. just give them the serial number and someone will be able to give you the model number and date "born".

from what i understand after asking some ???'s after my purchase is that singer had that information posted on their website at one time but removed it. you can email singer and supply them the serial number and they can email it back to you.

i would try the vintage thread first to see if someone there can give you that info. once you get the model number you can google it and see what pics come back on your machine model.

Your 128 is a beauty, and the decals are there. She's a 1948 model. :)

The manual for her is here:
http://www.singerco.com/accessories/...manuals/search
Enter 128 in the search box and you'll be able to download a free manual.

fatquarters i was on a vintage singer machine website and saw this model 127 which yours look very close to.

what do you think? i think the second photo is much closer almost an exact match your "new" machine. maybe it is a model 128. you will not know for sure until someone can look up your serial number.

the website: http://www.sewnuts.com/centennial/class-cent.htm

SINGER 128-13 S/N JC367246 (1950) MADE IN CANADA AND THE SPOKED WHEEL (this looks closer to your model)

Here is a link on how to use your shuttle bobbin.

Mitch's mom 09-17-2011 07:40 PM

As unappealing as they are, the light and motor are Singer made parts. Instead of spending a bunch of money on replacements, get a rattle can of Krylon and paint them Gloss Black. Don't get paint in the motor - you'll have to cover the vent holes. If you know someone who does body work they could tape it off for you.

Singer 66 has a different bobbin and the area for putting the bobbin in looks different too.

Thanks for all the help so far. Those machines look like mine and mine could of been made in Canada as that's where I am

Yooper32 09-18-2011 02:50 AM

You lucked out, that machine looks to be in beautiful shape. Looks like it was always loved. I would not like the looks of that motor either, but painted black it probably wouldn't look so "off".

Annaleehunter 09-18-2011 04:05 AM

Oooohh! Beautiful. Personally, I would put it on a treadle cabinet and get rid of the motor.

DirtyPaw 09-18-2011 04:15 AM

Great buy.

Just-Lee 09-18-2011 04:19 AM

She's a beauty!

pineneedles4 09-18-2011 04:24 AM

There is a Siinger website where you can put in the serial number and it will tell you the model and the approx. year it was made.

Hancock's is now carrying the singer supplies such as the shuttle bobbins and such for the old machines!

I have one that looks similar to yours but it's 3/4 size and it has a hand crank rather than a motor to make it run!
