My husband lost his job in November, but he's retirement age, so it's working out and I still have a very good job, and we've paid off most of our bills and are preparing the house for my retirement. Then my badness hit.......I really feel awful, but I bought (financed) a Bernina 820 today! I love it, but why did I do this. I didn't need it....I have a Pfaff that I love, but I'm afraid if I don't get it now, I'll never have it! I'm conflicted, I want it but not sure I should keep it!!! Help, make me feel better!!!! Buyer's remorse sucks!
Like you said, "if not now, when".... You did the right thing and the little extra you pay on this each month can come from some creative grocery shopping. ;)
Awww, I hope you get over the guilt. Sounds like you know your financial situation and you're still working so it sounds good to me! :)

If your husband is retired and you are close to retirement and you both worked all your lives, then you deserve your own toys. My husband has his toys in restoring cars and shows them and he is a smoker and buys cartons of cigs each week therefore I don't have buyer's remorse on things that I want to have now while I am working and can pay for them. Lord knows the money will not be there when I retire. So, Go for it and while you are at it make sure you get all the attachments too! Tcharlie |
It actually sounds sensible to me because you're still working and can pay it off. I think it's a natural reaction to retiring, too. My DH is a year from early retirement. I've been wondering what things will be like when I'm still working and he's not! I have my eye on a Sweet Sixteen Sitdown system for someday...
Spending money on something you love is never a bad thing.
I have my eye on a sweet sixteen too, maybe for my birthday. |
Enjoy your 820. I retired about 2 years ago and just recently bought the 830. Didn't really need it but I plan on putting it to good use. DH is still working. Thought I had purchased all my toys before I retired but the 830 kept calling my name.

Who knows what the future holds? Just use it and enjoy it to the fullest. Congrats!
REmember, it is a Bernina. It will last you the rest of your life. I have a 440 QE, love it but wish I had the bigger throat. Just enjoy.
I did the same thig just before I retired in 06. I had dreamed of owning a Viking SE. My husband told me, If you want it you better be thinking of getting it now. And you had better buy all the goodies to go with it now too as we may not be able to later on. So I bit the bullet. I bought everything I wanted for it and I have never regreted it one little bit. Enjoy it...
Please don't let buyers remorse spoil your joy.
You are still working, pay on that baby and think of the years of enjoyment you will have with your Machine. :-D :-D |
With prices going up, you saved money buying that machine today. Tomorrow it will cost more. Happy Sewing ;)
When I lost my job I had my Viking 835 in lay away at Joanns. A friend gave money as a Christmas gift towards it. When I got my severence pay, I paid most of my bills off but kept money out to pay off my new machine and get it out of lay away. I did feel guilty, but thought, I worked for years and I want to spend a little money on myself. I love my machine and do not regret getting it.Intead of guilt feeling, just think of how many beautiful gifts you will be making on your new machine! Hugs!!!!
You did not do a bad thing. You are just having buyer's remorse. (I bet you have that after any large purchase.)
So, just use that machine, enjoy it, you deserve it. |
You did it, now enjoy it.
Good for you!!!!!!!!! We tend to neglect ourselves and take care of everyone else. You have worked all your life and it is time for you to "just do it". I'm proud of you. ENJOY IT!!!!!!!

You did not do anything wrong. We work all our lives and can't take it with us we leave. So you enjoy!
As you said, you are preparing the house for your retirement...this is for your retirement..
Life's too short. Enjoy.
As Sharon C said life is too short live and enjoy your new machine. If you have worked your entire life and not had any major purchases for just yourself you deserve it. I plan on buying stuff for myself whether I need it or not, I have to pay for it so I should be able to do what I want with my money. Have my eye on two FW's at the present. If I ever get my sewing room added to the house I plan on buying a long arm. If I had the money right now there was one advertised in Tioga, nD for 1500$. But I don't so couldn't buy it.
Congrats!
It's something you really wanted and you've worked hard for it. Consider it an early retirement gift. Enjoy it.
Life's too short, eat dessert first...or buy the machine you want and enjoy it while you can :!: :!: :!:
I always have buyer's remorse for about five minutesm, then I am fine. LOL. Enjoy your new toy.
Enjoy it. I tried to get everything fixed and paid off before I retired so that I could enjoy myself. You will be glad you did this.
Life is short, be creative and get it paid off and then you will be guilt free  :D:D:D
As long as you can afford the payment, you're ok :) I truely believe that after we've raised the kids, put them through college & head for our 'liesure years' we deserve to do something totally extravegant for ourselves (just as long as we aren't putting in financial jeapordy). I'm jealous... I wanna trade my Bernina up lol Love it!
Enjoy it. I can relate. The sewing machine lasts for many many years. Dont feel guilty if your DH approves. That should be all the convincing you need. I applaud you for taking the leap and Just Doing It.
The only bad thing in that scenario would be if you didn't use it and love every moment you spent playing on it. Think of it as a mental health tool.
RST |
You did a good thing for yourself. If you are getting to retirement age, you have worked all your life. You deserve a toy to use at your leisure and it's probably something you have wanted for a long time. Pay it off while you are working and know it will always be there for you to enjoy.
OK Tutt,
We all seem to agree you did something very good and actually probably more well thought out than you recognize. You can also say it is better than mental health therapy or medication. It will keep you happy and active as you find you have more time. What a wise investment. Don't know if this will help or not ... but ... one of our LQS's has very good sales at least twice a year. At that sale I usually buy a gift card. Yes, it is usually for $100 but when on sale I either get $120 on the card or pay $80 for it. Since I am going to want to buy fabric sometime anyway, I figure this is a great way to enjance my savings. That way I feel like I have double dipped as I usually buy material there using their 40% off coupons [and no it is a LQS, not Joanns.] Keeping involved in what you love to do is better than anything else you can do. ali |
Enjoy!
Tutt, if your husband is not going off to work every day, think of the money saved on gas for his transport to and from work - that'll pay for your new toy! Keep it and enjoy...we only go around once!
Yes, I did the same thing, but I was the one who got laid 0ff.
Better to do it now while you can pay for it than try to squeeze the money when it's tighter!
I look back over the things I have purchased thru the years when money was tight raising kids. I don't regret one thing since the items are still in use and much better quality than stuff today.

Like the girls said, enjoy it it will be payed off before
you know it.It just might be your last. Kittiebug |
I'm glad I'm not the only one who does things like that. Six weeks ago I walked into the Bernina dealer to buy a $2.00 item and saw a used 440QE calling my name. I've always wanted a Bernina. I certainly didn't need it. We've been struggling financially the last three years and even though it was a good price, it was still a lot of money. I did it anyway. I don't really regret it.
We all do this from time to time. My husband and father in law are ones who will buy on the spot so I keep my mouth shut on what I am interested in unless I really want to see it show up on the doorstep. For me this was a very conflicting thing. I was raised the daughter of a Pastor to a small church. We didn't have money to runout and buy. We grew up with enjoying looking at things and thinking 'someday' After a while that someday would come and we realized we didn't want it any longer. Sometimes our best choice is to make it a 'someday' so we we can really decide if that's worth it. Talk this over with your husband- we don't have to live with the situation but the 2 of you do.
