I've done the same thing, looked just fine with adding more binding using material that was used in the quilt. Go for it.

Yeah, "diagonally equidistant" were the words I was searching for in my post above, in case you couldn't see my hands describing it.

Nobody will notice. Just finish it the way you planned.

EdieClay 04-03-2011 09:54 AM

Great ending to your problem, but I loved the suggestions to just use a different fabric to complete the binding. I'll keep that suggestion in mind if I have the same problem one of these days.

katlady 04-03-2011 09:58 AM

That would be fine to have two different kinds of fabrics for binding.

I have used 'whatever' to finish the binding. Actually I divided it into two pieces and put around a couple of the corners. Gives it a little character and it is just as attractive either way.

Yippee! Solution solved with finding the fabric!! I have used scraps from the quilt for the binding before. Baby never complained!

grannypat7925 04-03-2011 11:54 AM

I do scrappy binding frequently and it seems to work very well. Always try to incorporate some of the same colors as in the quilt itself.

GramaLaura 04-03-2011 01:05 PM

I love mixing my binding colors :-D

SharonC 04-03-2011 01:06 PM

I think 1/2 and 1/2 would look great.

LindaaJR 04-03-2011 02:19 PM

I bet the baby will never know it was a goof if you do it that way. And mom will be so pleased you made the quilt for her baby and not care if she does know what happened. Take care.

I make scrappy bindings all the time & they look great. It will look like you planned it that way

Granny Coy 04-03-2011 06:07 PM

I'm glad you found the right fabric to complete the quilt the way you had envisioned it. I really hate having to "compromise" on anything when I have a certain vision in mind.

wraez 04-03-2011 07:09 PM

Yup it will work. I've done it on purpose and by mistake ... looked great both ways.

glenda5253 04-03-2011 07:31 PM

I like the idea of half and half.

KSue 04-03-2011 09:11 PM

Just use the other fabric - if they say anything tell them "Oh, it is supposed to be that way"

auntiehenno 04-04-2011 10:09 AM

Agree with you Jim, it will look fine!

I like pieced bindings, too. They add a new dimension to the finished quilt.

sylviasmom 04-04-2011 11:02 AM

I'm glad you found some fabric for the binding. I, usually in this same predicament will bind a baby quilt using whatever left over fabrics that are used in the quilt itself. Well, most patterns advise on how much fabric to buy for the binding, sometimes you have too much binding left over. But I do know, and someone can double check me, please, that from 5/8 yd you can get 7 yds of binding if cut on the bias. From 1/2 yd you can get 8 yds cut on the grain. Unfortunately, I need 9 1/2 yd. :).

Barbshobbies 04-05-2011 03:47 PM

You have half done, do the other half with different material that matches some other color in the quilt. Pretend that`s the pattern!

Baloonatic 04-06-2011 04:17 AM

Absolutely, piece that binding! Some of my cutest were made of many pieces

like this idea!

Arleners 04-23-2011 08:11 AM

I have tried this and it work good to stretch out your fabric. Just take your original binding strip off the quilt, cut it is half lengthwise and join the two lengths together. Adjust the widths of the two fabrics so that the total width equals your usual biding width.
