Bummer!!!! I'm working on a couple of baby quilts and had cut and made the binding a couple weeks ago. Well this afternoon I am sewing the binding on quilts 2 and 3 (#1 went off to Washington as a baby gift about a month ago) Anyway, got the binding on the second one and started sewing binding on third and it is not going to make it all the way around.!!! I know I should have measured before I stared sewing, I had even told myself that, but no...... I decided to just sew. I can make it 2/3's around. I'm thinking of stopping at half and then using another fabric to bind the other half. What do you think? I really don't want to have to unsew the half already sewn!!!!
So, it pays to measure first!!!!!

maryb119 04-02-2011 04:20 PM

I've done that and it looks fine. I have also used scraps of different lenghts to make the binding.

Fabaddict 04-02-2011 04:20 PM

go for it, will make it more interesting.

happyscrappy 04-02-2011 04:20 PM

i would just add on more binding where ever you ran out of binding with another fabric. i most always use different fabrics for my binding.

Vanuatu Jill 04-02-2011 04:21 PM

It would look nice if you could use the binding you have already on the top left and bottom right corners, centering both pieces evenly, and then filling in with a contrasting piece from the body of your quilt. It would look like it was planned that way. Just an idea!

mommamac 04-02-2011 04:22 PM

It will look like you planned it that way unless you point it out.

TonnieLoree 04-02-2011 04:24 PM

Lol, I've miscalculated before. If you don't have enough scraps to piece together enough for the binding, then I see nothing wrong with continuing in another fabric at a break point, such as a corner. I doubt the child will do much complaining.

Shelbie 04-02-2011 04:27 PM

The baby just won't care. Don't rip it off, just pick another fabric and continue. Quilt designer privilege.

darlin121 04-02-2011 04:29 PM

I try to be as forgiving on myself as possible when I do baby quilts. For some reason the smaller ones never turn out as well as the larger ones. Different colored bindings? Why not?!

redturtle 04-02-2011 04:52 PM

you are the only one who will know its not supposed to be that way...

baby sure wont know...

of course we do now that you told us lol

Jim's Gem 04-02-2011 04:59 PM

So, I'm searching all over for leftover fabric from those quilts. I know I have some......
Not sure where. I guess I was being too efficient and cleaned it all and put it away, where??????

Well, dinner time, then look some more. It's got to be here somewhere!!!!!

sueisallaboutquilts 04-02-2011 05:40 PM

I love pieced bindings. They add interest! :D

Jim's Gem 04-02-2011 05:58 PM

Happy Dance!!! I just found a 7 1/2 inch strip of the binding fabric!! I thought I had used it all up!!!! It was in my scrap drawer!!!! I had looked everywhere else except there for the fabric!!!!!

YEA!!!!
So now I will just make some more binding and finish it up and no one will know, not even me!!!!!

Vanuatu Jill 04-02-2011 06:01 PM

Wonderful!

grandma7 04-02-2011 06:06 PM

I've done it on purpose many times, using strips from what is left when the quilt is constructed. it will look great, as others have said, just like it was planned.

Jingle 04-02-2011 06:06 PM

Good for you to find more.

dunster 04-02-2011 06:09 PM

It will just add another interesting element to the quilt. Pretend that you planned it that way and you will look like a genius.

Rose_P 04-02-2011 06:09 PM

Glad to know you found it. If you still don't have enough perhaps you could post a picture and someone on the board will be able to match it.

MaRanda 04-02-2011 06:35 PM

Isn't it fun when you are looking for something you need and then all of a sudden you find it? I do that all the time!

Treasureit 04-02-2011 06:40 PM

You have a very good plan! Do it.

Dina 04-02-2011 07:23 PM

Happy ending!!

BETTY62 04-02-2011 09:48 PM

It will look fine with more than one color on the binding. It will be like you added your own special touch to the design.

Country1 04-02-2011 10:10 PM

I've done it 2. Just gives it more character!

justlooking 04-03-2011 02:59 AM

There are no hard fast rules! A matter of personal taste!

martyquilter 04-03-2011 03:49 AM

the different colors just gives the quilt more character!!!
I hate to do that... course silly me did it with the borders on my Mom's quilt.. took it to a retreat to get them on and drat it I didn't figure right size once I got all the blocks together...so now what to do... had to tear the 3 off & cut again as you know you can never get different blacks to match..... oh well.. measure SEVERAL times before sewing!!! lol....

jeannie t 04-03-2011 04:01 AM

Good deal on finding the scrap material. I usually find what I'm looking for after I don't need it. Won't be long now till the grand baby will make his arrival.

teacherbailey 04-03-2011 04:14 AM

I think scrappy binding makes quilts far more interesting! Anyway, if somebody asks-----of course you did it on purpose!

Iamquilter 04-03-2011 04:39 AM

I have done that also, use pieces from the front of the quilt and it will look like it was planned that way.

I like that--make it look like you planned it that way and keep that a secret--We won't tell!!

cjaye44 04-03-2011 05:06 AM

I've always liked the look of different fabrics joined for the binding. Gives the quilt a little extra pizzazz!!.

mimee4 04-03-2011 05:10 AM

Using different fabrics in the binding is fun. I sew all my leftover binding strips together to make binding for scrappy quilts. It fits right in.

KathyKat 04-03-2011 05:25 AM

Go for it! It will look cute!

Farm Quilter 04-03-2011 07:36 AM

Love scrappy bindings! Go for it!!

Ditto :D

This shows a recovery on a goof I made on a table runner. With advice from fellow QBs it turned out prettier than it would have originally. I ended up giving it as a gift and the recipient was impressed with my clever binding.

quiltmom04 04-03-2011 09:06 AM

Anymore, I actually PLAN to have the binding different. It's fun!

TeeGee 04-03-2011 09:23 AM

if you make a different fabric and start it at 1/3 of the way down on one side, across the top or bottom, then diagonally equidistant up or down the other side, it becomes a design, not a flaw

polly13 04-03-2011 09:24 AM

Things always work out----especially if you walk away for a short time.

lbc 04-03-2011 09:38 AM

What's wonderful about quilting is that we can do what we want and don't need to explain to anyone--it is exploring our artistic side. Go for whatever works!!!

milp04 04-03-2011 09:43 AM

I think everyone has done that at least once so don't feel bad you're in good company. I would stop halfway and use something else that matches and finish the binding. Consider it as planned with the project.
