He picked me up a belated birthday present a late 1950-s Singer 401 in cabinet with a stool. The drawers have lots of cams and some feet. The machine itself also has many built in stitches. He just brought it home and the machine looks like a mega workhorse. I can't wait to try this one out. I am so excited!
DH just figured out that this baby girl is from Anderson, North Carolina 1951. They were only manufactured there for one year. It is so exciting to learn about her. I know her previous owner was an avid seamstres and quilter. Also the previous owner engraved her SS number in the foot pedal and the machine itself. She appears to be very well cared for but unfortunately the son and grandson damaged the cabinet and machine a bit when transporting and handling her (hinges and scratches). DH is Mr. Fixed so I am hopeful. I don't think the stool is original to this machine but it works. |

I love your machine, I have one just like it, a 401A, I really like sewing on it, bought it new in 1960, and have sewed a great deal, clothes (for seven kids) and quilting, etc.

The stool might have been from Singer. I have one very much like it that did come with my Mom's 1951 15-91.
The cabinet is beautiful! What fun! |
I have my moms 401A. I learned to sew on it when I was four. Used it until I got married and now it's back in my life. I love this machine. Enjoy yours, Happy Birthday.

I love your machine and cabinet!!! I have a Singer 500A (Rocketeer) and would love to find a 401 to go with it.

SWEET machine and cabinet.

I had a 401A and always considered it one of the best machines I have ever had. Still wondering what I was thinking when I traded it in on a Viking.
|
Nice! Enjoy.

Wow, I am drooling with envy. Was the 401 the first model with zig-zag and cams for various stitches?
|
lucky you. i love those 50's machines.

How lovely! This is the machine I learned to sew on a hundred years ago. ;) And it's the machine that fired up my obsession with vintage sewing machines.
I've outfitted mine with a cabinet that's identical to my grandmother's and full of vintage tools and notions. On eBay, I even found a pair of pinking shears exactly like hers and in the same box that she always insisted hers belonged in. :) You're going to love that machine - it's so capable and reliable and easy to run! Congratulations and happy birthday, too! :) |
Woohoo the sister from mine. DH is cleaning it right now but it should be done soon. I can't wait to play with her.
