I had to have a back to school door hanging

Since I am a teacher, I really wanted to come up with a back-to-school door hanging for my front door at home. When I think of school, I tend to flash back to my elementary days with Sally, Dick and Jane, where I learned to read. Unfortunately, we no longer use Sally, Dick and Jane to teach reading, but personally, I miss them. So, this is what I came up with. To bring them into the 21st century, I had to add some bling.

Does anyone else remember Sally, Dick and Jane?

mrsponcho1 08-14-2012 06:37 PM

Yes, I remember. My dh and I were just talking about them the other day. Oh, and don't forget Spot. See Spot run....lol

Thanks for bringing back school day memories.

Neesie 08-14-2012 06:43 PM

I certainly remember them. :) That's just too cute!!!

Puff, the cat! (I'm cheating - I have some reproductions of these I read with my grandkids.) :)

TexasSunshine 08-14-2012 06:57 PM

I remember them and love the fabric.

I purchased a couple old Sally, Dick and Jane books from Ebay several years ago. I was thrilled to find them.

Love your door hanging! Not only do I remember them fondly, I think children today should still be using them to learn to read. Children respond well to repeated phrases and words. The children book authors understand this principle and use it to their advantage.

I feel the same way. Look, we learned to read, even if the people in our families weren't named Sally, Dick or Jane. Our books now have to be politically correct, everyone must be able to relate to them and they should be exciting. That's crazy. Let's just learn how to read. This is one of my pet peeves.

Oh i cant belive this,i found a book of dick and jane at a yard sale ann gave it to my 5yo gd,and she loved it,,,i had them in school

Love this fabric! We had 'Janet and John' (no little sister), but I'm sure the dog was called Spot too. I grew up on a diet of Enid Blyton books and somehow managed to survive the experience, lol.

Thanks for bringing back school day memories.

I went to Catholic school and our reader characters were Ann & David and Zip the dog. I think the cat was Mew, maybe.

GrannieAnnie 08-14-2012 11:33 PM

Just perfect. Where did you find your fabric? And I love the raindrops

I disagree about "correctness". I think it is a great advantage to kids to see a variety of people in books that have pictures. I know that studies support me on this.

Of course, when I was a 1st grader, a very long time ago, I looked something like "Sally" but I hated those books, probably because I was way past them when they were handed out. I also felt the dialog was really silly. I greatly prefer the current system of placing kids by skill level. I wished I'd dared act like my best friend's brother, who finished reading Fun with Dick and Jane while they were being passed out and loudly asked for a more interesting book.

alfosa421 08-15-2012 02:52 AM

sadly I am old enough to remember them (sigh)

BeverlyH 08-15-2012 03:18 AM

That is a precious wall hanging! I love it.

nygal 08-15-2012 03:22 AM

That is sweet. The kids will love it.

tezell0801 08-15-2012 04:21 AM

This is adorable and I do remember Sally, Dick and Jane, and their dog Spot!

jeank 08-15-2012 04:30 AM

The method of repeated phrases is good, but still use them---no way.

The situations are not what the children of today can identify with. All complete families, mom is home, and do you see anyone of color?

I like your wall hanging, it brings back fond memories, but I like Dick and Jane in history and glad they are not still hanging on for my grandchildren.

Oh my goodness. Yes I remember, thats what I learned how to read with. I love old books.

kat112000 08-15-2012 05:00 AM

I love it! I wish they were still using simple names. As a mother with two children (now teens) with dyslexia it is very hard for them to read as it is without complicated names.

piepatch 08-15-2012 05:04 AM

Perfect, and perfectly done! I love it!

Beeboop71 08-15-2012 05:12 AM

Love your back to school door hanging. I have a question? Do you stitch around every letter when you applique? I am fairly new to applique and it just seems some pieces would be hard to stitch down, for example inside the letter "A" you couldn't stitch that down could you?

BellaBoo 08-15-2012 06:43 AM

I have my first grade Fun with Dick and Jane book! My teacher gave it to me because I was the best reader in class. My kids practiced reading from it and my granddaughter learned to read it before kindergarten. I bought a whole bolt of the original Dick and Jane fabric before it was taken off the market because of copyright issues. Michael Miller now has the rights to print certain images of Dick and Jane.

haylillan 08-15-2012 07:39 AM

love your wall hanging. Dick and Jane books best i ever read, they started me off to a life time of loving to read.

barny 08-15-2012 07:40 AM

Oh yes, I remember Dick and Jane and Spot. Now I have great grandkids who can't and don't want to read. Thanks to our government and their political views. We have to be real careful and don't hurt anyone's feelings. Bah, humbug! Ha. I love your quilt.

Sewfine 08-15-2012 07:41 AM

That is pretty. Love your fabric. Yes, I do remember those days. Brought the book at our local Wal-Mart. That is what I teach my grands to read from when they come over.

needles3thread 08-15-2012 07:44 AM

Yes, I sure do remember them. They are still popular, aren't they?

Up North 08-15-2012 07:46 AM

I have 3 of the Dick and Jane books! Love them!

BLAP 08-15-2012 02:32 PM

I certainly remember and I love your door hanging.

I use the blanket stitch and yes, I stitch around each letter and inside the ones that have inner places to stitch. It is really a lot easier than it looks. I love appliqueing.

GrannieAnnie, I purchased the fabric at a quilt shop in Branson, Missouri. I have seen it at many of our LQS.

Doesn't anyone remember Alice and Jerry?

rj.neihart 08-16-2012 03:43 AM

Yes, I do remember them! And I think you did a wonderful job on this project!

Edie 08-16-2012 03:47 AM

I remember Dick and Jane - yes and "See Spot Run, Run Spot run, Run, run, run. Run must have been the word for the day. I did find a Dick and Jane book at a garage sale and bought it right away. So I still have a Dick and Jane book. The grandkids thought it was a hoot!!!! Our little neighbor boy turned three in June and can count to twenty in French and ten in German (he's just learning German) and of course, his English is impecable. No use to read him Dick and Jane!!!!! The kids are so far advanced than we were. I do think we are smarter though!!!!!! Thanks for the memory! And your door hanging was so sweet. What a great way for a child to come to school! Edie

PS - I wonder what would happen if we took a week of our school days and compared them literally to today's school days.

Ellageo 08-16-2012 04:11 AM

I just LOVE it!! Made me smile...I have a little fabric like that also..& a few Dick & Jane books!!

Latrinka 08-16-2012 04:43 AM

That is too cute! Yes I member them!

cherokeerose 08-16-2012 04:46 AM

I remember Dick, Jane and Spot. I found my 5 yr old GD level 1 and 2 Dick and Jane books. She and I read the level 1 all the time. I let her read the sight words that she knows and I read the remainder of the sentence. Need to find some new ones as I think she has these memorized now and I am not sure how many of the words she really knows and how many she just remembers.

MimiBug123 08-16-2012 04:57 AM

We had Alice, Jerry and their dog, Jip. I don't remember Dick and Jane, But love the fabric and the quilt. As a former teacher, I think it's so sad that children can't read, but are pushed along anyway, getting further and further behind. The system is worried about being politically correct and losing children in all the "correctness."
