Joan, I suspect there are a few more close on this board. There is one member who summers here. Blue Ridge is the county seat here.

I haven't seen my grass in a month!

Deborah12687 12-28-2010 06:20 AM

I really don't like the snow when it has high moisture, I got a bad case of pluracy from going in and out visiting family. I got a gift card for Joannes and couldn't wait so I went shopping yesterday. Welllll....made me worse so I am wrapped up in my quilt and that is were I am going to stay for the day.

judi wess 12-28-2010 06:22 AM

I know Traverse City, my family has a home on Sanford Lake. My sister, she inherited, has to have someone shovel the snow off the roof in Dec. The roof pitch is inadequate to support the snow weight.
Joan, there is a fabric store a short walk from my house, they have outdated fabric for a fraction of retail. Love the shop, good seletion of notions too.

quilt3311 12-28-2010 07:08 AM

No snow here in the middle of the country, BUT last year WE had the same blizzard you just had. 6 ft drifts in front of our doors. Neighbor had to come shovel the doors out before we could get out of the house. I always try to anticipate things I will need and stock up before November. Like you, occasionally miss something---Hate when that happens.

skeet 12-28-2010 08:03 AM

from st cloud,fl. I got up at 6:00 am and I had ice on my car windows. The temp was 24 degrees. So it was cold, but I'am from Buffalo N.Y. But isn't the snow beautiful?

If you are serious about Florida, check out Ocala. We live in a 55+ community called "On Top of the World." You can find it on the Internet and can get a 3-day visitation there at a very reasonable cost. Ocala is a beautiful city of about 60,000. In the center of horse country (Marion County alone has over 35,000 horses) so you are surrounded by beautiful horse farms. Easy access to interstate, good stores, medical services, etc. We have been here almost 8 years and love it. Plus, houses are super cheap right now.

pearsonstudio 12-28-2010 08:08 AM

Let it snow, let me sew. We have hot dry summers, but not humid, beautiful springs and falls, and moderate winters. come see us in the Okanagan in BC :) PS, I also have a sweet manservant who shovels so I just enjoy the beauty :)

I too feel your pain David. My son and his fiance' are stranded in Haverhill after visiting her family for Christmas. They are trying to get home to Philly. We have about 2 feet on the ground up here. Summer's just around the corner.

MiMi in Lutz 12-28-2010 08:38 AM

I am with you Gaigai. I am in Fl and I would give anything to be in the snow And I am not young either. I love Pa and wish my kids did...then we could all move up there. But, they are here and so am I.

Bernie942 12-28-2010 09:15 AM

Did see the sun this morning, first time in over a week. About 8 inches of snow from the last snow. At least it's a "dry" snow and you can sweep it with a broom.

I live in Michigan, but I hate snow. I'm so happy to be sharing this wonderful stuff with the southern states.

No more 70 mph winds? You do realize Florida gets hurricanes, don't you. lol

Agree about Houston. Lived there only because of jobs--money does help but when I retired---took off for the other side of Austin--much better climate and liveability.

Pfffffffffffft people who like winter and snow...can have it. Give me warm sunny weather any day.

Jory 12-28-2010 02:02 PM

Was about 18 when got up yesterday and horribly windy, but in the 30's today and not quite so windy....at least here in north central PA.

Cyn 12-28-2010 02:14 PM

We got snow here at the beach in NC! It snowed one day, was a bit icey that night and next morning but it is suppose to be in the 60's later this week. Now that's the way to get a snow fix :)

dixiechunk 12-28-2010 04:50 PM

Me too, I hate that durn white stuff. I don't want to do anything but stay in bed.

3incollege 12-28-2010 05:04 PM

Just love the snow!!! Live in Pa and it is beautiful! Our summers arn't very hot like down south, hurricanes.earthquakes, mudslides hardly ever happen. So think a couple of months a year we can enjoy winter sports and wear comfy clothes sit by the fire and get more quilting done.

I'm with you, both here in MI and liking all the other seasons. We just have to endure the winters to get to all the other good stuff. And the days are already starting to get longer....Yeah!!!!

kateyb 12-28-2010 05:51 PM

We've only had about an inch of snow so far. Our average December temp is 37*. This year it is 47*. However, we are expected to get 3 - 6 inches starting tommorrow night and expected temp by Friday of 10 below. Sooo?????
The storms seem to skip over us and hit the mountains - ski areas are happy.
Last winter was the coldest for here in almost a hundred years.
So I am all set to quilt through the weekend.

earthwalker 12-28-2010 06:04 PM

We have had a couple of 40 degree celsius days over the Christmas period (that's 104 degrees farenheit)...so you can imagine snow would be a very welcome change for us. It's a more bearable 34C (94F) today, but still pretty hot to do too much.

We had a very dry winter, so our dams are very low. We are on watering restrictions, so any less than hardy plants have to be hand watered. There is a lot of bucketing of laundry water going on at our place. We have two birdbaths on the go at the moment, plus some clay saucers filled with water on the ground. The birds and lizards seem to appreciate it.

All these extremes of weather conditions....I think most of us would like a bit of milder weather all round.

kathidahl 12-28-2010 06:43 PM

Love the winter and the snow...hate the heat and humidity of summer...I can always put on enough clothing to be warm, but sure can't take off enough to be cool!! LOL

I whole heartedly agree! Another layer and warm slippers work wonders. Not a pretty sight to have to strip to cool off!

Dee 12-28-2010 07:14 PM

No matter where you live, it has a downfall.

What part of Iowa? I'm in SW MN and we're gearing up for the same mess! I'm scheduled to work on thursday afternoon and Saturday morning (I'm a nurse.) I'd rather be quilting!

Annz 12-28-2010 08:18 PM

Soon enough you will have everything you need at home and won't need to go to Joann's for anything accept for what you need, want, have to have etc.

Sadheart 12-28-2010 08:22 PM

Know how you feel also. sighs. So tired of driving in the snow.
shoveling the snow. Watching it fall.
We're suppose to get more tomorrow and Thursday.
Hugs to all. Watch you don't throw out your back shoveling.

I used to hate snow - then I learned to ski.
I used to hate summer - then I got air conditioning.
I used to hate spring and fall MUD season - then I had a son who loves to play in puddles.
Now I enjoy the seasons.
Even though I don't ski anymore.
And I hide in the A/C during the summer due to allergies.
And I'm not so enthused about mopping up another muddy trail through the house.
But I wouldn't have it any other way.
Greetings, from SW Ontario, in the snow belt.

Good for you, recognizing and counting your blessings. That little mud tracker will soon be on his own.
Waving from SW MI, also in the snow belt, but not much this week. Thankfully!!

[quote=Jory]Thanks for reminding me. I'm originally from Okmulgee, now buried under this New England/East Coast blizzard, and I was thinking about moving SOUTH! Now the question is, just how FAR south do I need to go? The equator?? I'd better brush up on my Spanish!

I don't know how far south you might have to go but don't bother coming west. I'm in western Ariz. & our temps are dropping to low 30s this wk. with poss. snow in Scottsdale which runs east of Phoenix. Now there's a show stopper. We snowbirds don't come south to deal with cold & snow. LOL

I think what you are getting Wednesday night, we will be getting Thursday and Friday - it is all the weathermen are talking about now! Rain, sneet, snow, warm weather, that being upper 30's and low 40's and then rapidly dropping down to possible below zero weather and all that wet stuff will freeze on our streets. I imagine the Highway Dept and the Cities will start salting today to keep ahead of it. I have to go grocery shopping tomorrow and will start out around 5:45 AM and get home before it all hits the fan! I told my husband that I could get some ribs for New Years Eve in case we can't get down to Famous Dave's for our annual Rack of Ribs dinner!!!!!! Oh, well, I am embroidering a Christmas quilt right now and we will have parades and football to watch and probably by that time most everything will be over with and we can watch the salt melt the ice! Start the New Year off with clean streets. Happy New Year. Edie

grannie cheechee 12-29-2010 08:05 AM

We moved to get away from the cold and snow. Its cold here now, but we are suppose ot have a warming spell where the weatherman said we could probably open the windows for awhile. Some of our family is still in Iowa, and I only go in the summer time to visit.
