OK I had this goal set to use all of my scraps that have been collecting in my bins for the last couple of years....I have been sorting, cutting and sewing. I thought I was in the home stretch today because I have about 25 different sized panels sewn together and sketched many ideas for quilts and I have a few scrap quits in process as we speak.....I figured all I would have is a few tiny peices that I would save for paper peicing projects.....Funny thing happened.... :evil:

I found another bin full of scraps???? WHAT!!!!????? :roll:

so I guess I am not going to meet that goal..but of all goals to fail that is a really good one..because I love scraps...scrap quilts and making something of nothing ..so to say! So I have been defeated..but in a good way and I will just have to set smaller goals next time! :shock:

We had previously discussed how scraps multiply in the night, so that's probably what that was :D

I have found that scraps are always among us no matter how hard we try to organize them. That is not to say to let them pile up but if you accomplished sorting 2 years worth WOW!! I get mine under control and then cut out another quilt and they are back again.

Why you think you are defeated? Just attack those scraps, keep working on it until the box is gone, and who knows, maybe, if you are lucky, another box will appreaf from somewhere. You are not defeated! You are just still fighting!

I have a plan, While I am still on severance from my job I am going to try to get some king size batting (2 or 3) and keep around. Later, when I am home looking for a job, I will keep myself sane using all the scraps I have around. I am thinking big! I am planning a king size scrappy quilt, with only small scraps on the top and backing. When I finally run out of scraps to piece, then I will start quilting them. By then I should have a job and be able to start my stash again, will have a few completed quilts and will still be sane.

At least that is what I keep on telling myself.

I wouldn't call it defeated....I'd call it Blessed! :) I just love going through my scrap bins, but I too think they multiply when we aren't looking. I'm working on a scrap quilt right now but my scrap basket seems just as full as it was when I started.

What is your most favorite pattern to follow for scrap quilting? I have lots of scraps and I do lots of charity quilts. I am always looking for new or different patterns that sew up fairly fast for these quilts. Most of the ones I do are about 40 X 60 and they are tied quilts so that people can tie a knot and say a prayer. I really would like to find some good scrap quilt patterns. Thanks

There is a class called Scrap Therapy. There is also patterns to go with that. It teaches you to cut your scraps in the most usuable sizes and then makes beautiful quilts out of them. I have made several and I love the patterns. Hope this will help you.

I like quiltville as well...but I also just use them in different things and draw up my own sketches and I am sure none of it is original just trying to use what I have....I will post pics as soon as I get borders on....that is my biggest problem.....borders..borders..borders! Several years ago, I got tired of all the scraps, sacked them up and there were 4 big black trash bags full, and gave them to a beginning quilter. She was real pleased, and I was too, the bins were empty. But then someone on this board showed the disappearing 9 patch which I had to make and I started using the new accumulation. But unfortunately, I can't sew scrappy fast enough to get to the bottom of the bins!

I am teaching a mystery quilt class next week and have chosen a scrap quilt. I am taking my own scraps for everyone to use. The blocks we make will go together for a "Child Delight" quilt. It will go to a child just entering the foster care system. So 2 good things will come of this - I will have a lot less scraps to deal with - and hopefully we will make a child or two happy!!!

I am going to my first meeting in my area Saturday for Project Linus. You can do a search on www.projectlinus.org to find your area locations. They have donated fabric as well as you can donate the quilts you have made. The website can tell you the size most needed in your area. The website has patterns available for quilting, crocheting and knitting.

I vote for the D9P for a scrappy quilt!! I also learned about them here and just love how a scrappy D9P looks. If you don't have enough large pieces for the squares, just sew a bunch of the scraps together and then cut the squares and proceed. It would make it nice and scrappy.
I am making scrappy D9P quilts for my 10 mo. old grand daughters and appliqued butterflies, and other things on some of the big squares after the quilt tops were sewn together. they are turning out quite nicely.

I actually keep everything except salvage.
My BFF swear I lived through the depression because I am infamous for saving things because I know I will use it. I am getting better at getting rid of some things now but other things like fabric I can't part with. I grew up poor so we used every bit of everything and we never wasted food....lol.

those little one inch peices are good for applique and paper peicing..plus I Just saw a tutorial on those scrappy flowers I am going to try them out..cause I am just sure I will love it! :D

As far as donating them ... I am a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Ephrata, Washington ... I can help you find veterans to donate the quilt/quilt tops to ... I can find you Project Linus, I have a visiting nurse who will personally deliver quilts to hospitalized veterans in nursing homes ...
I also know of a welcome basket program for new babies born to military families ...

Thanks Omak..as soon as I get them quilted..I will call you. Well actually I have someone from Project linus come..but I think I will have a few more. Hey if you want some unfinshed quilt tops for someone to quilt I have a few of those....I have a queen I bought from someone it is really pretty scalloped edges and what not--I got really inexpensive and thought I could quilt it one day to donate..so let me know and I will give you some finished tops/unquilted tops if you want them. :-)

If they are too big for the hospitals/nursing homes, I can use them for fund raisers for the Post for our projects for veterans, children and youth, and the community.

Not to worry, make yourself a warm cup of tea to go, drive yourself to your fave LQS and buy 15 yds of the prettiest fabric you see. Take a 2 day vacation in your sewing romm and call us in the morning!!! This is a sure fire way to deal with scraps!!!!! teehee
