I have started collecting fabrics for my Postage Stamp. I know that you're not supposed to duplicate any fabrics but( ) some of my scraps have so many different looks that once they are cut into 1 1/2" squares you would never know that they were from the same fabric. Is that acceptable ???

I think this will be my "leader & ender" quilt.

seahorsesanna 09-15-2011 05:01 PM

who is to know but you?

leatheflea 09-15-2011 05:09 PM

Oh I hear sirens! They are gonna get you if you keep telling all your secrets!.....SHHHHH....

DogHouseMom 09-15-2011 05:32 PM

Who said you can't duplicate fabrics? If you want to, do it. If YOU are against it just remember ... you bought both sides of each piece of fabric so you can use both :)

bearisgray 09-15-2011 05:37 PM

I wondered that, too - but if every piece LOOKS different - why not?

I've also wondered how people keep a gazillion pieces sorted so they remember what they have and don't have.

I was thinking it might be a fun idea to cut identical squares and have people try to match them up. Sort of a grown up I Spy type of quilt.

Glassquilt 09-15-2011 06:11 PM

Agree Duplicate and make a game of finding the matching piece.

Oh what a cute idea!!

I have been wanting to make a postage stamp quilt. What size are your squares going to be?

MadQuilter 09-15-2011 06:22 PM

Your quilt, your fabric, your choice. I don't think anyone is going to sit there and try to find duplicates. If they do, beat them whith your biggest ruler!

I'm making 'em 1" so I'm cutting 'em 1 1/2."

dublb 09-15-2011 06:23 PM

oops! Double post!

OneMoreQuilt 09-15-2011 06:51 PM

You can duplicate fabrics in a Postage Stamp quilt. Some are even done in designs like Many Trips Around the World, 4 Patch, Nine Patch etc. You are not supposed to duplicate fabrics in a Charm Square quilt. Soooo..... try not to duplicate fabrics in a Charm Square Postage Stamp quilt!!!

Jennie and Me 09-15-2011 06:57 PM

I need to make one to use up some of my scraps. Wow, 1" finished, huh. Guess I should start it as an ongoing project, 'cause I might get a little tired of working with such small pieces. Yep, I'm in on this one.

Crafty1 09-15-2011 06:59 PM

It's your quilt so who would know anyways! There are lots of PS quilts made with duplicates, so it's up to you. The one I made I chose not to have duplicates, but the next I'm working on will have duplicates :) Have fun!

Peckish 09-15-2011 07:04 PM

Wow, you're going to cut all those little squares individually!?!? You are one brave quilter! I always figured if I ever made a postage stamp quilt, I'd HAVE to strip-piece it to keep myself sane!

I don't see any problem at all with using fabrics that end up looking similar. As an earlier poster said, who will know?

luckylindy333 09-15-2011 07:11 PM

Girls and young women used to make charm quilts. If they completed the quilt with no matching blocks, then the "charm" was complete and they would find a husband- kind of like a magic spell!

This is why I'm going to do this as a leader & ender quilt. It'll take me a while but I won't go crazy.

Your quilt, your rules. :D

BETTY62 09-15-2011 08:42 PM

I think it will have so many tiny squaes that no one will notice if there is a duplication.

natalieg 09-15-2011 09:20 PM

I have been wanting to make one with the 1 1/2" squares forever. I had a large amoupnt of them cut and just kept collecting. This was when I found out about being allergic to the chemicals in the fabric so I gave them all away.
Now, I prewash my fabric and started collecting again, but I collect the 1 1/2" strips.

One member on here told me a good faster way to make them is to sew several 1 1/2" strips together and cut them at
1 1/2" strips. You need several different sets, then you could sew those strips into blocks and then the blocks together. The matching of the corners seems like it would be easier because you are doing shorter areas at a time! Doing it this way would obviously give you duplicates, but you sew the blocks with different strip sets to make them look different.

There is also a swap on here for 1 1/2" squares for more variety!

MacThayer 09-16-2011 12:01 AM

I think using different versions of the same fabric is fine. No one is going to notice because they will be seeing different designs. And even if you should happen to "duplicate" a square, as long as they are widely scattered in the quilt, so the eye does not bring them together when scanning the quilt, believe me, they won't notice. And anyway, it's your quilt. As far as I know, the "Quilt Police" have not issued any hard and fast rules on this one!"

Havplenty 09-16-2011 12:16 AM

there is a postage stamp quilt challenge going on now at http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-144197-1.htm. and there is a regular 1.5" stamp square trade that happens about 4-5 times a year. the current one is at http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-142366-1.htm. but as a general rule, it is your quilt so you make it the way you want. i decided that my postage stamp quilt in progress will have some dups in it. and again i said my quilt so my rules.

Sienna's GiGi 09-16-2011 02:37 AM

Yup! I say use both sides, different cuts of the same fabric, etc. I'm collecting and cutting "stamps" too and I already told "self" we are not going to make this more than what it is.

lynnsim 09-16-2011 02:43 AM

I believe that a charm quilt uses no duplicates. But a regular quilt can have dups. I'm making a 2" postage stamp quilt; I started it months ago; so, it is a work in progress. I wanted it to be a charm one, but there is no way. So, there will be a few duplicates. The squares are so small, I'm sure they won't be noticable. I've traded with several people; still need quite a way to go....

Quilt-Till-U-Wilt 09-16-2011 02:52 AM

I'd definitely strip piece.

kathyd 09-16-2011 03:02 AM

I thought "postage stamp" referred to the shape and size of the pieces. I talked with a lady 2 weeks ago and her grandmother had made one of 1 1/2" by 1" rectangles. Most stamps aren't squares anyway!
When I made mine I strip pieced it. It isn't hard to match fabrics but the overall look is great.

I won't tell...and besides as quilters we make up our own rules.

applique 09-16-2011 03:10 AM

The postage stamp quilts made as pictures have duplicates. Often done on the fusible grid. Fantastic way to make a cross stitch pattern into a quilt!!

I have been cutting 2" squares for postage stamp and I will have many duplicates. It is my quilt!

If they do, they are obviously mentally unstable and should be taken to the nearest mental health facility~ lol

nhweaver 09-16-2011 03:35 AM

I like the idea of using different bits of the same fabric, scattered around the quilt. For me, The 1" squares sound difficult to keep lined up, I wonder if accuquilt has a 1.5" square die, would make cutting simple, laying out scraps and cutting.

Can you tell me what is a "leader and ender" quilt. I have read it on this site before, but never asked.

A postage stamp quilt may be a charm quilt--a quilt in which each patch is a unique fabric. However, a postage stamp quilt, by definition is a quilt made of tiny pieces and isn't defined by pattern or fabric choices.

Therefore you can have a postage stamp quilt or a postage stamp (Aaaaagh! the pieces! the pieces!)charm quilt, as you choose.

Mommomjoann 09-16-2011 03:50 AM

Dublb....you don't know what you are starting!!!! I started mine over two years ago, and still going. I have them in 5"x5" sqs.(25 pieces),stacked in containers. Don't know if I should put shushing around each one or just sew them all together. Each piece has been hand-sewn together. Makes a great on going project to take on trips or waiting time.
Good Luck...and yes, I agree...no one will know if you cut out a different section from the same material....but us!!!!
