And then there is always the person that does not want to spend the money on a class or pattern and wants you to teach them the procedure or loan out your book. I don't mind sharing but it can be costly to take classes and books are not cheap either.

BettyGee 01-03-2011 12:41 PM

I've know a couple of folks like that over the years. Personally if someone asks for a recipe or a pattern I am flattered and will go to great lengths to provide it. My little craft club is made up of seniors like me and we trade recipes, sewing projects, and ideas of all sorts.

As one member suggested, take a picture and post it here. I think she is right, you'll have the name of the pattern before the day is out.

stitchofclass2 01-03-2011 01:08 PM

It has happened to me. Asked if I could take a photograph. She said, "No!" I still think about that quilt.

Tweety2911 01-03-2011 01:51 PM

How sad. Quilters I know are eager to share anything related to quilting. Whatever pattern is used always looks different, as we all have our own tastes in fabrics. Perhaps you can do a search if you remember the block design.

emsgranny 01-03-2011 02:07 PM

I would be honored if someone asked me for a pttern!!! I know that most quilters are that way....I commend the ones that share -- I noticed that Riversong shared a tute on her centerpieces even though she is selling them!!! How very thoughtful and unselfish!!! All quilters should be that way ~ unfortunately there a few that arent forth coming - maybe ask one of her quilting "buddies" - they may be able to tell you Cheryl :D

FYI, the spinach and puff pastry was probably Spanakopita
Good recipe is here: http://allrecipes.com//Recipe/spanak...ii/Detail.aspx

You know, maybe she did not make it and did not know what to say. She forgot to ask the name. Maybe?

Me too, would have gladly passed the pattern on as I'm not likely to make it twice anyway

My former MIL was an excellent cook & enjoyed it very much. I quickly learned after trying a couple of her recipes that even though she would gladly share the recipe, she would leave out some necessary ingredient so yours would never compete with hers. I was young & trusted everybody then, but I finally figured out her secret.

I have a friend who has shared her original patterns with 'friends' only to have them teach it in the local quilt shop where she teaches, passing it off as their own design.

Unfortunately, there are folks like that in the world.

Also, when I taught quilting (for money in a shop) I asked them to sign up for the class. It is not fair to those who pay to give it to someone for free. I myself have paid to take a class just so I could get the pattern and then made it at home on my own.

Having said all that ... most people will share. I do share with my quilting 'friends' and would share with anyone on this board, but when I'm planning on selling something (like a handbag or other craft project) I don't really want to give my design to just anyone (locally) so they can make it instead of buying one or even worse, they make it and start selling it in competation with me. This may seem selfish but, frankly, I need the income.

yepper, go visit the shut-in.. You'll both get something out of it! You can take pictures of the quilt.. bet the shut-in will be more than happy to show you the quilt.. and that person will love having you visit and take an interest in her and her new quilt..

I wouldn't mention your not being able to get the name from whoever was having a bad day and would give it.. cripes!

I am sort of surprised at this poor lady.. first, most quilters are more than happy to tell you anything you ask regarding their quilts.. and second, most church people are usually nice and happy to share.. She was really having a bad day!! Perhaps she just needs a sweet prayer said for her.

craftyone27 01-03-2011 09:26 PM

I don't understand her reaction either. If someone wanted to know about a pattern of something that I was showing off to them, I certainly would share it. If it was a pattern I had designed myself, I would say that, end of conversation. I had a similar response from a board member here when I asked people to post pics of their avatar quilts and tell pattern and designer. I was interested in seeing bigger photos of peoples work not trying to steal their ideas. One meber posted that she would not share her qult pattern and wasn't going to give me free lessons. I was shocked! Here is the link to the topic if you are interested in seeing the quilts of those who did want to share. http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-72553-1.htm
Good luck finding the pattern for the mystery quilt!!

Hmmmm . . . are you sure she's a church member?

quiltingnonie 01-04-2011 05:31 PM

I have a cheesecake recipe that is out of this world - in fact it has won contests! I've been asked for the recipe many times and am glad to share it - on ONE condition: that they do not substitute ingredients. If they are going to make it, it has to have all the calorie and fat laden components that make it wonderful. LOL

Sounds like she has insecurities. I always consider it the ultimate compliment when someone asks me for a copy of anything I've made.

I was thinking along these lines, too. Maybe she's embarrassed by something - like maybe she bought the blocks already made at a thrift store, or she copied someone's pattern that was copyrighted, or something like that.

bjnicholson 01-04-2011 06:22 PM

She should have at least given some reason for not giving the name of the pattern even the fact that she didn't know it or where the pattern came from. Maybe she was just shy.

MaryStoaks 01-04-2011 06:33 PM

Maybe she bought the quilt and said she made it. She would be embarassed to admit it if she didn't know the pattern.

Quilters are the last ones you'd ever expect to be rude but I guess the saying goes: one in every crowd. Being new to this board, I want to thank you for sharing the thread to the avatar quilt pics. I had so much fun looking at all those beautiful quilts!!!

Sounds like a nice charitable thing to do - what a - what a bitc....

My aunt, DM's sis, made the most wonderful chocolate cake. She said she gave DM the recipe, but we think she left out an ingredient or changed the recipe when she wrote it down. Now she is gone, no one can enjoy it, and I really loved that cake! She was a very sweet person otherwise...

Being a church member doesn't have much to do with these things. When I was young, I used to read Ann Landers' column in the paper every day. One of her quotes has always stuck with me:
"A church is a hospital for sinners, not a museum for saints."

AnnieH 01-05-2011 01:00 AM

We all have bad mood days. Doesn't sound like she gets much love in her life. We're very lucky on here.

An excellent quote! I miss Ann Landers.

SO very true, they like to be in charge------worked with one!

needlenut 01-21-2011 04:09 AM

I, too, gladly share information about my projects and often offer to teach someone how to do her own. Often they want you to spend your time making one for them not spend the time and effort to do it for themselves. It is a little discouraging to share a favorite recipe at a potluck dinner and then have that person bring it to the next potluck meal.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery!

EagarBeez 01-22-2011 08:38 AM

Are you sure she made it and not someone else? Did she perhaps get the pattern from someone else, who told her not to share?
I know I would be honored if someone asked for the name of my quilt. So far, I have done my own design and asked DH to draw out my idea on the computer, and then print it out for me. I have put up one pattern all ready to share with others.
She also maybe, just didn't want to. I am like the others, if you could take a picture or describe it, someone in this group may be able to help you

Sandi Furtado 01-27-2011 05:23 PM

Chris, thank you so much for asking for avatar pictures. It was amazing going through all of them. I so much appreciate it because it is fun to see what others have and are working on. I did not see one that was exactly the same. It is sad when people don't want to share their patterns, recipes, etc., etc., etc. In others sharing on this board I have found some patterns I would very much like to try. I am glad that people on this board are willing to share with others!!!
