Yesterday I stopped by VA and found 7 cotton sheets in excellent condition. Last time I was there they didn't have any cotton ones. There was one twin and the rest were queen and king all for $18.00. There's 3 or 4 that will make great backings. I love a good bargain and it really made my day! Just wanted to share.

What is VA?

wolfkitty 04-03-2011 03:27 PM

Took me a minute, too. Volunteers of America.

For those who have St. Vincent dePaul thrift stores in your area, you may find some good buys there. I pay $1.50 and $1.99 for my flat sheets. I don't know if they have a standard price guide in other states, but I do know that in OHIO they are very reasonable. I use them on the backs of my quilts. I have even gotten some to make curtains. I no longer shop at Goodwill because they have gotten so high.

Please tell us about the Thrift stores in your area and how their prices are. We can all use a good trip to a Thrift store and help a charity at the same time.

Lolllllllllllllllllllll, me too! I had scrolled back up and saw that she lived in Ohio, and thought... why did she drive all the way to Virginia for an $18 deal? lolllllllll.

Never heard of the Volunteers of America.

nett2 04-03-2011 06:12 PM

Sorry about the VA. I didn't think about them not having stores everywhere. I have to drive about 30 miles to get to ours but if I'm going by anyway which I was yesterday I usually make it a point to stop.
Wish we had a St. Vincent dePaul thrift store. I too have quit going to the Goodwill and Salvation Army because their prices are too high and they don't have much good stuff.
We have another thrift store in town called Thrift Store but I've heard their prices are high. Guess I'll never know for sure because everytime I go past there's a closed sign on the door.

great find!

Salvation Army- Tuesdays have us buying sheets for $1 a bag. Goodwill is too overpriced for my budget. Sometimes they are more expensive than new!

IrelandDragonQuilting 04-03-2011 06:56 PM

Good deal on your find, sure sounds like you had a great day!

We don't have anything but a Gateway in our area and I have not ever found anything worth having there.

Here on Long Island, we have Savers, a wonderful, extremely well organized, superbly run thrift shop which benefits Big Brothers/Big Sisters. It is my 'go to place' now for materials. I'm finding 100% cotton tablecloths, napkins, etc. which I re-use in my quilting projects. I hope you all have a 'Savers' nearby!

june6995 04-04-2011 03:16 AM

Why didn't I think of this sooner? I did a Google search for: Thrift stores in.....(insert your city) and see what you find. Places i never knew existed. Now I have some new places to check out. What did you find??

I thought I have read that using sheets isn't good because the density of the material is different. Am I wrong?

MillieMoseley 04-04-2011 05:46 AM

WOW great deal.

I thought I would fall off my chair when reading how many people seem to use sheets for backs of quilts. You are right that the density of sheets makes it hard for the needle to go through it and I never use sheets for backing of any of my quilted projects, if you keep checking you can find great quality cotton at the close out section of your LQS to match the quality of the cotton on top. I took the "Clothing and Textile Advisers" course at my local Cooperative Extension a number of years ago and we studied how fabric was made.

I know I quit going to goodwill altogether. They raised their prices almost to new item prices here.Unreal. We have a store ran by Missouri counceil of the blind. Best prices ever.Sheets are about $1.50 but they have lots of furniture and decor items.also clothes. Couches run about $20 they are so cheap they have a great turn over.So you can go a couple times a week and it's almost all different.Love it.

Hot Gram, only hand quilters will tell you that
they would be hard to quilt through, perhaps! I do machine quilting on a frame and all my quilts go to charities, so I buy what fits my budget. Those who get my quilts don't pay too much attention to thread count or that sort of thing. They are just happy to have a quilt. Most of mine have gone to people with AIDS. They are so appreciative.

I went to several of our motels and asked them for sheets that they were throwing out for charity quilts. Several weeks ago I got two huge bags of sheets. Some were just ripped by the hem and others I could not see what was wrong with them. Can cut them up for blocks for backs of strip piecing or use them for inside the quilts for charity. Nothing beats free stuff when they are just throwing in the garbage anyway.
