I try to remind myself that another fabric will come along that will be just as fabulous.

There is always something just a little bit prettier somewhere. Cut, then start your search to find something you'll love even more. :-)

If you do not use it someday someone else will. Lady told me one day who was I saving that fine china for My KIDS. Use it, cut it and enjoy

When I find fabric I love I buy extra and the min. I get home I cut that extra off, smile. Then I experiment with blocks until I come up with what I want. Works for me.

I bought yards and yards of a beautiful (to me) multi-colored toile. I have used small portions in several quilts and have found another pattern to use some of it. It is called Colonial Elegance in the March/April 2011 magazine. I am going to make it larger than the magazine by using the toile in an additional border.

Take a look at the post under the "Pictures" section titled "Quilter wanna be" by Kendallsmom on 3/12/2011. She is a new quilter and sewer who has made some beautiful tops with large pieces of fabric that would be perfect for those pieces you don't want to cut. We could all take a lesson from her!

There have been only a few pieces of fabric I hated to cut so I bought more and cut it.

Hi! I see you are from Edinburgh. When I was there I never had an opportunity to look at any fabric stores. I wondered if fabric choices were diff. Than ours in the states. I would love to see pics of your fabric stores inside. Is there any way you Cld do that for an Avid Scots loving American?
|
i've never had that problem.. my problem is when i have a really special fabric.. i don't want to use the last pc of it..
|
I am doing a quilt now that i love the material. I have taken a large piece and am making a lap quilt. I am putting other material around it to make a frame for it. The rest i am going to do the same except make smaller versions of the big one. It seems as if fabric talks and wants to be done in a certain way. If that makes since to you

Now as soon as I get the piece washed and ironed, before I put it in my stash, I cut a piece of it. That takes some of the fear out of cutting it in the future. |
I've made whole cloth wall hangings out of a couple of pieces that I just couldn't cut. They still make me smile every time I walk by them

Don't try to get over it, it will never happen! Use it as the center panel in a quilt or cut big squares or rectangles. Or just enjoy looking at it.
Ricky Timms said in a seminar I went to that we don't have fabric stashes, we have fabric collections because we have stuff that we will never ever part with. So true, so true. |

I share a lot of that feeling.....but then I get so excited to see what it would look like in a quilt.....I take a deep breath and start cutting.....It is always a surprise to me how the finished product will be!!!!
|
I do not know the answer as I have that same trouble. Maybe if we sewed something from it for our own home we could enjoy it. Laying in the drawer we are the only ones that can enjoy it.
|
I too had that problem with my "Day of the Dead" fabric collection. I took a class on making a quilted jacket from a sweatshirt. It's a crazy quilt on a sweatshirt concept. Anyhow, my quilting instructor had us stack the fabrics and just slash cut them. I could not do it, so she made the first cuts for me. It was easy after that....
As you can see from my photo, the end product was shown a our local quilt show. |

I recently saw a quilt on here where the panel was cut to use for the background squares for an attic windows type quilt. It was beautiful and I think I may have to try that idea with one of my fabrics I don't want to cut up.

So one day when the babysitter was there they wanted to do the same with some of the neighbor girls so they got a old dress that had bee in the back of the colset for a long time. I got home and got to looking at the fabric and lace that looked all so formulary to me and I ask them were did you get this and they said right were you told us to. It was a old dress that has been there for ever. What could I say but youl dolls look just as pretty as I did on my wedding day. It WAS my dress they cut up. All the girls in the neighbor hood had bride dresses. |
Oh, I know the feeling. I found a pattern by Makower and bought every yard I could find, now I don't want to cut it. Have decided whatever I use it for it will be the main focus of the quilt. Also patterns of puppies, have yards of different kinds and I'm hesitate to cut into it for fear I'll mess up. This is sounding unhealthy, fabric should make us happy - right?

If you're not sure if a pattern is right for a fabric, put up photos here and ask us. Yes that is me. I hoard the fabric and I love it all. I will go out and buy more for a project rather than use my fabric on the shelves. I have been to estate sales and seen fabrics jut thrown about ot be sold and it reminds me that I should use mine but still have a hard time making myself do so. |
Like to cut mine and make a quilt to show it off.
|
It will still be beautiful when you get the quilt made. I don't
know how to over come cutting into it. I just go for it. |
From the looks of you quilt pic you don't need to worry about your skills needing improvement. I like that one.
|
No clue on that one but I find I cut easier than I used to.
|
That does it for me: "Those beautiful fabrics that you just can't cut into.....do it......otherwise your grandkids will inherit that fabric and make Halloween costumes out of it" Snip snip snip!
|
I know exactly how you feel. I have a large (maybe 2 yds) piece of fabric that looks like a painting of an indian village. Its very beautiful. And I just can't bring myself to cut it.
|
Cut it girls just cut it up. Make a quilt called the Prints I Love and you will love it in a quilt to.
|
so make it into a painting you can hang on your wall instead of cutting it. My sil had me make him a funny looking wall hanging to put up over their fireplace. It looks great, forgot to take picture of it. Joann's has 50% off custom framing. Would that make a great frame for you fabric or what?
|
i try to always buy an extra 1/4 yard to save, so i can cut up the rest of the yardage....has helped me alot!! gina
