I had 8 strips to sew together. I didn't have very much thread in my machine but I thought I was OK. I checked my bobbin thread and it looked OK ...

Finished the strips with thread left over - Great.

Took the strips to cut them apart and.... they fell apart. I had run out of bobbin thread :!:  :!: I'll be glad when my new machine gets here 'cause it has a low bobbin indicator.

Just wanted to vent :hunf:

OH MY GOSH! Sewing machines come with low bobbin indicators????? I NEED one of those! I cannot TELL you how many times the bobbin eating monster has attacked me! I hear it giggle with every seam I sew! It usually strikes within the first three inches of a border seam...which I don't notice till I reach the end!

redrummy 02-27-2010 10:34 AM

I had that problem this week. I was using up the bobbin thread from the embroifery machine, hate to waste it, and thought I was watching it closly. Wrong. It got me. more than once...lots more. I was sewing away, thinking I was making headway on these 2 I am piecing...oh well, I got to use up a lot of the partial bobbins anyway.

Olivia's Grammy 02-27-2010 10:48 AM

I have a Brother with the low bobbin light. It comes on when the bobbin is half empty. By the time it runs out I've forgotten is was low. I didn't really like that feature for that reason. When looking for a new machine that was not one of the features "I had to have."

Up North 02-27-2010 11:15 AM

I have a brother SE 350 and it refuses to sew if the bobbin thread is running out or if the top thread breaks. Love, hate that feature! Especially when I have 2 inches to go and know the bobbin thread left will make it!!

blahel 02-27-2010 06:24 PM

yes that is a feature that i want on my next machine..

Chasing Hawk 02-27-2010 06:26 PM

low bobbin thread indicator, just like the low fuel alarm on my truck.
But, do we pay heed to this alarm? I am guilty of waiting till the fumes are almost evaporated before filling up. ..haha

Quilter7x 02-27-2010 06:26 PM

My Janome 9000 has the bobbin indicator and I love it. It will continue to sew but give you a message on the screen every so often. If I run out, it's my own fault because by then, I've had at least 3 warnings.

I used a friend's Bernina over the weekend and she didn't have a bobbin indicator on it. I ran out of bobbin thread twice! Now I know that's a feature I can't live without.

OK, I just put the umbrella up ... you can spit now. :D

pittsburgpam 02-27-2010 07:19 PM

Something that is good and bad about my Viking Sapphire. When the bobbin thread is almost out, like just inches left, it loses the tension and it sews badly. I can always tell that the bobbin is about out when I say, "what the ????" because it's screwing up.

This so sounds like something I would do! lol!!!!!!

I don't notice I've run out of bobbin thread until I go to iron the piece so often that I've almost come to expect it! lol!!!!
:) :)

BTDT (been there, done that)

quiltinggrandmaca 02-27-2010 08:09 PM

I have the Viking Sapphire 875 and when the bobbin is getting to within the last few inches it won't sew at all. I love this feature. You sure never run out of bobbin that way.

Boston1954 02-27-2010 08:54 PM

I have been to "run out land" many times. I have been to ALMOST run out land too.

Careful what you wish for......

I am used to the low bobbin indicator being a simple flashing light - and since I am a smart girl, I can figure that in about 6 feet of sewing, the bobbin will run out.

My new machine (Pfaff 2056) has a "low bobbin" message on the display window and I think it also beeps. I only know that the sewing motion comes to a screeching halt. First I have to suffer through 3 stop/start stitches (because I am apparently NOT smart enough to figure out what "low bobbin" means). By this time, I am already frustrated and hit that gas pedal pretty hard - only to have the machine take off like a bat out of hell.....for about 6 inches, when the sewing motion comes to a screeching halt.....

Olivia's Grammy 02-28-2010 04:30 AM

I can pretty much tell by the sound when I've run out of bobbin.

sewjoyce 02-28-2010 07:34 AM

I have the "low" indicator thingie on my Bernina 200 -- I shut that sucker off....

littlehud 02-28-2010 07:17 PM

I would love to have that. It would save me loads of grief.

Lostn51 02-28-2010 07:29 PM

I am always checking my bobbins as I go. In my Model 15 or 66 its not that bad, but when its my 27 its nearly impossible. The bobbin monster will get you everytime on that rascal

vjengels 03-02-2010 05:58 AM

Oh how I hate when that happens! I'm getting better at hearing a change in the sound of my machine.. like tuning into your baby's cry.... so, lately, I've only gone a couple inches before I notice I'm out of thread. I guess I don't get out much, cuz' I didn't know machines came with an indicator... That's fantastic!

sandpat 03-02-2010 06:13 AM

My machine has that indicator and I've turned it off. I hate it! It beeps when I'm about 1/4 from the end of the bobbin..it also beeps when it thinks there is a microscopic piece of thread..or lint...or dust mite..or some other fri^*@ thing that I can't find...so I cured it.....its turned off..

wilma A 03-02-2010 07:23 AM

i have a viking sapphire 870 and when the bobbin is running out it just stops and then you know it is time for a new bobbin.

Ninnie 03-02-2010 07:27 AM

If I had a dollar for everytime this has happened, i sure could go fabric shopping!! LOL

Miss Mona 03-02-2010 07:46 AM

I start with a full bobbin in the bobbin. All the partial bobbins I use for my top thread. Several weeks ago I had dozens of partial bobbins and used them for piecing a quilt. The color doesn't matter when you make a scrappy quilt. When I think I am getting low on the bobbin, I remove it and then finish using it in the top. You would be surprised on how many empy bobbins I now have.

Ilovemydogs 03-02-2010 08:03 AM

I hate when my bobbin gets low. I don't pay attention and then the machine gets all out of whack. DH has learned that I yell at my machine often!

Up North 03-02-2010 09:35 AM

I've called my machine a dumb doo doo more than once but usually it is me that is the doo doo!

dorismae904 03-02-2010 10:15 AM

Never mind the low bobbin light. I want one that goes ding, ding, ding when thread is low so I know I have to change or refill the bobbin. This has happened so many times and I always think, dumb, dumb, dumb.

Ellis' Granny B 03-02-2010 10:17 AM

I am with Wilma A. I have the Sapphire 870 that also stops when the bobbin is too low. I absolutely love it. It is very sensitive and only leaves about 10 inches of thread on the bobbin that I can use for had work or discard.

judi wess 03-02-2010 10:57 AM

My Pfaff Quilt Expression has a low bobbin indicater too. It will not function however if you have the "door" to the bobbin case open. There are several yards of thread left on the bobbin when the warning icon comes on.
A feature that I didn't know I needed when I bought the machine is the needle up/down. Love it.

I was sewing just yesterday, and ran out of bobbin thread too.

wraez 03-02-2010 01:55 PM

I only know of one person who has a low bobbin indicator on her Bernina machine and she says that it tells her AFTER her bobbin is empty! Maybe it is a glitch with her machine OR it is supposed to work that way so you don't keep sewing and sewing b4 you discover the thread is long gone.

warm quilt hugs, sue in CA

Rachel 03-02-2010 02:26 PM

My Bernina does have a low bobbin indicator... however, I have it shut off, because you also have to keep the bobbin area lint free for it to work properly... so not gonna happen... tee hee

peppermint31 03-02-2010 05:04 PM

If I am paying attention, I can hear the machine make a different sound when it runs out too but often times there is other background noise & I don't hear it! I bought my machine used on E-Bay and that is the only feature that doesn't work. I really like the "needle down" feature but have trouble adjusting to the reverse button because it has to be turned on & off. My other machines just had a lever that you held down and when you let go it was back to sewing forward. I have a Pfaff 1471.

shrabar 03-02-2010 05:57 PM

I have Jancome 9000 too ... I love your block could you pleas tell me what the name is Iwould like to make it . Thank You 7 whereare you from? shrabar

rufus2 03-02-2010 06:53 PM

My domestic sewing machine is a Kenmore/Janome and it talks to me as I get to the end of the bobbin. I have never sewn more than 3 to 4 inches before I know its out of bobbin thread. Does anyone else have a machine like this? Rufus2

zz-pd 03-02-2010 09:44 PM

I find out I run out of thread when I sew and it dose not stay together.

Pepita 03-02-2010 10:21 PM

Can you find out if the Brother machine has an override code, or way to input it? I would end up with all those bobbins with just a bit of thread left over!
