Putting the " heavier" blocks, the bottom three, in the center up and down row would give more balance. All of your colors work well and the sashing will make a difference too. Isn't it wonderful that we all have different tastes? Your daughter will love it!

This is going to be a beautiful quilt. I think they all go through that "growing pains" stage for a while (at least they do for me!), where you don't quite like it but can't figure out why.
I really appreciate reading all the advice you've been given as it will be helpful to me too. You've done a lovely job on it, and I can't wait to see the finished quilt! Your DIL will love it. |
You did a wonderful job!
Your money wrench is throwing a monkey wrench into it. Looking at the bottom lay out, try swapping the monkey wrench (churn dash) out with the middle bloc on the third row. See if that helps. that is your only block that doesn't have much red in it and it is throwing it off. Otherwise, you have created a beautiful quilt!!! She will be so happy to get this one.
Many thanks to all of you. Today I appliqued a small blue square on point in the mosaic block. That pulled it together. I'm going to re-do the monkey wrench with red points and a brighter flower in center then move it to a corner. The hearts go to the center. The cross will become a pillow and I'll make a new block for its place. I'll post before and after pics when it's fixed. I will never be able to tell you how much I appreciate the help. Thank you so much!!!

To me it looks like some of the stars needs to be moved around and the heart, X and cross like block moved to break up the points a bit. Hope that makes sense. Other then that it is beautiful. Which 3 block does she not like???

Sashing the blocks will give a different look to them. The sashing will separate each block and keep the designs from fighting with each other.

I'm making a sampler quilt for my DIL. From the beginning it has been a disaster. I only had a few fat quarters, so I had planned to do a lap quilt. She came in one day and said she really wanted it for the bed. Sooooo, I found some matching tonals, and a couple of matching florals and went for 12 blocks. She's OK with the colors. The blocks are finished, but 4 are wrong. Nothing wrong with the way they are sewn, but they don't look right on the design board. I've moved them around til I'm turning blue!! LOL I can get her to come put them in the order she wants, or I can make pillows with the three I hate (one of the four she loves) and make three new blocks that will fit.
I plan to sash with the dark red, make a smaller border with the small flowered print and a wider border in the blue if I can find it. If not, a wider dark red. What would you do? If you can, please rotate this pic to the right, on my design board the heart is in the top left. I'm not good at posting pics. LOL |
All blocks 12". Design board is small so the are overlapping.
Why not add an appliqued border? A vine with hearts and flowers?
You appear to have the squares with the less busy backgrounds lined up. Perhaps if you interspersed these - even checker-board pattern, you may find the design works better. Failing that, some thin sashing and corner stones often marry a sampler together, provided you don't make them dominate. I like the bold colours, so keep up the effort as it looks worthwhile.
I see this has been going a while, but I'll put in my 'two penneth' ...... I would move the kings cross away from its left neighbour, but other than that, I don't think you get a real impression without the sashing. It will be great once that is done.
It looks just fine. I would just be sure that the floral print blocks are separated.
I can see the lighter red blocks are different and do stand out from the darker red blocks.
Have you tried putting these in the corners? Looks like it will still be too small for a bed quilt, looks like you need to make more blocks even with the borders. I am making a queensize quilt and I have 7 X 9 blocks. |
my only thought is switch bottom left with the one above it, but I agree that she should just do the layout. Only other thought is could you do blue corners instead of red on that bottom left one?

Just looking at a glance, My inclination would be to try:
• the 4 X shapes in the corners. • hearts center, second row • star below hearts • pinwheels on either side of the star • diamond top center, • churn dash bottom center • the last two on either side of the hearts (their commonality are the center blocks) This puts the geometry into perspective, distributes the weight, centers the heart, and avoids corner clashes. With your red sash, there will be no corner competition. When we do this in retreats, everyone has a different idea, for different reasons. It all boils down to what you, or your DIL, likes. Well, here is what I had in mind: (only the scan posted upside down) |
I would put the heart in the center and anchor the corners with the 2 x blocks and the star and the diamond. Sashing will probably make a big difference in the way it all looks so try putting your sashing in. Also look at the top laying on a bed as it will be used. I was taught to layout your blocks putting the top the way it will be used eg- hang a wallhanging to place blocks ot lay the top on a bed to place blocks if it is to be a bed quilt. It really does make a difference in the way blocks look.
I'd move the heart piece toward the middle, and spread the blocks with the floral print around more, but actually, there isn't anything wrong with it to tell you truth. It's very nice.
You have four with 'inside' flowers. Try using those to mark the corners. If you hate the one with the large square, consider appliqueing a flower similar to the others, into its middle. Then use it in the center of the layout. Then work the others around, with the heart block in the center top as suggested. Separate the like blocks, such as the pointed ones.
Truthfully, all the blocks are beautiful and once you put the sashing on, I don't think you will have any problem with the layout. It will all go together and will be lovely. |
Second picture.... top row... hearts and red/blue star appear to be smaller blocks. Are they? If so, you might have to add small strips to even out the block sizes.I agree that moving the ones with little flowers around might make a difference. Overall, very pretty.
I would try sashing between the blocks, and see if that is more pleasing to you.
They are all pretty. I would move the hearts to center, break up the ones with the flowers and move the red 2-color to the top left and see how that looks. Just my opinion.
I think that the blocks are beautiful. The one that stands out the most is the heart block. Because it is rounded and the rest pointed, I would use the heart block as the focal point and put it in the middle (or as close to the middle as possible). the rest of the blocks are great as they are.
I would leave all those blocks, just move them around to break up the points.
Blocks are pretty, I might get the stars away from the star and maybe add sashing.
I don't think there is anything wrong with the blocks themselves....they just need their placement tweaked a bit....I think the 3 on the bottom ....the ones that have larger areas of one color....need to be split up.....surround them more with blocks that have little pieces of color....it will tone them down and then they won't stand out so much
Sashing would help in the way they look. How were the blocks placked on the digarm with the patterns. It reminds me of the block of the month setting.

She absolutely loves the hearts!! The bottom three are the ones I don't think fit (on the second photo) I'll admit, I'm ready to be finished on this and I was looking for blocks that went together easily. I like the idea of breaking up the points I'll try that in the morning. I don't think she would notice anything wrong. But it would drive me nuts!! :)
The blocks and colors are fine. What is looking 'off' to you is the fact that you have one block with curves, and the rest are straight lines. I would make 3 more blocks with straight lines and put the heart block in the center. With your sashing separating the blocks, it will be beautiful.
I'd replace the corners on the bottom left square with blue so that it has both red and blue and I think you'll like ti better.
I think when you sash the blocks and put a border on it you will be surprised how pretty it is. Post a picture when it is done.
I think you did a great job and all that I can see is that you need to preview the top with the blocks moved around.
If you have a digital camera take and move the blocks around and after each move then take a picture. After you feel that you have done all the different configurations that you feel possible go back and look at the photos and see which appeals best to you. Taught this in classes when I was teaching and all my students loved the idea as they could never seem to remember from one move to another. Good luck and I am sure that she will love whatever layout you choose |
I like to balance my corners - i.e., all 4 corners are blocks with little background and then fill in the rest. Also I take a photo when the blocks are laid out and see how it looks with respect to values. I've found that relying on value vs color is very helpful.
There are so many different opinions! Your blocks are are beautiful; I don't think you should remake any; just move them around. Can't wait to see the finished layout.

I agree with those who say --add your sashing now--it is really hard (for me) to imagine what it is going to look like without actually seeing it put together. I, too, would put the heart block in the center. You might try making diagonal rows of blocks with similar values--when you look at it, it will provide some continuity for the eye and still spread out one's visual impression. Going to be a beautiful quilt. Keep working!
There is only one applique block -- giving it a place of honor creates a focus for the quilt. Sashing or a different setting would separate the blocks a little and give the quilt a little more open look. |
I would move the heart block towards the center as well. I'd also break up the bottom row. I like your color choice.
put the sashing on the board also it will make a big difference
WOW I had a few ideas - but everyone else beat me to it! The only block that stick out to me is the hearts one (I vote pillow and make one more block for the quilt) and the only other thing I feel strong about are the 4 blocks with floral prints - either group them in the center or split them up for the 4 corners.
It is a pretty quilt - and I bet she loves it. |
I would make a pillow out of the heart.
It just doesn't seem to fit with all the geometric squares. Other than that I think with sashing it will be great. |
