I need help, but I'm picky

Help!

Our guild is making blocks for a lady that has been so very helpful to all of us for many years. She likes chickens, so we are making chicken blocks. We are all supposed to come up with one of our own, so there is no common pattern. Needs to finish 12" sq.

Does anyone no where I can find one? I can't do paper piecing, and not really fond of applique.

Many thanks to any ideas.

Sherry

I did a quick google search, but as I suspected, all the patterns that I saw were either PP'd or applique. Since you don't want to do either of those, I can only think of pre-printed fabric with chickens on it that are fussy cut and pieced into a block.

Saphire 02-03-2012 01:29 PM

Thanks, Suzzanne. I'm afraid you might be right. and to think how many times I have walked past so many cute chicken fabrics! I could kick myself.

sweet 02-03-2012 01:30 PM

There are quite a few fabrics with chickens out there. Maybe you could incorporate one of them into a block....

Here's a link to one: http://www.rossvillequilts.com/cgi-b...rooster1220_44

you can go to http://www.quiltshops.com/ and search for chicken sale and come up with a lot to peruse and satisfy that perfect chicken urge! (Maybe even a nest with eggs?????) Luck to ya! :)

I recently saw some really cute chicken and rooster fabrics on ebay when I typed in fabric panels. They had some blocks that would be really cute. Good luck! m

I just bought some cute chicken fabric online and you can order just a 1/2 yard. Here is the link in you like the fabric. You could fussy cut a chicken and put a border around it????

Saphire 02-03-2012 02:24 PM

Oh, char634w, that is the fabric I was looking at. It's definitely a front runner if I can't find a chicken block to piece.

Just sayin'.

on ebay

patdesign 02-05-2012 06:36 AM

Consider the pastel pencils tutorial posted here last year and do a center block with a chicken or rooster in it, you could trace one from something, then surround it with log cabin strips to get to the 12 inches. It would be quick and a showstopper!:)

gardnergal970 02-05-2012 07:00 AM

Check out the picture section today. There's a quilt there called Chunky Chickens. Really cute.

sparkys_mom 02-05-2012 07:00 AM

Look at the Funky Chicken quilt here on the board. Yes, there is a little applique in it, but not much.http://www.quiltingboard.com/picture...p-t178070.html

This site has a BOM of Funky Chickens patterns, you could easily make any of them your own. If you want to PM me I have been collecting chicken blocks.

Take a simple coloring page of a chicken and do a redwork chicken! Luann

Try Pam bono's site. she has lots of good piecing patterns for animals. I made ducks one time from her pattern and it was really cute

urgodschild2 02-05-2012 08:38 AM

My daughter's MIL loves chickens but only the Hens not the Roosters. She has several chickens in a coop on her land in Australia. So does the lady like hens or Roosters or doesn't care???? If she likes hens like my DDMIL.....hens are hard to find on material.

maxnme01 02-05-2012 10:28 AM

I found this pieced chicken block. Hope it fits your requirements.

Don't have a chicken pattern but sure loved looking at these. I have bookmarked this just in case I ever need one!

justflyingin 02-05-2012 10:38 AM

I like that last one the best, but if I loved chickens, I would love some chicken FABRIC and make something--make a square in a square using the chicken fabric. Or a star, using the chicken fabric as the center.

This is a free PDF download: http://www.accuquilt.com/go-folk-art...tern-free.html. I love Accuquilts FREE patterns, as well as the ones they have for sale! Please check them out!

I just saw it on tv yesterday.

http://fatcatpatterns.com is doing a Bom with chickens the first two are really cute. Try them.

Anna.425 02-05-2012 12:46 PM

I may be mistaken however I thought you were asking for chicken patterns rather than chicken fabric. I found one that does not need to be PP'd or appliqued. See attachment.

I have PM'd an excel spreadsheet that shows how I would make the chicken. I have also included the link where you can buy a pattern. I rarely purchase patterns however I am always willing to give credit for where I see a pattern that I try to replicate. I also included a picture of the original quilt. My favorite chicken is the one that they made with black fabric with white polka dots.

try looking on Nancy's notions, they might have it,

Why not try a redwork block? It will add variety to the blocks. If you don't want to do it by hand, Bernina have an embroidery disc with chickens and roosters. I'm sure other brands are available as well.

TeresaR 02-05-2012 05:40 PM

There is a post on here that is titled Funky Chunky Chicken. They are really cute. Check it out.

fmhall2 02-05-2012 10:31 PM

In today's post under Pictures Barboo117 has a cute chicken quilt. You could probably use her pattern and make a block. I don't think it would be hard to look at her picture and make your own block from it.

mimistutz 02-06-2012 05:59 AM

I did a cubbie chicks wall hanging (applique) and found some really cute fabric for the binding, the pattern was chicken wire, maybe that would work, still related. I think it came in brown and black "wire", background was white/ off white.

sewmorethings 02-06-2012 06:11 AM

What about copying a chicken pattern from a coloring book and use CRAYOLA crayons to color it, no applique and no pp just make sure you put a heavy layer of white on the places you want to color then use the colors to finish the design with shading where needed. When done use a paper towel to cover the design and place an iron on the paper towel to remove the wax but leave the colors on the fabric. If you want to outline your design use a fabric marker with a super fine tip. We have a lady in our guild that is doing one with this method and it is gorgeous. She is doing embroidery on the outlines of the design. I can't wait to try this myself. Good luck what ever you decide to do.

there are some great chicken fabrics on spoonflower! granted they are more expensive than most quilting fabrics, but you don't have to buy more than a fat quarter. :) Here are some I saw that I loved!
