One day I asked my 94 year old mother (with a super memory) if they used quilting thread at their quilting bees. She said they had for a while, but in the 1950s the thread got to be such poor quality that they switched to using doubled sewing thread. Go with whatever works best for you.

There is no right answer to this. Are you quilting by hand, domestic sewing machine, or longarm? Do you prefer cotton or silk, rayon or polyester? Do you want your threads to shine or blend into the fabric? Do you like variegated or solid? Are you stitching in the ditch or making a pattern across the block? Do you want the quilting to show or be invisible? Even after all those questions are answered, it still comes down to personal preference, availability, and your budget.

Check out Superior Threads. They have all kinds of different threads, for quilting, piecing and decorative stitching. All the threads I used have been wonderful, and their service is great.

nhweaver 03-01-2011 08:37 AM

I am a very frugal quilter, and with a limited budget, I buy any name brand (mettler, coats clark, etc).thread at auction and yard sales, and use it all for machine piecing. I stay away from wal mart, and off brand threads. My Janome likes all threads, except for Wal Mart and K mart, and other dusty wrapped threads. I hand top stitch with quilting thread, and I run it through bees wax to add to the stiffness. any good brand works for me. I don't hand piece with the thinner sulkies though, they work better for me in the machine. I use neutral colors in greys and tans for most machine and hand piecing, but if I am doing a dark quilt, I use whatever is closest dark color.

I live in a rural area also, so I buy most of my material and thread online. I buy most of my quilting thread from Connecting threads including hand quilting thread.

suzette1954 03-01-2011 09:49 AM

I hand quilt and use Hand quilting thread. Any store that sells a display of threads will have it or any online site with threads sells it.

Arleners 03-01-2011 10:42 AM

I use thread from Connecting Threads. I don't have any problems with them and the prices are reasonable. I also LOVE King Tut thread, mostly for their color choices. I like to use variable colors when doing the actual quilting. I usually stock up on King Tut thread when I go to a quilt show.

Keepsake Quilting, bar none!

pdcakm 03-01-2011 11:10 AM

like dunster and nhweaver both said. after it is all said and done, it is personal choice. all of the brands named by others are good quality and will get the job done. i personally use whichever of the good quality names i can get on sale.

Emjay 03-01-2011 01:39 PM

I like Mettler. Does anyone have any comments on this thread.
Connecting Threads seems to have a good selection for you.
If the others on this line like Mettler, why not just insert "Mettler" in the search engine and see who handles it. I believe there is another resource, but I cannot remember who it is at this time.

Sosew 03-01-2011 01:39 PM

Try Superior Threads or Connecting Threads. O have Connecting Threads' current catalog and they're having a sale on thread now.

Are you wanting thread for machine quilting or hand quilting? there is quite a difference

dede 03-01-2011 03:30 PM

I use Egyptian cotton thread from Connecting Threads... very reasonably priced compared to most threads and it works very well. The last time I purchased it, 1200 yard spools were $2.49 each... WalMart sells thread for $4.96 for the same sized spool. Thread has become very expensive.

quilt3311 03-01-2011 04:26 PM

Connecting Threads for cotton thread(piecing)
Marathon threads for poly for thread painting
Superior threads for quilting threads

MillieMoseley 03-01-2011 04:47 PM

I love connecting threads

jitkaau 03-01-2011 05:40 PM

Hand quilting thread is coated with a wax- like substance that helps with pulling it through the fabric and also assists with durability. It should not be used in the machine as it will gum up the tension discs. Mettler hand quilting thread is the only one that I know that you can also use in the machine.
There are many good brands for quilting cotton: Gutterman, Mettler, Aurifil, Superior, Wonderfil, Madiera, are just some of the brands I have used and they are all OK.
Try the Superior Thread company:

Connecting thread is great.

donnalynett 03-01-2011 07:16 PM

Connecting Threads....is very nice thread and the most reasonably priced and the shipping doesn't kill you.

VernaL 03-01-2011 07:43 PM

I mostly use Superior Threads too. I especially like their "Bottom Line" thread for the bobbin. I don't remember if you can buy it directly from Superior, but I know Softexpressions sells it and has mail order. They have almost everything you would ever need. They do not sell much fabric, but their tools, books and other supplies are endless!

JEM65 03-01-2011 07:50 PM

I use Auri-fil 50 wt for piecing on my machine. I bought it at my local quilt shop and they recommend it. I also use Coats & Clark specialty hand quilting thread.

I like Gutermann (?sp), Aurfil, any Egyptian cotton.
Each of us has our own preference and some have machines that perfer one over the other...

But my one suggestion would be...don't waste money on the "cheap" thread that are often found in bulk near the register. As with most items, "you get what you pay for."

Can't resist commenting on Bayside Quilting. I've been to their stores in Olympia, WA. and although small by Fabric Depot standards... they are loaded with the neatest fabric.
Plus, I love going in and hearing music from the 50's! Really nice people and although I've never ordered anything online, I'm sure it will be handled with as much care as the in store people do with their walk in customers.

(...and no, they didn't ask or pay me to say the above.)

garysgal 03-01-2011 11:03 PM

I got some quilting thread at Walmart, I think. It was a little heavier than regular thread, and I needed it for hand quilting. Otherwise, I buy thread from Connectingthreads.com.

Up4BigChal 03-02-2011 04:53 AM

Superior Threads the best and sign up for their newsletter so you get great tips every month.

Tinabodina 03-02-2011 04:55 AM

I bought some on Ebay. Since it is hard for me to get out, I buy a lot on line. Try Hancock Fabrick, JoAnn's too.

Calzo 03-02-2011 04:57 AM

I like Gutermann thread and buy it online from Charles Zarit. http://www.charleszarit.com/index.htm

They sell all of the colors in 1,100 yard spools for $2.50. Joanns regular price for a 500 yard spool is over $5.00.

lass 03-02-2011 05:25 AM

I like connecting thread. Good prices and the thread is good as well.

katlady 03-02-2011 07:36 AM

Superior Threads, Connecting threads both are very good.

mjsylvstr 03-02-2011 09:09 AM

Mettler Silk Finish 100% cotton thread...machine or hand quilting...doesn't make near the lint that Connecting Threads thread does...but I'm just sayin'.

jbrother 03-02-2011 01:51 PM

Try www.superior.com. They sell cotton, polyester, blend and silk thread for quilting. Earlier this week, they were selling 220 spools for half price. Do not know if they still are. Also, they have a great e-newsletter. Alex Anderson also has a line of threads through them.

Mended Heart 03-03-2011 05:48 AM

another great spot online to try for threads and other quilting notions also is sewthankful.com. They have lots of name brands and lots of sales. I've gotten quite a few things there.

bonniebusybee 03-03-2011 08:52 PM

Haven't read all the replies, so this may be redundant, but I like Guttermann's special quilting thread. (This is for hand-quilting; I don't do long-arm.) I get it at Jo-Ann's, either nearby or on the internet, when they're having 40%-off sales, or I have one of their multitude of discount coupons. You can google them. Good luck!
