i use connecting threads longarm quilting thread, it's wonderful and i don't know why you couldn't piece with it too. they also have lots of nice fabrics, over $50 gets free shipping and have wonderful customer service
|
There is hand-quilting thread which is different than machine thread. Gutterman thread is my choice for machine piecing and hand-quilting. Joann.com frequently has sales of 40 or 50% off their threads and also, coupons you can use on-line for regular-priced items that are not on sale. There are TONS of on-line quilting shops available. If you plan to hand-quilt, make sure the thread says for hand quilting, as it has a different finish on it and a bit firmer.
I have also heard good things about Connecting Threads, but haven't tried them. |
could someone tell me....what brand of quilting thread is better
|
My LQS is a fan of connecting threads thread. Their fabric prices are good, too. I've seen the same spool of thread for $5.99 that connectingthreads.com sells for $2.96. I'm not sure I'm sold on the thread, but that's just me. The rest of the quilting world likes it.

You do not specify if you are looking for hand quilting thread or machine quilting thread. Also many people refer to thread as "quilting" thread when they really want thread for piecing. Anyway, here are a bunch of good sources for thread and superior threads has tons of good free info on what threads are best for what job.
http://www.superiorthreads.com/ http://www.redrockthreads.com/ I really like Isacord embroidery thread for machine quilting and I have ordered from these guys. http://www.sewforless.com/category/1...ord_Thread/c88 My favorite hand quilting thread is Valdani. My LQS carries it but I did find this on line source http://www.thethreadexchange.com/miv...FcG77QodL3bFBA |
thread art on ebay love it!
|
I love Connecting Threads 50wt cotton or the even thinner generic poly serger thread best for piecing. www.connectingthreads.com
My favorites for machine quilting are the Rainbows (poly) and King Tut (cotton) lines by Superior Threads, and I love any of Thread Art's 40wt embroidery threads, too. Their prices won't make you keel over in sticker shock, either - I've never had it act up in any machine, from my 1894 Singer to my Futura embroidery machine. I just got some YLI Soft Touch 60wt for hand applique from Heirlooms Forever and it's SUPER nice, but I like the finished appearance of Bottom Line from Superior for hand applique better than anything else I've tried. Superior So Fine and YLI Soft Touch behave better, but Bottom Line is invisible or darn close to invisible. YLI Silk is invisible or nearly so, but it's a pain in the neck to handle, especially to anchor. Soft Touch - silk finish 60wt cotton: http://www.sews.com/notions/threads/...softtouch.html Bottom Line by Superior: http://www.superiorthreads.com/shop/...e/description/ |

http://www.superiorthreads.com/ Do you buy the type L bobbins? Are those like class 15's? I've been buying the type A bobbins from ThreadArt and I really love them, but I would like to find an option that has matte thread in them. The ThreadArt pre-wound bobbins have a very fine shiny thread, which is great for some things, but I'd like to get some bobbin thread that mimics cotton in appearance. :) |
I just got hooked on Aurifil. Candace of QB gave us the tip that Tristan Threads of BC Canada has it on clearance. It's still expensive, but WORTH it. I would never have tried it if not for the sale. Maybe order with pals and split shipping? Cotton prices are going up, so I think buying on sale now is wise. Also like Masterpiece by Superior Threads for piecing and have heard good things about their King Tut and Perfect Quilter quilting threads. Have heard good things about Connecting Threads, but haven't tried them. I'm sitting on an Aurifil stockpile! Of course, never use hand quilting thread in a machine.

Forgot link: www.tristan.bc.ca

How do you all pay for thread.?
37.50 for 5 spools to me is crazy. I've always wondered myself which thread was the best. |
Connecting Threads. They have everything, including great customer service.
|
HI,Dew Drop you know I get mine at Pauls.Did you find the pattern that you were looking for?Have you checked The Back Porch?
|
polyparrot, thank you for the link to Bottom Line. It looks like it's just what I am looking for.
|
I love quilting with sulky embroider thread, I do all my quilting on the machine. I started out using quilting thread but found it to be heavy and did not like the look.
|
I've vote for Connecting Threads also....they offer a lot of stuff and their shipping isn't outrageous.

i like mettler thread with 100% silk finish...i often order on line at http://www.craftconn.com...my only caution is that if it isn't in stock it will take a long time and they have a $10 minimum order so make sure you purchase that much even if it's on back order.

mettler has a waxed hand quilting thread ( strong )500 yards about $8.50 YLI has a waxed hand q. 1200 yds. that is excellent for about the same price. John James is my favorite hand quilt needles |
I HAVE TO TRAVEL AT LEAST 38 MILES TO BUY A SPOOL OF THREAD.
