I am taking quiltmama's and those likeminded advice. I went to town today and bought fusible pellan and black batting. The fusible interfacing seems to make lots of difference in the feel and weight of the black.
Many thanks to all of you that responded. I hope I won't regret my decision. I also bought the backing today. Will plan to post a pic of it tomorrow... |

That was my thought also........ Black batting. |
If nothing else, I would put a piece of black muslin behind the whole top before I put the batting in.

One time when I had this issue, I used a black paintstik behind the quilt top's fabric (the underside) to "color it in" and heat set it. Washed it carefully prior to quilting to make sure all was well and proceeded with quilting and it worked out just fine. I couldn't use the black batting because there were areas of material in white that were thin and it would have showed through. So I got the idea of the "paintstik" and it worked wonders for me!

Black batting will help on the area of the thin black fabric but might give an overall dark look you might not want . You can leave it as is and do at bit of heavy quilting on those black triangles or cut out a black and cream batting "quilt" strip for that border to match which would be the most work or just use blacking batting on that border and make just the cream fabric darker.

If it were me-- I would take it apart and replace the black fabric.. It is going to wear out faster than the others, and will have to be replaced sooner or later. it would be easier to do it sooner. I have repaired a few worn quilts and it isn't fun.
