Thanks for the responses...I think I'm going to remake rows 3 & 4 as I had originally planned and put the orange between the gray stripes. That seems to be the consensus here, too.

Can we see what it would look like without the row that has the orange stripe?

I like the softened look of the mint green and gray without the orange. The orange just distracts IMO.
|
I would make it the way your daughter wanted it...but add in a more intense shade of the green or gray to give it the pop.
When making a quilt for my little granddaughter, I decided to make a few executive decisions....they didn't go over well with DIL.... |
I like it, but you'd better ask your daughter if she likes it!!
|
I have to agree that this orange is just way too bright for this quilt. I do understand your desire to add the pop of color, but since the two calm colors were requested, I would check with your daughter before adding such a jarring POP to it.

Dunster said just what I was going to -- I love orange and use it in quilts often, but I'm not loving it here.
However, that row with the orange on the back would be a fun surprise. RSt |

I like it just the way it is the orange really pops and the zig zag makes great roads for a boy to drive his cars and trucks on.

Take out the orange. It looks like an afterthought. without it, you have abeautiful low volume quilt, whichit sonds like what your daughter wants.
|
i would like to see it with a yellow instead of the orange
|
The gray, green, and white are lovely together.
Some things are much better without a 'pop' - which in some cases comes across more like a big crashing BANG! Sort of like having a cymbal bang in the middle of a lullabye. Disruptive. By the way,I am a fan of the color orange. But not in thatquilt. |
Girlfriend, I love it. If you change it, please post another picture. My daughter wanted the chevron pattern for her baby quilt also. I did it in graduated shades of blue with white. Even though I don't care for the chevron, it turned out very nice. I would consider making another in that pattern.

I felt that just those colors would be too close in value, so I decided to add orange to make a "pop" of color. Originally, I had planned to put the orange stripe between the gray stripes on the 4th row down, but ended up making a mistake and putting it in the middle of the green stripes in the middle row. The blocks are not sewn together yet, so I could remake the 3rd and 4th rows: 3rd row would be green and white just like rows 1 & 5, and then the 4th row would be gray with orange in the middle. I could salvage the current 3rd and 4th rows by putting them on the back. I'm posting a picture of the current, but unplanned, layout and I'd really LIKE YOUR FEEDBACK!!! |
If you go with the mom's requested colors you'll have a lovely modern, calming quilt. Adding such a bright orange is more than a pop of color, it's more like a BANG! How about just a touch of a bit lighter orange in the backing instead?

Sorry about the "sic" it was supposed to say "since." :)

I think very pale baby quilts are the newest thing now...I found this out when I made a bright yellow, orange and turquoise baby quilt for a baby shower, everything she got was pale, pale pale.

I have to agree with most everyone; leave out the orange. If your daughter told you the mint and gray, just do the mint and gray. I have been on the receiving end of things that the maker thought needed "just a little more" and I ended up hating it and stashing it in a closet.

Personally, I would leave out the orange, or use a soft sherbet shade. Last year I made a surprise wedding quilt for our niece. Her mother told me her favorite colors were sage green and gray. That was a challenge in color value, so used varying shades of both colors with white. It turned out beautifully and is one of my favorites.
