I need your opinions, please...

My daughter is pregnant and is due in June. She asked that the baby quilt be made in mint green and gray.

I felt that just those colors would be too close in value, so I decided to add orange to make a "pop" of color.

Originally, I had planned to put the orange stripe between the gray stripes on the 4th row down, but ended up making a mistake and putting it in the middle of the green stripes in the middle row.

The blocks are not sewn together yet, so I could remake the 3rd and 4th rows: 3rd row would be green and white just like rows 1 & 5, and then the 4th row would be gray with orange in the middle.

I could salvage the current 3rd and 4th rows by putting them on the back.

I'm posting a picture of the current, but unplanned, layout and I'd really LIKE YOUR FEEDBACK!!!

Can we see what it would look like without the row that has the orange stripe?

Jennalyn 02-09-2014 05:05 PM

Hmm! While it looks neat as you've sewn it by mistake, I feel that the orange may be more attractive sandwiched into a gray row rather than a mint one as you'd originally planned.

Jeanne S 02-09-2014 05:12 PM

I agree that I would like the orange paired up with gray better. Lovely quilt!! If you weren't totally set on orange for your pop of color, I think a bright teal would look good on this quilt too.

aorlflood 02-09-2014 05:13 PM

I don't have a green/white row made up to slip in there. Sorry. :(

Gilly 02-09-2014 05:19 PM

I love it, I would leave it!

alikat110 02-09-2014 05:23 PM

Think I would put it b/w grey. Love your design!

playswithcolor 02-09-2014 05:24 PM

Since you asked, if it were mine I would use a softer orange. More like orange sherbet. The intensity of the orange is too much and it's all your eye is drawn to.

aorlflood 02-09-2014 05:28 PM

Thanks for the responses...I think I'm going to remake rows 3 & 4 as I had originally planned and put the orange between the gray stripes. That seems to be the consensus here, too.

nvb50 02-09-2014 05:35 PM

I would not put the orange in the quilt. I like the way it would look without that stripe that sticks out way too much.

I like just the grey and mint. Don't care for the orange

iowabsklover 02-09-2014 05:38 PM

I like just the grey and mint togetherness. Don't care for the orange

IrishNY 02-09-2014 06:12 PM

I like it a lot without the orange. The soft gray and mint looks very modern.

Neesie 02-09-2014 06:23 PM

I would first ask your daughter if she wants orange 'pop' in her quilt. She may be wanting something more soothing and relaxing, since she asked specifically for mint green and gray, rather than something bright.

MargaretH 02-09-2014 06:48 PM

I do not like the orange in it.

Mrs Finch 02-09-2014 07:09 PM

I think use more orange, and orange binding too.

tanisha 02-09-2014 07:12 PM

I love the color pop! I think between the grey or mint is just fine! If it was me, I'd leave it.

Halo 02-09-2014 07:19 PM

To me, (even though I love orange) the orange is way to bright to contrast with the gray & green. I really like it without the orange, but if you feel it needs it, I would go with a lighter shade. Love the pattern you are doing in this quilt. I would also ask the person that ask for these colors before adding anything more. She may not want the brightness in the quilt.

stillclock 02-09-2014 09:34 PM

that orange is so violent. i would not use it at all.

sorry.

aileen

DOTTYMO 02-09-2014 10:51 PM

I would ask your daughter, she will have ti live with it.

Gay 02-10-2014 01:23 AM

sorry, but I do not like the orange at all, especially for a tiny baby. It hurts my eyes. Could you use a darker mint for that pop of colour? I agree you should check with your daughter.

Sandygirl 02-10-2014 04:10 AM

Listen to your daughters' request. I don't like the orange. Stay with her desired colors. It is pretty. I like orange as a color but in this quilt, too distracting IMHO.

sandy

annie123 02-10-2014 04:33 AM

I think the grey and green alone are perfect but if you want another color how about a soft yellow? I do not like the orange. You could make another quilt with all bright colors to use the orange.

scrapinmema 02-10-2014 05:50 AM

I like the idea of orange in the quilt but with the pastels feel the orange you are using draws the eye to it and you forget about the other colors. What does your daughter think of the orange?

michelleoc 02-10-2014 06:00 AM

Personally, I'd go without the orange. I think it draws the eye away too much. That being said, I never would have thought mint and gray together. It looks terrific!

Billi 02-10-2014 06:19 AM

I really like your pattern. The mint and gray is really pretty together I do not care for the orange it's just to strong and it completely changes the feel of the quilt.

If this was a commissioned quilt would you just change it because you thought it needed it? The client should always have the final say even if the client is family and your not getting paid. You did agree to make a quilt for her in her colors. Once this is done you can make another quilt for your new grand baby in any color you want. It never hurts to have multiple baby quilts and blankets.

I agree with halo, I would like it without the orange , or a lighter shade. Love the other colors and pattern.

dunster 02-10-2014 07:01 AM

I love the orange. I love it with the green. I love it anywhere. I think the quilt will be diminished without it. But... daughters will be daughters, and they think they know what they want. Could you possibly make a 2-sided quilt, one side with the orange stripe in it (just what you have) and the other without? Then you can put the orange side out when you hold the baby, and she can hide it on the inside (if that's what she wants) while she holds the baby, everyone will be happy, and the quilt will have a special meaning for the two of you...and for the baby when he/she gets older. A reminder of the grandma who has a bit of flair for the dramatic.

Orange is my favorite color also. But, if the orange stays I would soften it. To the original question, between the greys is my choice. Like one person mentioned, a teal would be nice instead of orange but changes the whole concept of "pop." You asked for our opinions ;-)

Ellietow 02-10-2014 07:24 AM

I really like the gray and mint..but the orange seems out of place to me...it doesn't look like it fits. Yes, see what your daughter says.

Annie68 02-10-2014 07:28 AM

I would take the orange out completely, love the mint green and grey.

Annie Pearl 02-10-2014 07:35 AM

I like the mint and gray alone. I'm not an orange fan and I think it draws away from the other colors. I agree, I would ask your daughter she probably knows just what she wants.

kuntryquilter 02-11-2014 03:41 AM

I would do what my daughter asked. After all she is the one you are making the quilt for.

Gerbie 02-11-2014 04:07 AM

You ask- Personally I don't like the orange in this quilt- I think it really takes away from the other two colors. But I don't care too much for adding pop colors either. I you must add another color make it a softer color perhaps a light orchid to go with the soft mint and gray. Orchid and mint go well together maybe light mauve I personally like the grey and green, perhaps you could add another color for the binding. I think I would ask daughter and see what she thinks. I love mint green for babies.
Our quilting group did our annual challenge quilt and it was to be black and white with a pop color. I had more trouble doing this quilt, because to me a black and white quilt is just that, black and white with no other color. I finally added burnt orange and gave it to my son for Christmas - big U-TX. fan and this worked out o.k.

I agree. The orange is too intense. The contrast of the mint and gray is very pretty.

callen 02-11-2014 04:24 AM

I too, think that the orange dominates the quilt a little too much. Very pretty quilt in those "soft" colours & if you really wanted orange, I think I would choose a softer, more muted shade. Just MHO.

quilter2theend 02-11-2014 04:32 AM

I have to agree with other quilters here, the orange is just to stark compared to the other colors, can you substitute a softer pastel orange?

sewnsewsue 02-11-2014 04:38 AM

I think it would be way prettier without the orange. It would be soft and pretty!

I agree. The orange just seems to jump out and grab you, I think not soft enough for a baby.

I agree with this, I do not have the ability to visualize what a quilt will look like until it finished, have made mistakes with colors. I did add orange to a quilt, thinking it would be more lively but after it was finished I realized it overwhelmed the quilt, it would have been better without it.
