quilt1950 06-04-2011 01:57 PM

for today.

I'm just sewing rows together, simple blocks. I've got the seams pressed so that they nest. But, the seams WILL NOT match properly.

Tomorrow has got to be better.

Dina 06-04-2011 02:00 PM

I am so glad you are not quitting for good! You are one smart cookie to quit for today. Those seams will match up tomorrow. :)

sueisallaboutquilts 06-04-2011 02:00 PM

Good idea. Tomorrow WILL be better :)

Jennifer22206 06-04-2011 02:09 PM

that happens to everyone! We all have days. Tomorrow will be better.

blueangel 06-04-2011 02:09 PM

There is always another day.

katier825 06-04-2011 02:14 PM

Do you pin? Even when they nest nicely, I still pin. Works better for me.

deenatoo 06-04-2011 02:25 PM

Tomorrow will be a better day!!

cjomomma 06-04-2011 02:40 PM

I have had a few of those days. Take your break and try again tomorrow.

Raggiemom 06-04-2011 02:44 PM

I feel for you--everything I tried to on two different machines screwed up today and I may have to take the 6600 in for service. I'm hoping tomorrow is a better day! For both of us...

I go To The Sea To Breathe 06-04-2011 02:46 PM

I thought you were giving up. Last week I had to do that, and i think it helped a lot....good luck

VickyS 06-04-2011 02:49 PM

Some days you just have to do what you have to do! Boy, I'm there now and it's been hard letting my project stay in the WIP pile instead of the DONE pile. But the time off has helped and I'm falling in love with the pattern and the quilt all over again as I start back in on it.

Don't expect it to be resolved overnight. My issues have lasted almost a year but the time off allowed me to get my skills more fine-tuned and my patience back.

Good luck! Let us know when you do get back into that pattern. In the meantime, start something else that doesn't have matching seams, to get the bad taste out of your system :)

Holice 06-04-2011 02:52 PM

go back to analyze to find out why they don't match.
Is is because the pieces were not cut accurately.
Are you seam inconsistent.
Find out what is wrong so you can correct it.
Don't leave it to chance.
It happens and there is a reason

Lori S 06-04-2011 02:59 PM

Some days just are not meant to be sewing days, whenit happens just step away from the machine... its not personal!

booklady 06-04-2011 03:20 PM

tomorrow can always be better!

mamaw 06-04-2011 03:55 PM

Pin on both sides of each seam....works for me. Good luck!

debcavan 06-04-2011 03:59 PM

I use to use what were called "quilting pins". They were too thick and would throw my well matched seams off. I now use thin pins. I hope you have a better day tomorrow

Jingle 06-04-2011 04:33 PM

I pin so that the needle reaches the pin before it reaches the intersection. I don't pin on the seam, about 1/8" before it. Usually works for me. I try to get them to match, after the third time I give up.

hawk 06-04-2011 04:45 PM

I agree with the pin idea. I use long thin pins and pin right before the seam to make sure they don't shift, even when they nest together. Last night I cut 4 WOF strips, sewed them together, and realized I had made 6.5 inch blocks and they were supposed to be 4.5. Wanted to slap myself with my ruler! Time to take a break and start over. Happens to us all. Ah, the joys of unsewing. :P

JUNEC 06-04-2011 04:47 PM

Tomorrow is always a better day than the day before

Prism99 06-04-2011 07:25 PM

When this happens, I use a tiny dot of Elmer's white school glue in the seam and then iron it to make a glue "pin". This doesn't shift the way pins sometimes do.

Really....hmm.

BETTY62 06-04-2011 09:36 PM

You scared me there. Quilters should never quit.

craftybear 06-04-2011 09:51 PM

tomorrow will be better, take care and don't give up

Yooper32 06-05-2011 02:58 AM

At least, you are wise enough to quit. Me, I go ahead and undo and then do the same stupid thing again and agian. I am learning though. Put it up and try again another day.

star619 06-05-2011 03:35 AM

At least quilting is more forgiving than gardening. When I hit a dry spell, due to life interfering with my plans, the quilts-to-be quietly sat & waited. The garden died.
It'll all work out!
Debbie

stitchengramie 06-05-2011 04:18 AM

When I read "I quit" I thought that you were giving up on quilting. It is nice to know that you are not.

Have a great day,

Mary

I pin at every seam and then ease in the extra between the seams. I may use 6-8 pins to an inch if I have to.

Judi in Ohio 06-05-2011 06:14 AM

I just can't quit. I won't let it get the better of me. I'll work on it til I figure out why. That drop of Elmers may be what you need, but what you need to figure out is why? Seams fit together when nested properly, so something is wrong. Really look at it. My eyes just slide over things sometimes and when I really look I can figure it out.
Come on, you can do it!!!!
Judi

I get frustrated with myself all the time. I should have given up a long time, but I love to quilt to much. :-D

flowerjoy 06-05-2011 07:07 AM

I am pretty new to quilting (working on my 2nd quilt now) and that describes most of my seams ... LOL. I am just excited I actually completed a quilt. Take a day of rest ... but remember, you must already be a very good quilter.

EagarBeez 06-05-2011 07:10 AM

someone on this board suggested silk pins, they are very, very slim and long. You can also sew over them. They are great. It's a good thing to walk away when getting frustrated. Just remember no ones perfect and if you can't see the seams being off while riding by on a horse. Don't be hard on yourself

GGinMcKinney 06-05-2011 08:09 AM

Pin on both sides of the seam not in the seam. Works for me, too!

lynnsim 06-05-2011 08:14 AM

I'm sure after a break, they will be perfect. I also pin for all my seams; takes longer, but that is only way I can get my seams to match. They're not always perfect, but I've decided I'm not perfect, lol.

JulieTN 06-05-2011 08:18 AM

Best time to stop is right when you are having one of these moments. Take heart, it happens to all of us. Fabric gets cut, and the pieces are rather small, giving the yarns (what the thread in the fabrics are called) a way to stretch. YUCK!

It all will be better today - because Scarlett O'Hara told us it would be!!!!

cathyvv 06-05-2011 08:20 AM

I use washable glue to match seams. It really helped me with accuracy, plus pins are very hard for me to handle.

But, as others point out, sometimes you're just having one of THOSE days...

caspharm 06-05-2011 08:35 AM

Breaks are always good.

mimee4 06-05-2011 08:57 AM

Sounds like a good idea to back off for now. Yes, tomorrow is a better day - and just in case no one else has mentioned it - put the larger piece on the bottom and let the feed dogs pull it into size as you sew.
