raptureready 08-09-2010 03:50 PM

One of the ladies in our Strips and Scraps club brought her project in a tote bag that she'd made and it had the silver fabric that a lot of ironing board covers are made of on one side. That side wasn't quilted but still had a layer or two of warm and natural in it. The other side of the bag was quilted strips. And both sides had a backing(the inside of the bag). It had a binding along both sides of the top then binding was used all the way around the three closed sides to connect them. The handles were made into the top binding. Once her project was taken out her tote became her pressing surface. It was about the size of a fat quarter and I thought it was pretty cool. Has anyone ever seen these? Or do you have one?

craftybear 08-09-2010 03:53 PM

wow, would love to see it and see if you can get the pattern and maybe do a tutorial for us on here

sounds so cool

(I just did a search and does it look like this one

http://www.ericas.com/sewing/patterns/totes.htm is this it???

http://www.ericas.com/sewing/patterns/21399b.jpg

and this is the description

Pressing Spot & Iron Tote
Make your personal pressing spot to carry along to classes, club meetings and retreats. The board reverses to the silver Teflon coated "Quilted Iron Quick" fabric. The same fabric lines the iron tote to insulate your hot iron for the trip home. There is even a pocket to keep the cord away from the hot iron. Pack up and go without waiting for your iron to cool!
21399 $9.00

I looked and although this one is really nice it's far more complicated than the one I saw. The one today was a flat bag. Just the two sides put together with binding around the edge. I try to make one and show it but it may be a few weeks or more before I get to it.

thank you Raptureready!

I used to do the mystery blocks on www.paperpanache.com and one of them was a cute little garden fairy. I used it to sew up a little quilted tote bag & then cut & made a similar size bag from an old ironing board cover. I take this anytime I want to tote my iron along, and if it's still warm I can just carry it along in it. I suppose I could use this as an ironing surface as well, but I usually have my small June Taylor cut'n press board with me.

My group made these with 1 FQ quilted to 2 layers of thinsulate ( you can use warm and natural, not polyester)any way you want Cross hatch, free motion, or just lines. then sandwich with that shiny stuff heat reflective that you see on readymade ironing board covers. We buy it here in local fabric shops. Then you bind it with double fold binding. Voila you have your own personal ironing surface. They are great for gifts.

Nope that's not it either but I'm glad I started this thread because it's given me a lot of new ideas.

That's a neat easy one.

I wonder how 'cool' the iron needs to be in order to put them in the totes without the iron burning the liner?
WARM but not HOT . . . maybe?

I'm glad you started this thread too!! What a cool idea! (sorry for the pun:), I'm really not that with it today to think of it on purpose!

Chigger Holler Quilter 08-10-2010 05:58 AM

I'll have to make one of these. Will do sew as soon as I find the ironing board type of fabric. It'd be nice to take to class and when you travel.

amandasgramma 08-10-2010 06:05 AM

I'm in a hurry to head out...so can't do research, but when you mention "flat bag", i'm thinking LapTop computer bag. I've seen patterns for those that may work for what you're talking about.

JuBee 08-10-2010 11:21 AM

THat's a super idea.
I will try to make one for myself soon.

Pzazz 08-10-2010 11:59 AM

What an excellent idea!!! Taking the iron there is never a problem...it's getting the hot iron home that makes for a challenge of where to put it in the van!!! I will definitely be making one as well.

Here are pics of one that I made recently - flat ironing surface, folds up to look like a bag and has pocket in front for portable iron? Is that what you're looking for? Have mislaid insructions for now!!

Try again with pics!! Sorry about that. I traced my pattern back to America Quilts Creatively, Husqvarna & Pfaff sponsored site with many patterns; go to Episode 2610 which is on window valances but scroll down a few pages and there are the instructions at the bottom of that episode.
I also have another one from Embroidery Garden-Ironing Board Caddy quite different.

Ironing side with Insulbrite & 2xcotton bating

note that one handle is twisted!!

Quilters are usually very generous with information. Ask the ladies in the group where they got the pattern.

I really liked this one and a friend has made one that works really well. Looks easy to do too!

BellaBoo 05-22-2012 08:19 AM

I've made the iron caddy. Also I made one with laminate for the lining and it's great to carry lunch, open it up and you have a placemat. Also good for a baby quick diaper carrier and changing pad. I used the pattern texasladybug posted. here is more pictures and info about it. http://www.sisterscommonthread.com/products.html

luvstoquilt301 05-22-2012 08:20 AM

that is cute and easy enough to make without buying the pattern.

MaryMo 05-22-2012 08:35 AM

There are several references on QB for this type of project. See: http://www.quiltingboard.com/general...n-t175046.html

I just typed "iron tote" in the search section and came up with several references.

SuzyQ 05-22-2012 11:55 AM

That's a great idea!

Never saw one before but I know who's going to have on soon!

applique 05-23-2012 05:53 AM

I bought a bolt of the silver fabric and it is supposed to be "safe" up to 400 degrees. I can send you a fat quarter if you PM the addy.

This thread is an excellent example of why we are reading the QB. Helping each other find whatever we're looking for.

I just bought this pattern. The iron can be hot as it does have the silver ironing board fabric and batting in it. Cool pattern.

DOTTYMO 04-21-2013 11:00 PM

I have a square pressing nd iron carry. I backed out the fabric and put the batting for hot things in the centre. Then did a quick quilt. I ended by sewing ties on the four corners. Put iron in centre then fasten the ties. The whole can then go into my tote. I do let the iron cold ow before putting in but I am not worried if it has some heat. Took it to classes last year it was very useful in a place full of quilters with li,tied irons.
