I seriously screwed up! :(
 

I was doing a pattern where I needed to sew together jelly roll strips and with my lack of sleep I forgot to take out the pieces for the borders and in between the blocks. I instead sewed ALL of the strips together. :( This is going to take me FOREVER!! I was so happy when I sewed the last set together and about 30 seconds later had an OMG what did I do moment. I was adjusting to take it from a twin to king as well so I need to rip the stitches out of about 40 sets of strips. I know it was from the lack of sleep but this is the biggest mistake I have made so far in my quilting "career" Oh man!!! :*(

So sorry for all your hard work. I know how you feel I do things like that a lot lately.

I'd be tempted to get some more jelly roll strips and make a second quilt with those 40 sets of strips. But I make a lot of charity quilts so it would go to good either way.

Sorry to hear you've had problems. It's such a hassle to have to rip out stitches.

If I lived closer I would come over and help....been there and done that many times for the same reason...sorry...

OUCH - that one hurts. I'm sorry you had this happen. I know I've done UH-OH things when I'm tired too. Hope the rip out goes fast and with no hassles.

This is when I would just rework the pattern rather than undoing the sewing! If I tried to tear it out, I would never finish it!

Ditto! There is no way I would rip that much. My time is worth too much. Or, you could use the ones you were going to rip and make a different pattern border instead. Like large piano keys or something like that. Get creative, not friendly with your ripper!

Do you have another fabric in your stash you can use to make the border? Or are you close enough to a quilt shop to pick up a border fabric? Any chance you have extra backing fabric you can use as a border? I wouldn't do all that ripping out. Is the quilt large enough not to need a border?

I agree find a creative way to fix the mistake. You never know if it happens for a reason. Rip the segments apart first then break it down or do a rail fence or piano key border with a breaking border of a solid fabric about 2 inches wide. Good luck!

When I do something like this (which is more often than I'd like to admit), in my head, I'm saying "Edit, Undo". But it doesn't work!!!!!

I'm with others --- find or buy some border fabric and say that you PLANNED it this way!!! LOL Sorry --- I've done some of the same things. One friend says to me that there is NOTHING I could do wrong that she hasn't already done!!!

I would look to see if I could find some fabric in the same collection and work from that ... I would really do just about anything to avoid ripping that amount of perfectly good stitiches.

Well...your problem is a lot worse than mine not being able to find my new package of rotary blades. I really DO feel bad for you. I completed (or so I thought) the bag for my son's girlfriend for Christmas. When I turned it right side out...I had sewn the handles on wrong and they were down inside between the lining and the bag. I will say that the person who wrote the pattern for her book did NOT give very good/explicit directions. The bag is still sitting here waiting for me to figure out how to rip out just the straps without a big hassle and me cursing the bag the whole time I am ripping.

I'm not that experienced at quilting but have sewn forever and ripping out anything is horrible. So...I would do like most have said...get other fabric for the blocks and border.

That is a really good idea. I didnt think about any of that. I just thought OH MAN that is a LOT to take out. I will go through my scraps and fabric see what I can come up with. My quilting store closed so my only option for fabric now is to order online or to go to Joanns and get something, but I might have something that works. I might just do more dark and less squares in between. I do have some that I have already taken apart but that would save me from doing the rest and I might just use the leftovers for placemats or possibly a lap quilt if I have enough for someone for Christmas. That much unsewing would get that project stuck in the closet for sure. I hope you can figure something out. Good luck!

I have a granddaughter who loves ripping out! If you were closer I'd send her over.

I'm with most others, I would not rip that much, I would come up with a different design and try harder next time to make it the right way.

I hate to rip stitches out. I would try to find a solution for the borders. Where there is a will there is a way. Yes, lack of sleep does it every time. Good luck with whatever you do.

Ouch. I'm so sorry :( I agree with Doreen - I'd try to figure out something else for the borders. I really hate ripping! I'm notorious for setting aside stuff like that and moving on lol. I just hate hate hate ripping.

In my household we call it a senior moment. Sorry for the extra work but maybe a cuppa and a little chocolate will help and maybe a good movie while you unstitch. LOL

I have a design element change in just about all my quilts. It's not a mistake, I meant for it to be that way.

I say do NOT rip, REDESIGN!!!!!!

I really dislike ripping...and would do anything I could do to not have to rip that much...lots of suggestions have been given...hope you can find a way to not have to rip so much...or at all.

Just be glad it is fixable! I don't blame you, I would "redesign" too!

I agree with others - I'd try to re-think my design to avoid ripping out stitches. That's not a chore I enjoy at all!

Great suggestions ladies. I think they've helped me with a "design problem" I have.

I was working on that quick end-to-end jelly roll strip quilt and got carried away with the cutting and sewing back together part. Now it's smaller than I wanted so I think I'll try so make it a design opportunity and rework it.

Where is it written that you have to use those strips for your border. I don't! I sew all the strips together, remembering to cut 18" off the first strip and then when it is all put together, I decide what I want for my border, which is solid. You didn't do anything wrong at all. It isn't a mistake at all! You are doing just fine. Besides, I would rather have a wider longer quilt with my own decision for what my border is going to be anyhow. Don't worry about it. I have one ready to tie down and I love it with my own border. Hey, it is not worth getting your knickers in a knot about. We don't make mistakes!!! Edie

I think all quilters have been in your shoes. Like others, I feel my time is worth more so I would suck it up, get more jelly rolls and figure out something different to do with what you have already sewn together. One thing for sure is you won't do it again. Seems like when something infringes on my pocketbook or time I remember pretty good!

I think I agree with getting another roll and just make it a little bigger. I hate ripping things apart.

I don't think I would rip out that much either. Is there any way you would change the design? Come up with a new and maybe better design without ripping all that out?

How terrible! Glad I've never done that. (And if you buy that, I've got some ocean front property in AZ.)

Put on some happy music and maybe it will make all the ripping a little less stressful.

Why not leave it as is? You may not need a border on it. Just put the blocks together with just turning
every other one the opposite way then put batting and backing and the quilt will still be beautiful and
more original.

I feel your pain. I've had to skin my last two quilts after I had them FMQ. If it is any consolation, think how good you'll feel when you get it done. Hang in there!
