I was working on my latest charity quilt today and I sewed my finger. I was very very fortunate. I was doing machine applique using the satin stitch. I had the foot pedal unplugged so it was going pretty fast and it went in and out right beside by finger nail. It didn't stop the machine and it didn't skip a stitch. It just kept right on sewing. No blood on the quilt either. That's what is really important!!

So, want to share your sewing over your finger story?

shaverg 03-03-2010 07:09 PM

Oooooooooooouch Glad you are ok.

drivingsusan 03-03-2010 07:12 PM

OOOwwww! Knock on wood- have not done that ---yet, but have come very close! VERY close!

Chasing Hawk 03-03-2010 07:18 PM

Now you are a true Seamstress, according to Upholstery folklore...lol

I have "clipped" my pointing finger many a time, and while upholstering I have stapled myself to my work before. And it usually happened when my pliers were on the cutting table a few inches out of my reach. They say if you staple yourself to a piece of furniture that's when you know your an upholsterer.

nursie76 03-03-2010 07:20 PM

OMG!!!!!!! What a trooper...you kept going and you didn't bleed! Yowser!

30+ years ago, when my baby was learning to walk, I was sewing and out of the corner of my eye, I saw him stumbling towards me. I put out my hand to stop him and sewed my finger!! needle went right into the side, i disconnected the needle from the machine, grabbed baby and ran to neighbor's house, still not looking at my own finger. she called to her husband and he chuckled, took a pair of pliers and pulled it out,put a bandaid on it for me...i went back home and sewed...keeping baby in playpen, much to his chagrin...

renee765 03-03-2010 07:40 PM

I haven't done that with a sewing machine, but I did manage to sew my finger (under the fabric) to my quilt while hand quilting.

magnolia 03-03-2010 07:40 PM

Glad your finger is okay. When I went to test the different machines before I bought mine I almost sewed my finger right there in the store. I had never used a machine before and I almost gave the poor lady a heart attack. She was nervous about selling me one.

oksewglad 03-03-2010 08:01 PM

Oh I have done that too, but...
It was late at night, burning the midnight oil when the kiddies were 12 and under. Sewed my forefinger right through the nail, left hand--ouch--broke the needle, and I knew there was a pieceof needle in my finger. DH took me to ER, and the older MD on call didn't beleive me when I told him there was metal in my finger, but I could feel it. Long story short, he deadened the finger and started cutting and voila, there was about a 1/4" piece of needle. Think the old guy was wondering why any sane person was sewing at that time of night, but young mom's everywhere know why. Anyway 25+ years later end of finger still has a dead spot! Be careful out there!

redrummy 03-03-2010 08:13 PM

I was rushing to finish a quilt,as we all know we shouldn't rush.... and talking to someone here, and didn't realise my finger was that close. Oweeeeeeee I caught the side right by the nail. Luckily it didn't catch the nail. It kept right on sewing, but I had to cut the thread from my finger.

kwhite 03-03-2010 08:15 PM

I am not even going to read this thread. It is like if I think about it it will happen. EWWWW!!!

Candace 03-03-2010 08:16 PM

I've sewn my finger a few times. Never through the nail though. OUchie..

Elizabeth-Liz 03-03-2010 08:16 PM

have not gotten my finger, but have gotten the fingernail, bent the needle.

b.zang 03-03-2010 08:19 PM

Ugh. I can picture all of these scenarios all too well.

When I was a child and my younger brother was 4-yrs old, he left the dinner table, wandered into the living room and put the threaded needle of the treadle machine through his forefinger. Of course, we all rushed to see the cause of the yelling. My mother is still grossed out, thinking about having to turn the wheel to release his finger, then cut the threads.

Hopefully I learned by watching because I haven't duplicated his move.

littlehud 03-03-2010 08:24 PM

I am cringing. OUCH!!!! I haven't done that (yet). I'm glad you didn't get hurt too bad. OUCH again.

weezie 03-03-2010 08:36 PM

I sewed my finger only once (that I recall) and not very long ago either. I didn't like that very much!

Honey 03-03-2010 08:57 PM

I have never sewed my finger, but every time I change the needle I manage to jab myself really good. Many years ago one of my SIL's was trying to learn to sew. She wasn't paying attention and pressed the foot peddle real hard. Not only did she put the needle through her fingernail, but added a couple more stitched for good measure before she had the sense to lift up her foot. The last stitch went almost half way through the bone. Her dad just took a plyers and pulled it out. The site of blood doesn't bother me ( I grew up with 7 older brothers and a sister, also have 4 of my own) but I do think that having that needle go through the bone would have made me ralph.

skpkatydid 03-03-2010 09:17 PM

That is the reason I use a stylus or even my seam ripper tip when I am sewing.

Fritzy 03-03-2010 09:29 PM

Well I figure I might as well put my two cents in too. I haven't actually sewn "through" my finger but a few years ago I was sewing late at night, everyone was in bed, & I just caught a little piece of skin on the side of my finger. It was just in a spot where i couldn't get the needle raised up high enough to get the needle out & it was in just enough where my skin was a little too thick to just pull it sideways to release it. My sewing room is in the basement & I figured no one would hear me even if I did yell so I just kept working at it & somehow managed to get it out. I sure felt dumb at the time but figured it could've been lots worse so I guess I can join the "Sewing your finger club (kind of)." We do learn from our mistakes!

sewnsewer2 03-03-2010 10:04 PM

OUCH! I'm glad you are ok. You must have one heck of a machine not to mess up after that.

Pats8e8 03-03-2010 10:06 PM

I was using my serger and going fast and it was vibrating some. I wasn't paying attention when all of a sudden it went off the edge of the table. I grabbed for it and it got me with both needles. Isn't it amazing how at first you don't even feel it, then your finger comes back to life and you definitely feel it. Not much blood with mine either though.

I have sewn for about 40 years and quilted 1 1/2 now. I finally sewed through my finger on Dec 30,2009. It went right through next to my fingernail. I stopped sewing immediately and I just sat there looking at it for a minute.
The needle was sticking out of the bottom of my finger about 1/4". It didn't break the needle, just bent it quite a bit. I finally just turned the crank backwards and held my finger down because it wanted to go up with the needle. It came out and all I could think was, crap, now I can't sew until my finger stops bleeding. It only bled a minute, I've had my tetanus shot, so I went back to sewing. I did keep the needle as a reminder to "Stop sewing before adjusting seams about ready to be sewn"!!! LOL I was going to post a picture of my needle but there's no attachment thing. You'd be surprised how bent it is. I want in the "Club" too! LOL

Found it! Here's my needle!

Really glad you're okay! And, that you avoided the "ultimate" tragedy of getting blood on the quilt!! :-)

I haven't sewn any fingers yet but have a similar story, one that tells more about the age we live in than how dumb we can be. Here goes... one of my other hobbies is wood working. Nothing big... bookcases, that sort of thing. My golden rule has always been not to work with power tools when I'm tired. I should have listened to myself this particular night.

I was using my table saw to reduce the width of a board. Don't cringe -- didn't lose any appendages. When I reached to the other side to grab the board as it came thru, I got too close to the blade with my left thumb. As someone said, at first you don't really feel anything. At most, I felt a burning sensation.

So, I stood there for a second, looking at my thumb, when it dawned on me that I'd cut it. Duh! Of course, after a few seconds, there was a lot of blood. I grabbed a shop cloth, wrapped my thumb, hopped in the car, and drove myself to the ER, all the while cursing that I'd broken my own rule about working when tired. This was about 11pm.

I'm not quite sure what the intake nurse wrote on my form but a few minutes later, while I'm waiting, a couple of people popped their heads into her office asking about "the woman who cut her thumb off with a table saw?!!" Guess I was the excitement on an otherwise dull night.

Long story short, ahd here's the telling part about the age we live in, while I'm being stitched up, there's a man in the next cubicle who's also being stitched up. He'd cut his hand on a broken glass while doing the dishes!

Glad to say my thumb is okay, just a small scar that I use as a reminder of my golden rule. I also learned something else.... never buy a cheap power tool where the safety gizmos (like the blade guard) eventually fall off!!!!! Oh yah, use a push board!!

wvdek 03-04-2010 04:32 AM

Ouch!
It's too early in the morning to make me cringe.

Glad your ok.

beckyw 03-04-2010 04:33 AM

I have sewn my finger to. Have had friends cut or ;ost a finger to power tools.

vjengels 03-04-2010 05:27 AM

Wow! I was lucky enough to be born with stong fast growing finger nails, I've sewn through my index nails several times, it's a pain in the ,,,, chips, or punctures the nail, sometimes breaks my needle, either way I have to stop what I'm doing, fix whatever it is....I should buy a stylus.

notsewgood 03-04-2010 05:29 AM

you said it marsye!!! lol

quilter64779 03-04-2010 07:03 AM

Yes I have sewed my finger probably 50 years ago when I worked at Gay Gibson Garmet factory. Was sewing and all of a sudden the needle went through my pointer finger and broke the needle. Had needle and thread still sticking out and they took me to doctor to remove it. Hurt like the devil but the tetanus shot was just as bad as sewing my finger. Haven't done it since, sure pray I don't

Miss Mona 03-04-2010 07:14 AM

I was doing a sewing demo and I looked up when someone asked a question and the next thing I know my middle finger was under the needle. I use the needle up, needle down position, so it went all the way thru.Everyone stopped and watched. I had to raise the needle and work my finger out, while bleeding; had masking tape close by so taped the finger to stop the bleeding and went on with the demo.

After that everyone wanted a demo with the lady that sewed her finger. I wonder if they thought I would do it again?

Here is a picture of the offending block. I don't think a stylus would have helped since I was pulling the fabric around one of the curves. Hopefully I learned my lesson about being careful because it really didn't hurt and I'm pretty sure if I would have done what some of you have done the outcome wouldn't have been so nice.

nena 03-04-2010 07:54 AM

Renee, I did the same thing hand quilting. Tried to move my finger and I was stuck. It just went through the top layer of skin. I cracked up wondering if anyone else had ever done that. LOL

I did this as well! My nails grow long so it caught my pinky nail, sucked my finger under and broke the needle. Went to the ER, got a tetanus shot :-( and they had to cut my pinky, remove the metal and give me one stitch lol!

I sewed my finger,on my atavar quilt. Fortunately I had a friend who was a PA who came over and pulled it out. It went through my finger nail, bone and out the other side. No infection, or long term side effects. It did take me a few days before I would look at that sewing machine again! I'm more careful now.

rosalia856 03-04-2010 08:23 AM

I did that not once but twice. The second time it went in on the side of the finger and stuck. I had to call my husband to turn the needle up. The next thing he had to check to see where the broken of piece of the needle went. The thread was still attached. It did break the shaft on the sewing machine. They said you haven't sewed until you sew your finger. I highly suggest you don't let that happen. LOL

nativetexan 03-04-2010 08:29 AM

well my Mother sewed her finger. it got infected and she lost the tip of it. still had a nail but it curved downward. long time ago too though.

Debra Mc 03-04-2010 08:49 AM

Did that too, only I jerked & it ripped my finger open. Bled like a stuck pig. It was at the tip of my 2nd finger. Got a nice scar. If I just hadn't jerked. Still gives me the shudders.
