I think they could be more precise by paper piecing (it really is easy :) ). But here are some other options for making them:

I find it easiest to use freezer paper for templates! When I made Dunk love 2 tone I actually used the templates out of the book, I went to the copy shop and had them blown up to the size needed, then transfered them block by block to freezer paper. I was able to cut each piece with my rotary to make it easier and because the freezer paper had been ironed to the fabric it didn't move around!

If you need to tape the "pattern" to a window and then tape the freezer paper over it, then if your arm gets tired you don't have to try lining things back up again! lay the freezer paper (before cutting it out) shiney side down on your fabric and iron (not a very high heat and only for a second). Then cut paper and fabric all at one time!
