I haven't really ever been someone who sews, and only in the past two years have I taken up quilting... But today it happened. As I was looking at a tote bag I own, I was thinking 'I could totally make one of those'. OMW!! (oh my word) I never thought that would be me!! :-)

Then just do it!!!!

Flying_V_Goddess 06-01-2011 08:35 PM

I do that all the time. In fact, most of the time when I'm out shopping I have a mini notebook with me to sketch all the things I like and could probably make myself.

I remember going out with a friend to see Toy Story 3 and we had some time to kill. So we to this store with real expensive clothes to window shop. I found this top that was in the clearence rack. It was basically a flimsy grey t-shirt with the hems cut off, cut down the middle, and the middle was replaced with a black zipper. They wanted like $20 for it...this was off the clearence rack! I told my friend "$20 for THIS? I could easily make this for under $10 AND in colors I actually like!"

MellieKQuilter 06-01-2011 08:42 PM

I think I will be trying out making the tote... But my list of things I want to make just keeps growing and growing!! I guess I could spend time on worse things. :-)

For some reason, this feeling totally made me feel like 'I have arrived'. Lol. :-)

wanda lou 06-01-2011 08:44 PM

ha ha me too.

Jammin' Jane 06-01-2011 08:47 PM

MellieK...you can do it!!
Show us when you've finished it and we'll "rah-rah" you!!

cjomomma 06-01-2011 08:49 PM

Have you reached the point where you see quilt patterns in almost everything you see while running around town? Or you want to use the clothing that ppl are wearing because the design would be perfect for a quilt?

Unique Creations 06-01-2011 08:50 PM

Welcome to the "Other Side" or maybe I should say "Our Side"!!

Or you take a picture of the floor in a public restroom because it would make a great quilt design! lol

Go for it! We will be waiting to see your finished tote.

meanmom 06-02-2011 03:31 AM

I see things all the time that I know I could make. Then I remember a sign I saw at a craft show years ago. "Yeah you can make it, and cheaper. But when!" SO I think about if I really need it and if I will ever get it done before I buy. My bucket list is endless. 3 people could never get it done.

cherrio 06-02-2011 04:46 AM

36 would really great. except I would still spend too much time HERE! LOL

Now the question is "do you want to?"

pnptrapp 06-02-2011 04:51 AM

My husband gets a little frustrated when we go to a show/ shopping for craft related stuff and we don't buy anything becuase I can't bring myself to pay their prices knowing I can do it myself for cheaper!

TootieAnn 06-02-2011 04:54 AM

Come on and join us! My grandmother worked for a US Marine base during WWII. She actually sewed parachutes for the troops! She didn't have much money as she was a widow with a young son. She would go to the best dress shops in town, examine the dresses, then go home and make what she wanted. Then she would go out and dance the night away with the officers! Fifty years later, she married one of those officers!

izzybelle 06-02-2011 05:01 AM

welcome to the club! I made my first tote ever-turned out great even though I was worried I couldn't follow all those instructions (zippers, cord locks, fancy pockets etc)

wyogrannie 06-02-2011 05:01 AM

My mother used to do that!! We'd go to San Francisco, look in Imagnin's windows for the latest fashion and then hit the fabric stores to make a copy!

Weenween 06-02-2011 05:12 AM

I made alot a few years ago,my daughter would find a purse and I would make her one for a lot less than their price.I even took an old Ver Bradly clutch purse apart for my niece and made I don't know how many like that.I really don't know if that is leagal or not but I did do it.

Joanne9of12 06-02-2011 05:20 AM

Congratulations! You have reached the point of no return, as my husband tells me. :-)

LOL! So there! along with not making the things I know I could!

blueangel 06-02-2011 07:30 AM

I'm sure you can do it.

mpeters1200 06-02-2011 07:40 AM

I never took a home ec class and all my quilting is self taught. I took one basic class when I first started and it was more on basic machine work than actual quilt work.

I've seen so many online patterns or have gone to craft shows and said "I wish I could make something like that". Craftybear posted another awesome link and I took one look at the tank top and swore I could make that! I'm buying the fabric this weekend and hoping to give making clothes for the first time a shot! I totally understand what you mean!

I haven't made any bags yet....don't really have the confidence yet.

I love what dorian's momma wrote...I do take pics of bathroom floors and think they could make great quiting motifs!!

mzmama 06-02-2011 07:49 AM

Welcome

quiltmouse 06-02-2011 07:58 AM

I can't read any more.

Casual Reading (30's mystery/romance) has always been my refuge.

Takes me forever to finish a chapter, now.

My mind wanders, I grab a pc of paper & start doodling a quilt design layout, or fabric/pattern combinations. or... or... or...

obsession is more than a fragrance.  8-)

Murphy 06-02-2011 08:12 AM

ROFL. I know what you mean. I am not a sewer per se, but just last week or so have made some little totes and am having a ball. Go for it! You won't look back; however, let me know what you are doing with all those totes. I keep making them, but don't know what to do with them now (laughter). Don't sell items, but there are only so many friends.............

you took the words right out of my mouth, I do it constantly everyday...too funny...we all have it bad...

EagarBeez 06-02-2011 09:10 AM

I was once never much of a person who liked to sew, but, I have made, curtains for the whole house, a bag that holds diapers (hangs from the crib, closet). Curtains for a nursery, curtains for all 3 of my grandbabies, All without a pattern. Me??? Imagine that. I just look at something and if I like it, I try doing it myself. Well I saw a quilt I liked and
came home, looked at all info I need and made my first quilt. I am hooked with a capital H

Gah yes. I also saw a lady come through Walmart yesterday evening and she had this purse with plastic ruffles on the side. Ok, it was really ugly. Cotton would have looked so much better. lol

Connie in CO 06-02-2011 09:35 AM

I have a friend who embroidery's, beautiful work also.Connie in CO

Doreen 06-02-2011 10:48 AM

I am the same way. I see things that I could make and probably will be made better. Some of the stuff they sell is junk and you don't realize it til you get it home.

I find myself checking out patterns on tiled floors and wall paper in magazines, I see quilt patterns everywhere.
