Basting 3 quilt layers together this a.m...having difficulty with my needle, and suddenly a bubble popped in my brain (figuratively). Tho't "why not?" Has anyone else used the curved needles for 'sandwiching'? And why didn't you tell me about this method? I'm having a pout about being left in the dark!

mermaid 06-22-2011 07:01 AM

2 different sizes of needle--aren't they used for upholstery? Well, a quilt upholsters a bed..in a manner of speaking!

babyfireo4 06-22-2011 07:04 AM

great idea! never thought of that before.

larkley 06-22-2011 07:04 AM

I say whatever works...

toomanycats 06-22-2011 07:07 AM

curved quilting needles.... I use them for basting in the floss when I tye a quilt. I like the large eye on them so I can see to thread.

Me, too. It goes really, really quickly using the curved needle.

Mamawcj 06-22-2011 07:12 AM

I actually thought about this a few days ago while sitting in my quilting room wishing I could sew. I had rotator cuff repair on my left shoulder earlier this month and it is totally immobilized (except for passive exercises) for another couple of weeks. I have a top finished and I think I will try basting it with a curved needle.

Jingle 06-22-2011 07:14 AM

Use whatever works, I have not tried this.

dmyers 06-22-2011 07:14 AM

I use them all the time to hide thread ends on my long arm.

quiltsRfun 06-22-2011 07:16 AM

I used curved needles when I thread basted but have since switched to pin or spray basting.

Diannia 06-22-2011 07:19 AM

I have used them for tying a quilt and they work great.

Oh the cat in your Avitar looks just like my Princess! Is yours a Rag Doll cat?

Diannia

DogHouseMom 06-22-2011 07:22 AM

I'm with you ... I never thought of it before either but it sure does make sense!

And THANKS for the timely message ... I'll be sandwiching sometime this week!! That is after I find a curved needle.

hcarpanini 06-22-2011 07:23 AM

excellent idea!

DebraK 06-22-2011 07:24 AM

gurl, quit your pouting and git to sewing ;-) I'm sure you've helped others today. Good tip. Nice cat ;-)

lynnie 06-22-2011 07:25 AM

mermaid 06-22-2011 07:55 AM

My cat WAS Himalayan/Siamese, but is no longer with us as of Feb...he had brain cancer. Glad I might have passed a usable idea...back to my pouting....errrr basting.

MrsM 06-22-2011 07:59 AM

I use them for tying my quilts.

sewobsessed1 06-22-2011 08:01 AM

Yeah, have been using them for basting since waaaaay back. I really thought everyone knew about them. Sorry? :( Well, now they do! lol

Raggiemom 06-22-2011 08:07 AM

I've never even heard of them--great idea.

Sallyflymi 06-22-2011 08:37 AM

Ditto!

caspharm 06-22-2011 10:15 AM

Great idea. Are these needles too large to use for binding?

toomanycats 06-22-2011 11:07 AM

they come in a couple of sizes within the package. I think they would be a little large for binding but I haven't tried it. I do one side with the machine then flip over to back and hand stich down with tiny stiches....depending on how my hands feel that day. some days can't hold the needle.

Barb44 06-22-2011 11:25 AM

I have always used curved needles. I thought everyone did that. Just goes to show - never assume.

Doreen 06-22-2011 11:31 AM

I use them for basting. Sometimes I walso use the spray to baste but lately it's been gunking up my needle. I changed brands.

pocoellie 06-22-2011 06:28 PM

I use them all the time.

PamB8s 06-22-2011 06:33 PM

OMG ROFL, when I first saw that I thought they were wires for an underwire bra.

Sheree from Chicago 06-23-2011 02:36 AM

Good Thinking!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You could submit this for a Fons & Porter Tip!!!!!!!!!! It's a good one!

Just-Lee 06-23-2011 02:46 AM

Wouldn't it take a lot of them and are they cheap enough to use for basting? I would be a bleeding mess, as I am the only one I know who can watch as she pokes her fingers!

misscarol 06-23-2011 03:39 AM

I never thought of that. Glad you did!!!

the old one 06-23-2011 04:15 AM

Several quilters here in our little town in Iowa have been using these needles for a long time, they also are great if one is tying a quilt. piecefully, the old one
